May I just say that there are two versions of Darker and Edgier in the Sonic franchise. There is the good type of Darker and Edgier like with Sonic Sat AM and the bad type of Darker and Edgier with Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic 2006. Remember friends, tropes are neither bad nor good. They merely are tools in the writer's arsenal.
