Isla Lathu, 12:25 AM, 3 Hours After Exposure

What was once tropical paradise was now submerged into chaos and destruction.

Swarms of the undead and mutants across the vacation spot, survivors fleeing to whatever passed for safety. The beaches that were once thriving with tourists were now only home to moaning, thrashing monstrosities that were quick to devour anyone who ventured too close. The forested area to the east which was once home to scenic tours was now a toxified jungle of death leading into a repugnant bog. The township that once offered such abundant amenities was now crawling with strange creatures and a menacing figure easily 8 foot tall stalks any survivor brave enough to make the trek.

In what was once a testament to leisure and enjoyment of life, now there is only fright, horror and terror.

The United States Government, under the advisement of General Grant Maynard, commenced a blockade and enforced quarantine of the island to prevent the weapons of bio-terror which caused this chaos from escaping the island’s borders.

As the world reels at footage being streamed from this site of slaughter, only one corporation knows what has begun with this.

Umbrella Base N

The sound of combat boot clad feet hurrying down a long corridor, countless tubes broken and shattered, tubules and wires laying discarded in the midst of the chaos. The laboratory is only half lit - the emergency power only able to maintain so much. The Umbrella logo smeared with blood on one of the doors.

Agent Carter Landon of Umbrella Private Securities rushed down the hallway, ignoring the sounds of stirring things in the darkest corners of the lab. He had exactly one goal. A reddened corpse, with long overgrown nails and pronounced veins on its swollen head lunged into his path and ate a grenade instead of any flesh.

Covering himself behind a table, Carter heard the grenade explode and obliterate most of the undead’s upper body. He continued moving. He had no time to dwell on the monsters. At least not the inhuman ones.

He pounded into the door a six digit key code from memory and breathed when the door slid open. Down he went to an elevator, relieved when it didn’t either come under attack or end up derailing due to the damage to the facility from the outbreak. The agent turned and looked, pointing his rifle around as he left the elevator. The light haired agent ran for it when he heard the sound of gunfire. He turned down one last corner and shot down several death squad agents on sight in a flurry of gunfire.

He couldn’t waste any ammo, not with what was going on outside.

Agent Carter heard some gasps as the death squad down there realized what was happening and opened fire on him next, to which he quickly hid himself behind a pillar. As soon as the firing stopped, he took stock and then threw another grenade.

This flushed the last few executioners out, long enough for Carter to put an end to them. Once it was all over, he started looking around the lab. “Eli? Eli!! Please tell me you’re okay! Eli?”

One of the nearby containers, usually used for holding severely powerful test subjects like the T-Types, started to slide open. And with that Carter felt his heart sink. Carter raised his gun one final time. He didn’t think he had the arsenal on hand, even with the downed executioners here, to fight a T-Type—-

Only for a rather pasty, thin young looking scientist to stumble out of the holding area. Carter tilted his head, and then realized what happened and ran over to the young scientist, “Eli!” He helped the young man up, and checked him for any wounds, “What were you doing in there? What happened here?”

“I-I don’t know! Dr. Gnell sent me a message three hours ago that the executioners had been sent in, but I-I don’t even know for what!? So I locked myself into that empty T-Type holding cell and hoped they wouldn’t check there.” Eli sobbed as he looked around his ruined laboratory.

“Did—-did you not know?” Carter asked, looking around, “There was a breach. Something got out. The island’s under total lockdown. Lots of people are dead and not all of em are stayin’ that way.”

Eli froze up, seeming to realize something, “We—-We gotta get outta here before more executioners show up.”

“Where are we even gonna go?” Carter questioned and looked around for a good way out. He heard something coming from the direction he came from and knew that wouldn’t be a good way out. Especially not with his little brother here.

Eli pulled something into his lab coat’s pocket off one of the tables, resembling a large injector filled with black liquid, looked around and then gestured at a section of the wall, “There’s a secret exit here. Alex told me about it when I was shown around the lab—-”

“...Secret Exits…?” Carter questioned, but then shrugged his shoulders, “Fucking Umbrella.”

As the two headed out, something slithered across the floor at the entrance to the laboratory…

Isla Lathu Grand Central Resort Tower

A number of people, including five specific people, would find themselves running in toward the relative safety of the Grant Central Resort. There was a limited time frame wherein this place would even count as safe. The outside proceeding up from the “Twisting Road” heading toward the Central Resort had numerous pockets of the undead roaming around.

Among the group proceeding up toward the Central Resort was Kelly Thorndike, a wealthy and muscular young collegiate athlete who had recently discovered neither of those attributes mattered as his friends were brutally dispatched before his eyes.

Also included was one Connor Lindburn, a thinner soccer player who’d recently lost his baby brother and both his parents to the undead. He’d even had to re-kill his 6 year old brother when he rose from death as a grotesque monster.

