Frodo is Terra and Sam is Ven. Largely because the thought of Sam's voice coming out of Ven's mouth is funny to me.

Yen Sid is obviously Gandalf.

Nah, Gandalf is Mickey. He actually does shit and disappears at times.

Yen Sid is one of those elf guys. I don't know much about LOTR.

Honestly, if I'd compared characters to Frodo and Sam, I wouldn't use them as a 1 for 1 basis:

Frodo (or Team Shell Shocked): Ven, Terra, Aqua and depending on your point of view, Riku.

Sam (or Team Happy Ending): Sora and Kairi.

I'd honestly just say that Mickey is both comparable to Aragorn and Gandalf because he's a important player in these events and took a more active role in the second book/game. Oh and he runs a country. Yeah.

Donald and Goofy can be compared to Gimle and Legolas but I'd also compare them to Gandalf in giving Sora his goal for the first game.

I compared Yen Sid to Gandalf because they're both the extremely powerful character who supports the heroes but never actually does anything themself.

Still, Gandalf actually does do shit, unlike Yen Sid. I think Yen Sid's Elrond.

On the subject of Mickey as Aragorn, the item you buy to unlock him in 358/2 Days is called "Return of the King" and I'm pretty sure that reference was still in there even in the Japanese version considering fan translators got that joke immediately. Impressive considering how bad those are sometimes.

EDIT: I'm wondering whether I should frontload the Author's Note of my next chapter of Chain with all my lgbtq headcanons about the characters.

They already affect how I've written them so far, but I dunno whether people would. Mind.

I mean, I'm writing for the AO 3 crowd, so. Demographic and social politics-wise they and their views and stances align with mine, so.

...I think my most controversial headcanon is that Donald Duck is trans, with "canonical" "evidence" even, because the recent Mickey Mouse cartoons have had jokes about Donald laying eggs. And Ducks with dicks don't do that.

The jokes aren't even that funny, but kinda. Weird. And gross? Because Goofy talks about eating Donald's eggs. Which. Is pretty eww?

...The idea of trans!Donald Duck brings me to this whole other thing in tandem with Donald Duck's history as a character, especially since I got really into the 2017 reboot of Ducktales but that's. A whole other story.

I will freely admit my motivation for it is probably not even so much genuine desire to write representation as much as it is annoyance over bad biology jokes and a desire to spite Disney.

Of course, I also headcanon Axel and Marluxia as trans, and between them and Donald that's. Three transmen with low-key minor misogyny? Which. Is sorta a trope, and I know that there are some trans-men that are a little like that, sometimes but it's still. Weird. On a gut level.

I also. Headcanon Ventus as trans for some reason? And it's. Weird. Because the reason I headcanon him and Marluxia as trans now is. Union Cross?

I could not explain to you. Why. There's no explanation. And I dunno that it needs one, but. My first thought in both of those scenes where they showed up (well, second thought, besides "what the fuck are they doing here") was; "oh, they're trans, neat". There's no. Factual basis for it. And I personally dont think it needs one, ymmv. But it is not a thought I can shake or imagine any other way.

Like. You don't understand, within the space of. Seconds. Of Ven and Lauriam in Union X I already had fanfic in my head of Lauriam teaching Ven how to breastbind properly.

And when Vanitas and Marluxia showed up in the D23 KH3 trailer it was a follow-up fic in my head with Vanitas awkwardly thanking Marluxia for it.

Ventus isn't in "The Sea-Change of Fate" yet and I dunno when he will be or. Could be.

And. I think I did imagine Marluxia as cis when I started writing it, because the Union X stuff hadn't happened yet.

I view Xion as. Canonically? Trans, in the sense that. Being trans isn't even as much about your junk as what gender you're assigned at birth. And the Organization assigned her "it" and from "this puppet will play her part" she definitely still identifies as "she".

I have Namine always refer to Xion with feminine pronouns so far as part of the "always that gender on the inside" narrative, which isnt the only trans narrative but is a valid one.

At the last part of my story where Namine and Xion interacted Xion was still a blank puppet as featureless as a ken doll without even a face. Namine still respected her as a girl.

Kairi I've been writing as pansexual and demiromantic. And polyamorous. So far the only people she's "in-love" with are Sora and Riku, her thing with the girls she's had the hots for so far is she just wants to make out with them and maybe sex, but not like. A mortgage and wedding rings and stuff. Committment.

Sora is demisexual and maybe demiromantic? I've been writing him as only really getting turned on by Kairi and Riku. All the other girls and boys in the series could throw themselves at him naked and his only reaction would be to try to get them a blanket.

Riku is bi.

I've headcanoned all of the Destiny Trio kids as having had low-key crushes on Aqua and, in Riku's case, Terra after BBS. Sora and Kairi sorta. Forgot. As they got older, and they were kids at the time so it was just. Innocent, puppy love. Although Kairi remembered Aqua a little in the first fic in the series, and puberty is happening so.

Riku's crush on Terra adds a. Weird. Level to his dynamic with Ansem. That I haven't plotted out all the way yet.

