My mom remembers that episode and she says it was him on-screen with the accordion so unless he's really good at accordion syncing, he does play. We were looking for something to watch anyway, so I think we're diving into this show.
ETA: It's $9.99 a season on Amazon Instant Video, but it's only in Standard Definition.

Yep, he did play it.
Relatedly, in the episode where we learn Dan's real given name (from a childhood acquaintance who held Dan hostage until Dan could remember who he was — it's Reinhold, which is a reference to the show's creator, Reinhold Weege ) the episode ends with a shot of a photo of young Dan cheerfully playing the accordion.
But is it a picture of young John Laroquette playing the accordion?
Sorry for the long delay in responding everyone, but I got busy with some things and I had to wait for some items to come in which led to a big gift for a special occasion that I recently had.
But thank you all for answering my question.

Thanks Journeyman. I knew it was real too, but just wanted to confirm to make sure whether the picture was fake or not.

I’m a woman and am proud to be one!
So I have been meaning to ask this question for a long time, and it just popped up in my head all of a sudden. So here I go asking about this.
Found under The Cast Showoff on the Night Court Trivia page.
John Larroquette showed off in two episodes. Once, his ability as a Motor Mouth of a description of the charges against a defendant in the episode "Day in the Life" and his skill as an accordionist in an episode that was a homage to "The Phantom of the Opera".
Has anyone seen the episode A Guy Named Phantom? Is the accordion playing all him even real? Did he really play it?
I would really like to know and find out if this is real or not and any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
