Falling Frontier looks like an indie RTS with some real potential. Definitely different from the crowd too in that it's not trying to copy Homeworld's formula - instead, it's more slower-paced, with your vessels and seasoned crew being valuable resources best not wasted on mindless spam-rush strategies. You also need to mind your angling and any obstacles in the line of fire - just like in space, projectiles will continue onward endlessly, meaning you might accidentally hit an ally, planetary colony, or valuable target being your enemies if you aren't careful enough!

This video goes into more detail about the game mechanics. No word on whether multiplayer will be available, but from what I'm seeing the focus is upon singleplayer only.

I'm definitely grabbing this one when it comes out - currently, that sounds seems to be around Spring this year in Steam Early Access.

Yeah, I've been seeing more of this around lately, and it looks really cool. I'm glad that we've gotten a slower-paced RTS now.

I'm not sure it's 3D, from the preview gameplay, I can't see any ships going on the Z-axis except for the destroyed ships "sinking" unless I missed something and the planets/moons seem to be on the same plane

Out of curiosity, anyone know if they are going to have a go at having the planets/moons/etc orbit? - It is difficult for RTSs since it common for planets to move into an indefensible position thanks to them moving between other players to wail on thanks whatever beginning position you randomly got (Interplanetary/Worbital did it pretty well though did feel pretty screwed over when two players start hammering you from either side)

Falling Frontier is looking quite ambitious. In addition to the campaign already present, players will be able to use a campaign editor to create their own works. Said editor is supposedly the same one the developer themselves is using to craft the campaign - so either that means we're getting one heckuva powerful editor, or unfortunately the campaign's gonna be one of those bare-bones experiences.

Mod support is indeed planned, but will not be available at launch.

Check out the new Falling Frontier trailer, which gives us our first look at the Falling Frontier Sol system, including a peek at both Jupiter and Mars. The latest trailer also shows off Falling Frontier's detailed new ship designer, scanning system, and logistics.

Falling Frontier is coming to PC via Steam and GOG in Q2 2022. It's available to wishlist now.

Looks a tad bit darker and grimier, and the gas clouds and nebulae are a lot more noticeable. Kinda preferred the earlier build's cleaner look.

It's certainly taking a bit for the game to come out, and there's no release date either.

Been awhile since I've posted an update in the thread, mostly because there hasn't been any significant news until the last trailer. The visuals (especially for the UI and map) received an overhaul, and we've finally got a strong idea on just how exactly will battles play out.

  • Combat largely still works on a 2D axis, but you still very much need to keep in mind that you're in space; ships will drift helplessly with momentum if their thrusters have been damaged, and the gravity of larger interstellar objects like planets can affect how a ship travels both around it's orbit or while passing by.
  • Keeping your fleet supplied will be crucial. Not only can ships run out of fuel, but also rations and munitions. Fully repairing ships back to full strength will probably only be possible at shipyards.
  • You can rename the ships in your fleet, and their names will appear on the side of it's hull.
  • Players can attempt to retrieve escape pods from destroyed vessels. However, it will become more difficult to find and recover them over time since the pods will gradually drift away from each other, further into the void of space.
  • Stealth is viable, even for larger warships. You can hide behind planetary bodies, use asteroid fields as cover, or try and hide in the blind spots of enemy sensors. And if you don't have the luxury of solid cover, you can mask your ship's heat signature by closing the heat sinks, but at the cost of the ship gradually overheating (just like in Mass Effect!).
  • Some ships can do a "180 backflip" if enemies are behind them. However, not all vessels will be as quick or nimble, so it might not be a good idea to give that order to larger ships in the heat of battle.
  • Ship modules can be targeted and destroyed, just like in Star Wars: Empire at War.
  • Over-penetration is not only a thing, but it's possible for a round fired to cut through a hull and damage a ship behind it.

STILL no solid release date though. :/

We've got a good 13 minute look of what the gameplay is now like. Great sound ambience too, reminds me of the effort Blackbird Interactive put into Home World 3's sound design and music. Not much combat thought, except for an orbital missile bombardment.