Following behind the group significantly was a wounded young woman named Dawna Keeney, who seemed to be searching for her boyfriend. She’s almost been killed by a group of the undead before managing to escape...at a cost. Her arm was badly injured during a fall, limply dripping blood.

As the group entered the resort area it would be obvious few people managed to get to the even relative safety...and even then, there were suspicious noises coming from upstairs...

Shannon Hawkings

"Keep going, ma'am, it really isn't safe out here!" Shannon said as she slowed down in order to help Dawna right herself and continue running towards relative safety. "Please don't stop! Just don't! We're almost there as it is, and we can—we can look for other survivors once we've regrouped and figured out a plan!"

She chanced a look behind her, and found, much to her dismay, that one of the slower zombies was honing in on her, but she tipped over a pallet in order to trip it up, which seemed to work to distract it for at least a while. However, if Dawna didn't hurry it up soon, they'd both be zombie food. Shannon chose not to dwell on this and in fact continued shouting encouragements to the others as she hung back in order to look after the weaker members of the party.

Steve Delapore

Stefan muttered sourly to himself as the group moved. He hadn't wanted to get mixed in with them. Going it alone seemed smartest since a bunch of them would just draw attention. But here he was, trying to herd a group of morons through a disaster.

He pulled a small flask from a pocket and wet his mouth. Thank goodness he had his lucky baby. Once they got to...wherever they were going, he'd ditch the jocks and get about making his money and getting out of town. And hey, if Dawna wanted to tag along, he could pop her in his sidecar.

A man with much of his face peeled away made a grab for Steve. A mutilated hand jostled his, and the flask dropped down a storm drain. Growling, Stefan caught the groaning corpse with one hand around the throat. With the other, he slammed its head down on the top of a nearby fire hydrant. He scrabbled on the ground for a moment for his flask, but it was gone.

"Fuuuuck." Well, maybe he'd be able to find another drink somewhere around here. After all, it looked like the cops were busy.

James Motomura

"Fuck, what do I do now? There's got to be a way off this island....and I have to find other survivors and maybe a gun too." said the young man to himself.

James hadn't even been able to get his job uniform when all this outbreak stuff began. He couldn't even treat those who had been injured by those diseased freaks because whatever it was that was causing all this could be transmitted through bites and cuts, with blood as a major vector. He was given the order by his supervisor to stand down, hole up somewhere secure and wait for further instructions. James had gathered all the supplies he could along with his hunting knife, and then locked himself in one of those suite-style hotel rooms by himself. For now, the young medic was safe.

"This must be some kind of novel virus or something. I've never seen any disease like this. Some of the worst diseases known to humanity came from tropical climates and we are in the middle of a tropical island. Why won't my supervisor contact me, dammit? I've tried using my radio and I've even called and texted his cell phone. Still nothing!"

James didn't know what was going on. It was very likely his boss had been killed or became one of those zombie-like creatures, or maybe he was still alive but communication lines were tied up. Deciding to gather up his first aid bag and a duffle bag full of small batteries and some bottled water, the young man slung the bags over his shoulder and cautiously headed out the door of his hotel, knife in hand just in case.

"Hello? Is anyone alive in here?"

Main Group

Dawna managed to pick up the speed...just in time to evade a lunging undead that ended up landing on the floor, scraping around and coming very close to catching Shannon's foot as it crawled toward the group.

Kelly took out a baseball bat - he was something of a local star where he came from - and struck out another undead just as it staggered toward the girls, "Come on ladies! We're almost there!"

Dawna seemed still distracted by something even as she picked up the speed. She whispered, "My Carter...I have to find Carter. He swore...he told me we'd make it through this together."

By the time that Shannon and the others made it through the front doors of the resort, Connor and Kelly managing to close the doors to establish at least some relative safety...though there were still odd noises upstairs in the grand central resort tower. How safe they would be inside there remained to be seen...

Shannon would be able to, from her position, see someone walking slowly - painfully - through the area outside. The undead did not seem to consider this one a target for whatever reason. The man was young, had dirty blond hair streaked with blood and sweat, and had numerous obvious wounds that seemed to be scabbing over almost in real time. His eyes seemed entirely bloodshot, and his veins were all standing out a little too much.

Connor commented, "T-That's my friend Danny Long! He's alive! We gotta let him in!"

James

Down the hallway due to James being on a higher floor, the odd noises heard by Shannon and Steve's group downstairs would be louder. It sounded like someone scratching at metal. As James moved, he would be able to see a few of the management rooms were open and not manned at present.

There were a lot of papers strewn about on the tables.

And a few things usually under lock and key were now open as well.

Shannon Hawkings

Shannon tried to calm down Dawna as much as she could given the situation, but then she spotted the man—Danny Long—outside. At first, she agreed with Connor that he had to be let in, but after a few more moments of observation, she found that something was wrong. Very wrong.

