Almost certainly, but obviously not as bad as actual death in life.

The talk of dying makes me wonder if the NW have an actual Afterlife connected to it.

And if it does, would it be completely untouched like the original New World once was or infested with YGGDRASIL-code as well?

Souls do seem to go somewhere after death. It is at least possible to use resurrection magic. Though said magic is extraordinarily rare in the New World.

Death for most is permanent in the New World.

@M84 The elf king is also the child of a PC, so benefits from that.

I haven't kept up (due to real life and 3 kids not allowing a lot of watching unfortunately), but was it mentioned anywhere where Azuth got the powered armor? I do assume that it's the main reason he was able to get to level 60 as a human too.

He isn't level 60. That's not how the Armor of Reinforcement works. It works by replacing its user's stats except for HP and MP with its own.

Azuth's baseline stats are noted to be weaker than the average Adamantite Adventurer. It doesn't help that his Job levels are all geared towards optimal use of the Armor. He'd be at best an Orichalcum Adventurer without it.

[up][up][up] Now I'm just picturing an Isekai where a Final Fantasy player ends up as Emperor Mateus.

Dude already has experience travelling to other worlds.

Going back to Overlord, the greater cosmology of the New World isn't really addressed. So far there have been no confirmed native deities despite the existence of divine clerical magic. Even the Six Gods worshiped by the Slane Theocracy were originally Yggdrasil Players.

All we know is that souls are a thing, since resurrection magic like the one-time use wands work. Souls are also used to fuel the New World's native Wild Magic.

[up][up] Only HE is worthy of wielding that scepter.

There is just so much innuendo that would work in Overlord. [lol]

As overpowered as Ainz and Nazarick are compared to the New World, it's interesting to note that in theory there's no guarantee that a New Worlder will never surpass them. As powerful as Ainz and the rest of the Nazarick npc's are, they are limited by their nature as former game avatars and npc's brought to life. They are entirely bound by the original game mechanics of Yggdrasil. Ainz in the LN at one point speculates that the Level Cap of Yggdrasil might not apply to New Worlders, meaning a New Worlder over level 100 could appear in theory. And it's also already been confirmed that there's at least one way to overcome the level cap. A certain magical Ring of Power crafted with Wild Magic has the seemingly mild effect of raising a Warrior class bearer's effective level by 5. Word of God has said that if a warrior like the level 100 Cocytus wore it, he would become level 105.

New Worlders also have access to powers native to their world that weren't in Yggdrasil such as the Martial Arts and Wild Magic (though only the Dragon Lords can really use the latter). Yggdrasil beings can only use the Tier Magic from the game. Not that it matters much since the level difference is still too great.

This is one of the major reasons I like that Overlord's not a straightforward game isekai. Ainz's knowledge of game mechanics and the power of his level 100 avatar and guild are huge advantages, but they don't grant him all of the knowledge of what's in the New World. It thus lacks the weakness of isekai stories where the gamer ends up in the world of the game — namely, that it's kind of boring when the protagonist knows almost everything about the setting, characters, and plot from the start.

The other nice thing about Overlord is I don't have to deal with status screens and a laundry list of skills, levels, etc. Listening to the So What, I'm a Spider audiobook, as great as the narrator is, the fact they have to list all the skills is ridiculous. It's nice the Overlord just puts all the character info in an appendix and most combat has no status screens and just has spells that are essentially ripped from DND.

That's one of the reasons Overlord not being a straightforward game isekai works. The New World isn't actually a game so it doesn't offer anyone QOL game mechanics like status screens you can look up to check your progress. As I mentioned before, this is one of the reasons it's so hard for New Worlders to become powerful.

At this point, it might just be that Nazarick would be uncontested for centuries in the New World until possibly Momonga gets bored and decides to simply train a homegrown hero himself to the power levels needed to challenge them.

Or equips someone with gear from the tomb. I've wondered how strong a 'Gazef' level dude might be in their gear.

He would never want to train a hero to challenge him. Ainz is both cowardly and pragmatic.

Heck, that's the whole reason he's been so paranoid throughout the story. The incident with Shaltear in particular made him realize that there are things in the New World that can threaten Nazarick.

[up][up]Unless it was a World Item, the level difference would still be too great. Remember that the high level npc's also have high level gear.

And while Gazef is the standard of comparison most used in the New World, he's not actually the strongest it has to offer. He's strong by New World standards, but he has not yet reached the "realm of heroes". Heck, Hamsuke is probably stronger than him.
