Episode 5:

Aaaaaaaaand more flashbacks on both Marlya and Veronica and it tells us Veronica failed to kill the man who burned their village, Ray Dawn. Also, the fight between Jonathan feels a bit intense but Veronica kills him in a rather brutal fashion which is fitting. Free's battle however, was nyeh but man why on earth he gave the briefcase with a black tome towards the enemy that want to kill you. I don't get it. Also, in the end, more introductions of Marlya's gang members which is yay I guess?

Episode 6. A fairy-less episode for once! With a few badass moments for Marlya and Clara. The story is still a bit confusing, but I'm starting to figure out which characters' names are worth remembering and which are not. Kinda.

(the character page is quite helpful in that regard, I must say)

Episode 6:

Well the story still ended up becoming more confusing than ever. So there are several dukes who conspire behind the scenes to take down the Kingdom of Zesskia and most of them are died? Okay. Meanwhile, some flashbacks on Klara and both Marlya and Klara tries to retrieve the Black Fairy Tome but failed because why not?

Episode 7 (Copypaste cuz lazy):

Hmm given how the empire is structured turf wars like this must be commonplace. Still the fairies present an interesting problem as they are used by both the military and the ministry of fairies. After their last teamup its nice to see Marlya and Klara team up again for a UC mission. The contrast between the Marlya's UC mission and the quest to find the reason for the berserk fairies sure was interesting both in expanding upon the mysteries that they are trying to solve as well as showing the kind of stakes that they battle with as part of their duties. An interesting ep that while expanding upon the crisis around the auto fairies also introduced a new target that was possessing forbidden tomes that required the intervention of Dorothea. Bitter's betrayal was to expected but i hope that Marlya and Klara have a plan of their own to compensate. It feels like the enemies plan is starting to approach its fruition though im curious as to what goal they have with this power to cause fairies to go haywire. (PS Not my thought... The only thing I remember is that Bitter Sweet works together)

Episode 8 (copypaste too cuz the series got convoluted and gonna do a rewatch soon):

Sweeties plan though a risky one sure ended up to be surprisingly successful. Though her betrayal was to be expected. Well with the kind of jobs that they do i doubt many people have a high opinion of the MP's and the SB. Hmm so the culprit was actually one that was in front of us all along. Though the plot was a close one its good that they managed to stop it in time. Looks Ray Dawn was indeed the one pulling strings behind the scenes on account of the fact that he didn't step in to protect the PM. A pretty calm ep that while bringing an end to this investigation also served to show that even if the war is over schemes and grudges are still in effect behind the scenes. Seems that Ray dawn has more cards to play though.

I still need to give this episode a rewatch but from what I recall, it's mostly about fights in train and Dorothea lost the battle I guess?

Yikes, that was brutal… That fairy sword is kinda shitty though. You'd expect a coup de grâce to be an instakill, but instead it just… made the guy's death slightly faster?

Huh, is this the first episode where no new characters are introduced? I can't remember if we saw the Colonel and his bunch before…

Episode 10! Not a very eventful episode, but that was probably needed (although there's still some exposition here and there). It mostly serves to aleviate Marlya's severe self-esteem issues, but it's not easy − life has dealt her a shitty hand and she always ended up in places where people were likely to die. But instead she ended up thinking that people died because she was there, no matter how little sense that made. This kind of irrational fear is hard to uproot completely.

Episode 11… Oh hey, the Duke started a rebellion. Who would have thunk. All the antagonist are uniting to bring down the Emperor it seems. It doesn't help that said Emperor is protected by stormtroopers.

It's a dramatic and interesting turn of events, but for some reason I can't manage to care as much as I should…

Y'know, show, when you have a guy casually walk into a hail of bullets which somehow all miss him, you're not making the guy look badass, you're making the shooters look incompetent.

And talking about how this invincible gate has never been breached at any point in history also falls flat if you don't actually show us any noteworthy defences on it and have the bad guys plow through it effortlessly.

Episode 12 caps off the first half of the series. And boy, that's the most unenthusiastic "We've won" I've ever heard. It's quite clear Marlya has no idea what she's fighting for here.

So… What the hell happened to the Prime Minister at the end? Was he captured? Is he dead?

Welp, the rest will be in October. Not sure splitting the series was the right call though.

Episode 12:

I'm still confused on what happened in this show? Marlya and co. won? Alright... So Wolfram has been working with Ray Dawn all along? Okay...I'm still confused as hell.

Thoughts on the First Cour: While I'm going to look on the future second cour, I won't gonna lie the story is a bit of a mess and feels disjointed at times. I also felt rather unengaged and mostly confused at its finest mainly because I don't really know or really care what happened in the story because so many info-dumps that need to be processes. Granted, it's Aoi Jumonji's first work on scripting something. But I feel much more confused rather than engaged and this could be mistaken as a LN more than anime. Hopefully the second cour fix it but I don't know. I really need to give this anime a rewatch

Episode 13! So Ray Dawn did have a reason to burn the village beyond being an evil asshole; though that's still part of it. And it turns out Marlya was ostracized because some religious fanatics decided that her birth was a bad thing. I have much less sympathy for the villagers, all of a sudden.

Good restart. I'm glad that they didn't bombard us with new characters and infodumps right of the bat, like in the first cour.

Finally finished it.

The second half was better overall, but it was still plagued by the same core problem, namely that characters spent more time standing around to explain the plot than actually doing stuff. Plus generally inconsistent animation, despite a noticeable bump in episode 22.

Still, the last 4 episodes were clearly the best in the series, mainly because the stakes were finally palpable and the drama had actual substance behind it. I can't say it didn't hurt a little when Vero died. I just wish the show had stayed this focused all the way through. =[

This is really a damn shame when you think about it. It feels like this show suffered from being a tad overambitious − too many characters and plotlines to keep track of, and too little time to really develop any of them as a result. The drab color palette and crappy CGI didn't really help matters. With a more streamlined script, it could have been really excellent; it ended up being just okay.

[up]I can agree that the show had an issue with too many characters and plot points being introduced all at once to the point we didn't get to really know a lot of them and on top of that many of them ended up dying fast on the antagonist side anyways which felt like a bit of a waste tbh. The CGI isn't that great but I am pretty used to seeing bad CGI.

I personally don't think the color palette was too drab. Their certainly was some pretty scenes in the anime with the different towns.

One thing I can say is I do like Marlya as a character if only because I am tired of seeing ridiculous badass main protags all of the time and her being relatively pacifistic but still can hold her own near the end of the anime is nice. I know some people didn't like her but considering how her early life was I think people are being way too harsh on her. I mean the poor girl was regarded as cursed and outcasted by her home town since birth just because both her parents died tragically to no fault of their own.

Overall I think the anime could of used many more episodes to develop the characters better. Especially the antagonists. Ray Dawn did get some development but his felt a bit too fast near the end? And he died too quickly.