"No. No! Don't let him in!" she pleaded with the rest of the group. "Look—he's not being attacked, he's hurt already, but he looks sick and unhealthy. Whatever he is now, he's—he's one of the things out there, I'm sure of it! Don't let him in. There's a reason why he's being ignored. He's one of them now."

Stefan

He nodded in agreement. "The little chickie's right. Fellow ain't looking too good. Even if he's not sick like them, he might be high or got something else, and we already have enough on our plate. Can't get him to a hospital. Leave him be-I'd get used to it getting ugly around here. Not a pleasant place."

Stefan glanced around the area. There had to be some weapons around here. Hell, he'd take the ironic route and grab a steel chair if needs must. But like any good American, he knew a gun would be best.

Or some money. Even some booze. Money wouldn't stop you from bleeding out, but it could buy you a trip out of here if you found the right person, he'd reckon. Stefan had met junkies, psychos, even a dude who called himself a voodoo priest (nice guy). This was a whole new kind of shit, though. Zombies. Why'd it have to be zombies?

Turning around and looking both ways, the halls were empty and nobody seemed to be on this floor. But as the young medic ventured out, he noticed something....

"Who left these doors unlocked? Maybe I can get some key supplies or at least a way to make contact with any other survivors."

Immediately, James Motomura darted out to the unlocked open doors of the rooms and began to sift through the desks and unlocked cabinets and containers for important supplies or even some documents that could contain useful information.

"...Dammit...sorry man." Connor whispered and then stalked off and just started pacing around. By now the adrenaline high had faded and he and Kelly were just starting to feel it sink in. That they were basically stranded on an island, full of the walking dead and worse. And that if Connor's best friend was any indication, anyone could be infected.

Kelly was by now trying to call his rich father, but his phone was not working. "Fuck...fuck fuck fuck! My phone won't work! We're...I think we're stranded here. Stranded with all of that."

Stefan would be able to see a few formerly closed up cabinets inside of the front desk of the resort, as well as a few opened up rooms. It looked like there had already been something of a struggle in here. The windows on the sides of the next few rooms were closed, but not very securely...

James

James would find a few documents in there and it appeared that there had been some communication between the resort's staff and someone else. As well as some documentation.

To one Dr. Landon,

We have continued our working arrangement, many thanks for your generous contributions. We very much appreciate this mutual benefit between our resort and your corporation. I don't know why you insist on letters rather than on emails, but I will respect your wishes.

The health club onsite will offer these finished products as part of its services, and in exchange, anyone who for whatever reason might end up experiencing negative side effects will be treated at your North Facility.

Security measures in the sewers are appreciated of course, and I look forward to continuing our working relationship.

Security Measures

We have commenced working with Umbrella's Security Team in the interest of collaboration. Heading the exercise is Agent Landon, the good doctor's brother.

Agent Landon is very cagey about everything, seems worried about something.

If it's the sewers we probably have it secured.

Included was a picture, showing a few of Umbrella's security team, including Agent Carter Landon, a tall, dark blond haired young man in his twenties with a cleanshaven military man's look to him, a very well muscled, handsome look to him, and dressed in body armor, carrying his helmet in one hand in the picture.

There was a bang in the next room over, like someone stumbling around. And then a sound like something smashing a door open further on.

James would also find curiously enough a small handgun amidst the cabinets.

"W-wait," Shannon said quietly, not quite willing to lose her mind and start screaming yet. "I think the staff on the island were trying to broadcast some sort of advertisement just before this whole disaster started. If we can find their equipment, maybe we can use it to radio in for help."

"Before that, we need to start looking for food, weapons, supplies, and stuff," she continued, voice growing steadily stronger. "And we're going to have to venture out to find the broadcasting station eventually, but we need to make a good base first. We're going to be here for a while..."

Shannon then started shifting furniture over to the windows in order to make several makeshift barriers against the outside. The barricade wouldn't do much against a strong, sustained assault, but it would at least keep them from being noticed by much of the undead roaming around outside. Hopefully.

Standing off to the side, Talcot observed the group that he had found himself in. So many interesting faces. How many of them would be intact by the end of this whole thing? There wasn’t time to dwell on that yet. Hearing Shannon’s suggestion, he would pipe up. “If they were shooting an add there would only be recording equipment. I also doubt that any broadcasts would make it past whatever setup the have containing this place.” His voice seemed laced with uncertainty. He had seen a lot of shit, but this was something new entirely. “We can only assume that the situation is high enough risk that we aren’t leaving any time soon.”

"Umbrella? The pharmaceutical company? Interesting."

While pondering the implications of the documents he was reading, the young man heard a huge commotion nearby, and went to check it out, but not before finding a handgun and taking it with him. Approaching the hallway, James had his pistol ready as he called out asking if anyone was there. If it was a normal uninfected person, they'd at least try to respond while one of those ghoulish freaks would not, or at best would incoherently groan or grunt.

