Other people seem to be agreeing with this, and the discussion is slowly bringing me around to at least understanding the point of view as well.
But in that case, Fan-Preferred Couple may still need a Trope Talk or TRS discussion of its own. If only because I decided to read its current description more carefully than usual this morning, and only then did I notice it seems to leave more wiggle space than I thought it did.
"Often, but not always, involves disregarding a competing Official Couple with extreme prejudice." can be found near the end of the description.
Edit on 04/01/19: While cooling my heels and taking proper time to find out more about the situation, I discovered people had already been there and done that concerning Fan-Preferred Couple back in 2017. According to the old threads I found, my initial understanding that it requires an Official Couple was right

OTP is a purely personal phenomenon and as such has no trope value. We can have a definition page and that's it.
