I noticed we didn't have one of these, and I'm curious how many other tropers out there are diabetic too, assuming of course I'm not the only one. A bit about myself first to get the conversation going: I was diagnosed at the age of 14 in the summer of '09 with Type 1 diabetes. My last A 1 C was 7.2, which isn't as good as it normally is for me but I'll take it. Overall I'm doing a good job of managing things, but college makes it difficult sometimes.

This can be a thread for anyone with diabetes - Type 1 or Type 2 - to discuss management and care of their diabetes while also seeking advice. If you want you can just talk about diabetes in general, and how it affects your daily life. Anyone is welcome, whether you were diagnosed yesterday or for your entire life. I also welcome non-diabetics to post here if they feel that they have anything to contribute; all thoughts are welcome.

After the recent changing of the guard in Washington all I can say is I wish every diabetic all the best. I see Eli Lily celebrated by giving their insulin another price hike, and my state's insurance will probably be dropping coverage of it next year altogether.

I've been type 1 for 33 years. One of my pet peeve tropes is "If there's a diabetic on the show, that guy is gonna need a shot!" As you and I know, if a T1 has become unresponsive, can't walk or talk etc., what they need is a juice box and if someone gives 'em a shot it's going to kill 'em. Unless it's Glucagon, which it never is (well, excepting "Panic Room," though you have to be watching closely to know).

And what's with that Law and Order episode based on the Claus Bulow case, where the couple claim they were using insulin to try to lose weight. LOSE weight? It makes you ravenously hungry and it's the thing that turns excess blood glucose into fat, and they're gonna LOSE weight on it??? WTF???

Oh don't get me started on all the diabetes tropes that I absolutely loathe. It's actually incredible how little people actually know about diabetes. Several times I've been tempted to propose a trope called All Diabetes Is Type Two, since in every media appearance it's always Type 2.

I'm really hoping that if I ever pass out from a low blood sugar that there's no idiot rushing to give me an insulin shot. Luckily I've yet to pass out or go into hypoglycemic shock, but if I do I'm fortunately surrounded by a bunch of family and friends whom I've taught how to handle the situation should it arise.