James

As James got closer to the sounds, he would actually hear some rather odd, strangled cries coming from one of the rooms. It certainly sounded like human speech, but human speech filtered through water, "Someone...please help...help me...help! I don't know what went wrong..." There was a sound somewhat like something wet flailing around in the room.

The Main Group

There would be a sound like a window breaking further on down one of the hallways past the blockade that Shannon set up. This made Connor almost fall backward clean on his ass, and Kelly looked in the direction of the sound. Seemed like it had come from the kitchen. "I...dunno what we're supposed to do from here, but we gotta survive. Get ourselves off this island. And maybe...maybe getting to the broadcasting station would help with that."

Meanwhile

"Remind me again why I let you drive!?" Eli was feeling like he was caught between a rock and a hard place. Well, more like caught between the zombie horde on the ground and his brother's patently insane driving. The van that Carter had commandeered was probably not made for speeding along the road from the Northern Base, let alone bowling over any undead in its path.

"Because I'm your only driver! And you don't even have your driver's permit!" Carter said with a slight grin as their van sent a couple more undead sprawling out of the way.

Eli had vetoed the path through the woods for good reason, namely that he didn't think one of the secret projects had stayed in containment over there. Carter had for his part instantly believed him on the secret projects part.

Now they were heading toward the main resort, but they had a ways to go.

Shannon froze like a deer in the headlights as soon as she heard the sound of breaking glass, and swallowed nervously. "Guys...I think something's broken in..." she whispered, eyes wide with fear. "We're going to—we're going to need weapons."

She broke a flimsy-seeming chair and hefted one of its legs up to make a makeshift bat. The nail that used to hold the leg to the rest of the chair was still present in the thing, too. Shannon hoped this would help in combating whatever had just entered the kitchen. "Everyone else grab a leg," she said, slightly braver now that she had a weapon in her hand.

Kitchen Creatures

All at once something came rushing out of the kitchen area - a pair of dobermans...though notably looking emaciated and sickened. They had remnants of foam at the mouth, their claws looking more pronounced and overgrown, scratching at the floor as they ran. The dogs seemed to have purely white eyes, and the teeth in their mouths seemed larger and sharper than usual.

There was no question about what these were - zombie dogs.

James

What James would see in there did not look like it was any sort of humanoid figure at all. Partially bound to a gurney by some straps and metallic pieces was what looked like something that had once been human - a head that now seemed covered in tendrils thrashing at the air, a pronounced mouth full of teeth, two layers of teeth no less, and it seemed the creature's limbs now no longer had anything preventing them from moving in any direction, and seemed leaner and stronger but with visible purple veins.

Across this...man (???)'s body were many tentacles desperately thrashing to try and remove the many straps and metallic pieces holding it to the gurney.

"Please...help me. They told me this would cure me...but I feel even worse! And there are...I heard monsters outside. I have to get up or they'll eat me for sure!"

What was more, this pitiful subject did not even seem to realize he was not exactly human any more himself.

James

"Jesus Christ, this is really fucking bad!" blurted out the medic loudly in a mad panic. The thing that was flailing around on the gurney was once a human and wasn't even aware of his mutations. It was one of those fucked up "I have no mouth and I must scream" scenarios, real Cronenburg shit as his buddies at EMT training classes would call it.

"Sir, close your eyes. There might be a brief stinging sensation as I get you off this thing and can get you out of here. If you don't look down, it'll be over more quickly. Mind over matter and all that."

Doing his best to calm the man down, James knew that there was no way he could fix this with either his level of training or the supplies on hand. With all the shit that was going down on this island, James Motomura had to make one of the toughest calls in his entire life.

Taking a deep breath, he pulled out his pistol and shot the writhing mutated individual in the head twice with the intent of putting him out of his misery in the quickest and least painful way possible. James immediately broke down crying as he stepped out of the room and slumped down against the wall in the hallway.

Shannon did not even think.

As soon as one of the zombie dogs leapt for her, she swung her chair leg like a baseball bat. It's just a ball, she thought to herself. Just think of them as balls. You shouldn't worry about anything else. Just focus on hitting them properly. Focus!

Because she was one of the heavy-hitters on her school's baseball team, she had swung with enough force and speed to crack bones and shatter a skull. Hopefully that would help her and the others fight off the zombie dogs.

A familiar high struck Talcot as the dog ran towards him. After that high, however, something else set in.

“GO, GO, GO!” A wispy voice rang all throughout Talcot’s mind. His arms tensed as he saw the zombie dogs replaced with real ones. Bloodhounds now ran at him and another, and suddenly...”AHHHHHH!” One caught his fellow soldiers leg. That man was down and dead in seconds. Quickly, Talcot fired three shots in quick succession at the dogs, with degrading aim as the shots continued.
