Serious Sam is back!

Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass will launch in August 2020 for Steam and Google Stadia.

The game will have a "legion system" where it means you can have a whopping of 100,000 enemies on screen at once

Been playing Hades and I think it's official: Darren Korb only knows how to do one kind of music.

He does it really freaking well, mind you, but the man's soundtracks have very little variation.

[up] tbh hard agree

like Pyre's OST is absolutely god-tier but man it blends into one long track after a while with too many repeat listenings

For those unaware, Pyre was added to the itch.io Racial Justice Buddle of 1600 games, so no better opportunity to grab it than now.

Other high-profile games on the bundle are Celeste, Night in the Woods and Oxenfree, and while Sturgeon's Law reigns supreme that's still 4 great games for cheaper than the pizza afterwards and you're helping a good cause! It's 2 birds with one stone!

I checked out Long Gone Days after buying the itch.io racial justice bundle on a whim and holy shit this is extremely my Jam™

Like I haven't even recruited the full party, and I already love Rourke and Adair. The communication theme is super apparent but not obnoxious and even encourages extending borders with all the untranslated Cyrillic.

I'm very excited to see when it leaves Early Access because after about 90 minutes of gameplay, I'm very intrigued to see how much more they do with the RPG medium.

Man, sorting out the good from the bad of this bundle is gonna take foreveeeeeeer

I think there's only 4 truly high-profile games, which is not the same as them being the only good ones.

Speaking of which, the bundles ends in 10 hours.

They already got 7 million, but every extra penny helps.

Finished Long Gone Days, I think I stand by my initial assumption that it's rough, but it's got its heart in the right place.

It's nice and short, it took me roughly six hours from start to finish to completely 100% every side quest and hunt down all the items, except for the ones in the forest because whoops I was in the middle of a chase sequence, I dunno why the devs thought I'd be checking my menu for new sidequests (one of the several things that I think need ironing out).

The biggest flaw is its biggest gameplay attempt at novelty, which isn't necessarily a total mark of condemnation as I think making the morale meter the center of gameplay is fine and an interesting way to, it's just that accumulating it through sidequests and battle victories is peanuts compared to how much it costs in battle to use the skill, which I think was the point?

But that runs into the problem of being told there's a special crit buff for reaching 100 so idk I feel like the system was meant to raise it faster beyond sidequests and Ivan's RNG Boost Morale replenishment. There's also the tutorial telling you that running Morale to 0 automatically grants a massive attack down penalty so the player's meant to be on their toes and maintain it for as long as possible? It was a worthwhile attempt for ludonarrative mechanics I guess.

The battle system itself is weird besides that with Pokemon DPPT levels of aggravatingly slow in denoting every single thing that's happening, like noting how there's a status effect inflicted after an enemy died, targeting an enemy is wonky, which really comes into focus with the current final boss, and Ivan is an Actual Pacifist and they commit to that even in battle, but also he has an attack stat that he can buff for himself???

Music was pretty good, I was surprised that it was all freeware music. Art is very nice and I think what initially drew me to the game, the writing can be melodramatic (especially with the premise of a secret underground military nation) but it worked for me and I like the party overall.

The Kaliningrad arc was a bit rushed and undercooked, but the writing picked up when they got to Kiel and the subtext of Atiye being Turkish-German (which explains her anger at the local alt-right party) and Lynn's backstory was well handled. Can't wait for more expansion on Cygnus and how they'll handle the story when they get to Poland.

Rogue Legacy 2 is now in Early Access!

Loved the visual overhaul: presentation was always the biggest problem with Rogue Legacy, so the new fancy graphics and (hoefully) better music will go a long way to making this sequel superior to the original.

And it's just nice to see one of the pioneers of the rogue-lite craze making a comeback, hopefully the old guard can still keep up with the new hotness.

The debate died down a bit, but I found this video about the topic of difficulty modes in games:

It's very reasonable and well presented without any mentions of the word "art" or comparisons with other media. Bonus for the British accent.

So even if you disagree with some or all of the arguments made, or is just sick of the argument (I know I am), I still think it is worth a watch.

Can somebody explain what "Chromatic Abberation" means? I've seen it listed in the options menu of a few games, but nothing ever seems to change whether it's on or off.

It's a term that originated in photography where the refraction of light distorts and blurs colors, meaning they change at certain edges of an image. I think the idea in games is that it makes the scene more "photorealistic" (even though it technically doesn't, what it does is make it look like it's being seen through a camera lens), and it's much easier to add now without significantly impacting performance so devs are using it more liberally. It can work for certain games depending on your taste but some people don't like it or think it doesn't fit every game and should be used more sparingly.

This video helps explain it in more detail:
