This is my first forum post so forgive me if I say anything wrong. I was wondering if these tropes existed. if you want examples:
1. you are given the option to say "this is your fault" or "My poor child". little did you know, the first response was "This may have been your doing, but we can still fix this together" and the second was "my poor child...your mother has been blessed by an idiot!". This could be in the factor of controlling an unlikeable protagonist, being possessed with an evil spirit trying to spread both of you apart from one another or all together just nonsensical writing.
2. The big bad finally has a plan that will bring the heroes a run for their money. But the unexpected occurred. The heroes were expecting them to absolutely dominate them to a point of no return, send them into torture chambers full of unimaginable tools they never heard of. Maybe crack them with spiked leather lemoned Australian nine-tailed bullwhips and leave them to only survive on rainwater, bugs, and rat meat until winter. But it only turns out to be big bad just wanted to screw them over for messing with their stuff.
