Type-Moon: Fate/stay night, Tsukihime, and Kara no Kyoukai discussion

While we're on the subject of Let's Plays, this guy been going through CCC while subbing most of the dialogue.

If you wanted to check out thst game' story but don't know moonrunes, that's about the best way if and until the fantranslation is done.

Nice, the LP is just slightly ahead of me, so I'll probably have people to discuss the game with when I'm done. Especially considering I'll most likely take longer to finish since I'm doing all four Servants (and am barely started on 5th save with the CCC Ending because I took too long to learn that the route starts on the biggest Guide Dang It!).

I'll give you that Sakura could have more content provided in other routes,not like I'd argue having more of my favorite character. But I understand seeing HF exactly why she doesn't get involved and see things from a wider perspective when I went back over the prior routes. Sakura wasn't apprehensive to Rin or Saber just due to teenage jealousy, it's because she saw the chaos formulating around her and knew it'd destroy pretty much the only place of peace she had. Plus not getting involved was shown in HF where she refused Zouken's trolling to take slaves or try to subjugate Shirou. That flashback meant its canon to all routes.

I mean, the confrontation the two sisters have in the Fate route makes a hell of a lot of sense in hindsight when you sit down and consider Sakura's frustration, when she pretty much told Rin to piss off when Rin tried to shoo her away from Shirou's house, but there was a really good scene in the Fate route you can get after that where you try to smooth things over with Sakura and it shows how greatly he values her input.

Her character is more subdued than Rin and Saber, but I appreciated it because of the nuance she gives for so many subjects, someone who promotes a more peaceful viewpoint over the competitive nature Rin and Saber have(since this entire war is literally BS and needlessly endangers a lot of people even if it's for a legitimate wish), and someone who doesn't have a romantic viewpoint of being a magus that Rin does. She has a lot to provide imo just looking at the narrative.

Okay, for the record, I should have used another term like focus character rather than heroine because the latter often means love interest.

Now, I’ll grant you that Sakura does have a personality that can be expressed in a more nuanced way; however, this also doesn’t really get to shine when she could have interacted with other characters to make her personality clear.

For instance, a conversation between Saber and Sakura in the Fate route could have been used to show the obvious and hidden friction that the latter had with Artoria, maybe with Sakura reaffirming that the peace she has now is more worthy than chasing a reachless dream, of course, this serves in both ways to Sakura, who only finds tranquility in Shirou’s home; and to Saber, who is struggling to deal with her wish to save Camelot by any means.

Sakura could also have been a bit more accusative of Rin if she found out how wounded Shirou could get during “Fate” or “Unlimited Blade Works” and confront her in her seeming indifference to all the wounds he accumulates, putting her in a mental pinch between steering Shirou from harm or accept his decision to fight, or take the third option and try to reign him in when he exceeds himself.

I wouldn't say that Sakura lacks personality, or that it's not conveyed well.

She's creepy and a downer, those are personality traits, right?

There are many reasons why being Sakura is a sin. Those are among them.

No, she has the guts, she rips on Shirou even as she tells him she loves him and why, and that is in more than just HF. It's just that she doesn't go for ice burns all the time like Rin does, so it seems relatively low key.

And like I said before, she doesn't have the luxury to just get involved without making a lot of things go off the rails. However Nasu did say that if Medusa had been honest with her about Shinji's actions, she would have just taken Rider back and made him into "even more of a Wakame", Nasu's own words when someone asked about Sakura being put into a coma in UBW (Medusa thought since Sakura is a magus, she would be fine being in a temporary coma, so using the Bloodfort on her is permissibleas she wouldn't die). It wasn't a coincidence why Medusa asks Shinji when Sakura makes the second book in HF if he will use her just to protect himself or why on day 9 she tells him be broke his promise. Nasu wouldn't then mention in that Q&A that she would take Medusa back if this happened if she wasn't capable of it. You just hve to consider everything else she has to deal with afterward, the sharp increase of usage of magical energy, Zouken seeing this and working behind the scenes, she has a lot to think about before she pulls the trigger, since she might end up shooting herself when she pulls it.

See, even if the three routes are spaced into different timelines, some things mesh by being apart of the same origin. Plus, there actually was parts she does interact with Saber, and iirc, you have the choices of talking with Saber or Sakura about how they felt about the other when they talked privately in UBW(for people who only watched the anime, remember they mentioned a sleepover they have with Taiga/Sakura/Saber sharing a room). In the VN, Saber tells you Sakura is a decent person, but very guarded at all times to paraphrase. Sakura says that she had apprehensions before, but is now comfortable with Saber, which means a lot considering she knows what Saber is. But again, the issues of her getting involved in the war bring more problems to her from her POV than solutions, since she knows Zouken is manipulative and her powers are heavily impacted. She only goes as far as she does in HF because she has no choice and its blown out in the open. You can call it cowardice if you want, but she has a gun to her head at all times Rin/Saber/Ilya/Shirou don't, and very few good options.

Me too. I'm kinda resigned to all Sakura content in this thread be just "Sakura bad" and end there, so it's always great to see someone have the actual patience to properly discuss Sakura's character here.

It's nice to get an alternative perspective for once instead of the echo chamber it's been about her.

From one side I appreciate subdued characted - being extremely introverted myself I understand to pick on finer details a character exhibits. Popularity of many characters seem to come solely from how much noise they make, but it's the true art and also a challenge to fashion a rounded character in silence.

But from other side "Sakura bad"

Its a conundrum.

On one side, deep introspection of a characters character.

But on the other, MEMES!

I was wondering - with all those worms inside Sakura, shouldn't Shirou be afraid to stick his dick inside her? Who knows - they may bite it off. Then I realized that he's sticking it inside Sakura. He's way past being afraid of some stinkin' worms.