But I was inspired by the idea by the part in DDD where Riku says "when I look at you" he's reminded of Terra when he looks at Ansem. Which is bizarre, because Ansem looks more like Young Xehanort and Xemnas looks like Terra to me, but. Crushes and hormones are weird and confusing and contradictory and don't always make sense I guess.

I’m in little position to comment on the particularities of trans representation, not being trans myself - I suppose if you’re concerned about how some aspects of your headcanons might come across, it might be a good idea to ask someone who is trans.

Otherwise, you do you, though personally I think it’s best to save the longer author’s notes for the end of the chapter.

Out of curiosity, will any of these be stated outright in the fic itself?

I don't like character-bashing per se.

At most, I will celebrate a character because of how much of a terrible piece of shit they are and how that makes for interesting storytelling, but. With Jiminy, that's where my approach just sorta goes to die because there's nothing there to work with.

But then, I thought that about Ansem Seeker of Darkness too, and over writing 12.8 I found an approach to handling him and his character that I like and find interesting enough to sink my teeth into.

I would definitely avoid character-bashing, yeah.

As far as depicting transphobia goes, you should probably ask a trans person, if you haven’t already.

So, to give everyone some. Insight. Into my writing process.

One plotline I've kicked around and keeps ending up in my plot outlines and drafts before I delete it because I think it's too crack!fic is the Nobody that gave Xion flowers in the manga decides to name herself Marx because she notices that the Organization names have the "x" in them and, doesn't know the actual exact significance of the "x" (because to be fair Xemnas never explains it until DDD) and leads a revolution of lesser Nobodies to turn against Xemnas.

And then ends up in a lesbian polyamorous relationship with Xion and Naminé. And sometimes Roxas but then it stops. Being lesbian. And also starts getting weirdly incestuous and at that point I tend to decide to shut it all down.

Another idea I keep discarding is.

In this Wonderland chapter I keep wanting to make the Prose style more like. Lewis Carroll's? In the original classic Alice in Wonderland books. But I keep giving up on that because my style seems more focused on dialogue and action and my prose sucks, even though I prefer prose and hate dialogue and action, and emulating a style with good prose is too hard.

...Also, Alice says "what's the use of a book with no pictures in it" and I wanna do something for her but I have no artistic talent so, sorry Alice my good bitch?

I'll bite.

Are we sure Xion has any junk? The implication is that replicas start out as totally blank slates and develop their identity based on who they're copying (which is something that's at least much more clear in the manga). Xion didn't pan out as intended and turned into Kairi 3.0, so she shouldn't have a penis. Probably.

Anyway, you do what you want - it's your fic. That said, I do think the appeal is the What If? nature of things, so going too out there might be a bit much.

I have been interested in writing a Xion/Namine pairing in the past, so I'd absolutely be okay if you did something along those lines.

As for prose stuff, I say feel free to give it a try, but if you don't feel like it's working, then play to your strengths. I look forward to seeing what you have planned for Alice!

We only see what the blank Replica templates look like in the manga, and there they don't seem to have. Eyes. Or mouths. Or hair. So.

I mean, the thing is, none of the games show us what genitals the characters have.

There's not even stuff like. Peeing standing up.

So. That's not me changing anything. That's the text being up for interpretation, and me just going with an interpretation that is unpopular.

There's a thing where, from what I can tell. Roxas and Xion in Days seem to have about the same height and about the same model. Except Xion's Organization Black Coat boots have. Heels. But as far as I can tell they're. Like, about the same dimensions?

If you took pixel measurements of Xion and Roxas's chests and hips and stuff. I haven't done it, but I imagine the measurements would be almost exactly identical.

So. That's a thing?

Like. Real talk, the biggest change to Xion's model when she gets Sora's face is going from high-heels to big clown shoes.

Ah, that's a fair point about the genitalia, yeah.

Do you have a picture of those blank Replicas? When I picture what a blank Replica would look like, I usually recall an old issue of JLA, where all the members of the Justice League with dual identities are split into two people (superhero and civilian), and at one point when Batman's mask is removed, his entire upper head is just bare skin - he doesn't even have eyes.

I thought Xion had a slightly skinnier, "feminine" model. Or was I just imagining that?

Re: genitalia

We don't need to see their genitalia to know if they're cis or not since The Law of Conservation of Detail is a thing (plus consider these games were made in a significantly less LGBT-conscious time period). Xion's the only outlier here due to Replica weirdness, and even then there's a possibility she's sexless. Unless She's a Man in Japan is in effect for somebody, and it isn't to my knowledge.

Like. I'm not ruling out the Replicas being made of plastic, and when Xigbar and Saix say "puppet" and "doll" they mean it. Literally?

I mean. Anyway, I think Xion counts as trans regardless of the actual physiology involved.

Historically, and medically, assigning gender at birth can lead to some fucked up shit, because about 1% of the population has what might be considered ambiguous genitalia. Where, basically, doctors can't tell whether a newborn has a very tiny penis or a very big clitoris. So they "fix" it. Just to put something down on the birth certificate.

Anyway, in regards to authorial intent, I would personally doubt, say, Sora is meant to be read as trans. But this is fanfiction - we can do whatever we want. That we have no knowledge of anyone's genitalia simply means that we don't have to do a hard retcon if we want a character to be trans.
