Episode 2: Tonbo’s unorthodox golfing style is so fun to watch. Wedging a ball by hitting it from a perpendicular angle makes theoretical sense but it would super hard to pull off in real life.
As I’d expected, this first arc will deal with Tonbo not wanting to leave the island, while Igaiga will probably want to bring her and her talent out into the world.
fanfic idea:
Tonbo versus Eve Burton, with the challenge Eve can only use her 3-iron
Let's be real, Eve outguns Tonbo
True that.
Watching Tonbo doing the sand trap in golf, reminds me of those times when my golf ball goes there.
PS - We need a page.
Episode 3: We get some more insight into Igaiga's background. We already kinda knew that his golfing career hasn't been going great, but turns out he also took out his frustration on his son. They... probably aren't on the best of terms right now.
On the bright side, Igaiga does manage to trick Tonbo into trying out the wedge! Slowly but surely Igaiga is making sure that the little lady hones her talent.
An interview with Rika Hayashi and Hiroki Tochi as Tonbo and Igarashi. They both mention golf being a known sport worldwide and the sense of community.
It also mentions that Tonbo is Hayashi's first role where she's in the leading role.
Episode 4: Igaiga finally realizes what's throwing him off about Tonbo's playstyle— golf is play, not sport, for her. And because she's playing, she's always trying out new stuff and taking risks, which helps her grow as a golfer. The unfortunate side effect is that Tonbo has zero competitive spirit, and it's in this episode that Igaiga's desire to hone Tonbo as a pro golfer solidifies, as I'd previously hypothesized.
Two additional notes about Tonbo's golfing: she thinks of the golf club like a sashimi knife, and apparently her right arm is longer than her left, which lets her increase the impact zone of her swing.
Found the Tonbo OP:
5th episode out.
Episode 5 is Igaiga’s island survival special. I would never wish anyone’s butt being feasted on by blackflies.
Producer got involved in the Tonbo anime 'cause he's a major golf weeb.
Igarashi telling Tonbo about the dangers of that gap in the golf course just made her jump. XD
Of course he does it too. XD
PS - Someone's translating Tonbo (manga).

Watching another golf anime right now. I heard that there's another one being done with Netflix.
