My problem with Yatsu no Kami is that I'm always distracted by how bizarre it is. Giant horned snake! With snake arms!
Also, the single worst thing I've yet fought whilst using claws. They're so bad at dealing with it due to range...
Avatar SourceSo after replaying that mission to get a Poison Pearl I moved onto the next region.
Man, those old woman demons are freaky.
Anyway, fought Imagawa. Took a few tries to beat him but it was pretty fun.
Btw, what Soul Cores do you all use? I've been using Enki and Mezuki so far for their abilities. I'm also using the Snake Guardian now since I prefer Brute.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThings you won't have for a long time.
Avatar SourceAt this part of the game I used Enki and Yatsu no Kami. Sometimes Ippon-datara too.

I like Mezuki's wide swing at that point.
The real problem is that they end up underlevelled if you stick with them, so in NG it's not great to get too attached to specific abilities.
Avatar SourceYeah I just switched out Mezuki for a higher leveled Yoki Core. It helps that it has Enemy Sensor.
Disgusted, but not surprisedCompleted the next main mission, the one with the giant weasel as a boss.
Man, that level's a bit of a grueling trek, isn't it. I especially hate fighting those giant worm-man things. The Nure Onna showing up in multiple places didn't help either.
I found that the weasel was the first opponent for which I found the Odachi to be rather inadequate. It felt too slow for me to reliably land hits on the weasel which kept moving all over the place. I switch to the axe, and that worked out better.
Disgusted, but not surprisedYeah, it's a long level, though the giant guys whose name temporarily forgets me are really just punching bags for the most part.
Never really had too much trouble with the kamai-tachi and the odachi, but then again ultra weapons in Dark Souls have been my go-to, so kind of practised at using slow weapons.
Avatar SourceKamitachi gave me less trouble than Yatsu no Kami.
Waira do suck but they're weak to poison so I used Yatsu's soul core with Shirohebi.
I kind of wish I could go back to earlier regions for farming. Oh well.
Disgusted, but not surprised...Would you believe I didn't know you could return to a previous region just by zooming out of the map until just now after looking it up?
Disgusted, but not surprisedAlright, finished the sub-missions in the second region, meaning I just have to tackle the Hollow Fortress mission. I'll farm earlier missions first to get some spare Elixirs and Arrows — those sub-missions ended up eating a lot of my supplies. Especially that one with the kappa thief that has a gauntlet of foes including two Nure-Onna and a Tengu at the end.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWell, if you pick everything up and find all the kodama and then donate all the junk to the kodama, you end up with enough elixirs to last for ages/divine rice to buy elixirs and arrows.
Avatar SourceAlright, beat Hollow Fortress, the unlocked sub-missions, and cleared A Way Out in the third region.
Man, those searchlight things were a pain. I know I was supposed to avoid them, but I kept messing up. I eventually went "screw it" and chipped away at them with ranged weapons. Got an achievement for it at least.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI've found that the first Tatarimokke searchlight is easier to dispatch than the second one. The second one always felt a little hardier to me.
I was going to wear the Genryu set, but the encumbrance made it not practical. I ended up going back to the Sohaya set since higher level pieces of it started dropping for me.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI haven't got that far yet. Still waiting for my PS 4 to get fixed.
I heard Tatarimokke is a pain.
Beat Yasuke and got his set. Too bad my stamina is still too low, and I do not feel like respeccing.
Disgusted, but not surprisedBeat Magara Naotaka, but unfortunately didn't get any Smithing Texts to drop from him. A shame — I really wanted that water Odachi.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe good thing is that almost every boss has an associated mission which is nothing before the boss fight or only a short trip to the boss fight, which makes it way easier to farm drops.
Avatar SourceI'm guessing "Brother's Blades" is the farm mission for him. Welp, guess I'll be getting some practice fighting him.
Disgusted, but not surprisedSo I decided to try farming A Formal Match first for Yasuke's Smithing Text drops. I lucked out and got the Smithing Texts for Gozutenno's Axe and the Obsidian Armor in the 2nd and 3rd farming attempts respectively. Having a bit more trouble getting the Starcutter Smithing Text to drop though.
As for Brothers' Blades...hoo boy. I was not expecting that Revenant to show up.
Disgusted, but not surprisedYeah, you need to kill his brothers first (head to the camp) or they're gonna join your fight part way.
Avatar Source
After several attempts with the Demon Axe, I switched to the Bloodspider Blade Odachi. I figured the extra overhead reach would help me chop off the snake arms.
Still took a few more tries, but I beat it.
I then took on the sub missions. Let me tell you, "The Greedy Hunter" was pretty intense.
