Turns out, you can use hand grenades in the shooting gallery game in the Nuka-Game. While it possibly goes against the spirit of it, it's doubtlessly effective.

Speaking of the Nuka-Cade, i'm surprised to see that Mini Nukes are one of the prizes.

Pfft, screw power armor. My guy can withstand direct hits from a Fat Man wearing only heavy leather armor, road leathers, and a pair of aviators. And this is my unmodded guy.

Let the Pack (the gang I plan on ignoring) get froggy. Vengeance, she'll sort those fools out.

So I just started the game and gotten a short distance in, haven't played a single game in the franchise so far. Anything I absolutely must know before playing any further?

Some things I wish I knew during my first playthrough:

  • The "Melee Bash" button is also your "Throw Grenade" button - press and hold it to ready an equipped explosive, release to throw. And be very careful when pistol-whipping people in close combat.
  • There's an unexplained "pop out of cover" mechanic - if you get close to something and see your gun turn sideways, pressing the "aim down sights" button will make your character lean out of cover, and releasing makes them hunker down again.
  • When you step out of a suit of power armor, NPCs - including enemies! - can walk off in it unless you also remove its fusion core.
  • Merchants will pay as much for a fusion core with 1% energy remaining as they would for one with 100% energy remaining
  • If you're sneaky, you can pickpocket a power-armored enemy's fusion core to force them to exit the suit. Even if you're not, you can target their fusion core in VATS, and if you deal enough damage you'll trigger a meltdown - burn a critical hit for a guaranteed hit and heavy damage.
  • If you find yourself needing some crops for Sanctuary, the people at Abernathy Farm to the southwest won't mind if you borrow some of their Tatos
  • To discourage raids on your settlements, make sure that their Defense value is equal to or greater than their combined Food and Water supply values.
  • If you're lacking for adhesive, you can turn some Mutfruit, Corn and Tatos into Vegetable Starch at a cooking station. Consequently, these are going to be your three favorite crops.
  • If you're lacking for oil, you can make Cutting Fluid out of some acid, bone, purified water and steel at a chemistry station.
  • The game classifies tobacco products and Pre-War Money as "Junk" when you're dumping stuff off at a workbench. If so, it's junk you'd probably rather sell to a merchant than scrap for cloth.
  • Quicksave all the time, this is a buggy and crashy game. You can even quicksave in the middle of conversations, in case one of the responses turns out differently than you expected.
  • You can put a conversation on hold by looking away from the other person until the dialogue wheel disappears. This can let you put on Charisma-boosting clothing to ensure you'll pass a Speech check.

Add:

  • While a bit buggy, farming purified water is basically easiest source for caps. Even more if you can convince Bunker Hill guys to pay visit.
  • You'll find yourself often raiding (ex-) hospitals and clinics mid-game. Not for healing item (although that's a nice bonus), but for aluminium.
  • That Deathclaw boss basically serves as skill-check for players, good Fallout 3 veteran will find the boss a bit breeze. New player? I play on Easy, and I got f****d 10 times. Otherwise, other bosses are relatively much easier.
    • You suck on FPS games? Well, too bad, VATS eating the fusion core really fast, hanging on them wouldn't give you any significant advantages and makes you curse when the Powered Armor ejects you from it.

So apparently, there are parts for Automatrons mods that are dropped by robots at Nuka-World.

There's a building on the right you can run into that the deathclaw cant attack you from. I found it necessary when playing on very hard, since that deathclaw can kill you really quickly.

Mutfruit is a 1/1 food rating, so if you're looking to squeeze every last drop out of available space (I ran into that problem when building my perfect settlement) it's a better choice than anything else, which is usually 0.5/1

Nuka-World, take two. After fixing my inconvenient settlement attack problem for good, I met the rest of the raider leaders. The Pack annoyed me because it's hard to have a conversation with an endless dog fight going on in the background, while the Disciples make me wonder whether one of Vance's wannabe vampires went bad somewhere between then and now - seriously, the leader has a blood bath set up in her room.

After playing in the arcade and managing to somehow lodge a basketball just over the net so that I couldn't land a single shot, me and Gage set off for the Galactic Zone, where I quickly encountered the most terrifying enemy in the expansion: a soda-spraying robot. Aside from that, it was fun seeing Vault-Tec being Vault-Tec, though I was disappointed that we didn't get a remix of Vault 106. Did the zone quest, cleared the area, coveted the shiny power armor that is going to be a pain in the ass to unlock, and I was just about to finish things by assigning one of the raider gangs to the area... and I balked. Because dammit, I'm not going to raise any flag that isn't Minutemen blue.

So it turns out that, even before you finish meeting the raider gang leaders, you can pick up the "Open Season" quest from one of the "traders" in the marketplace. It took an hour, a mix of stealth kills from the shadows with a silenced pistol (thank you Deacon!), extremely un-stealthy shootouts with 7.62 rounds and grenades flying everywhere, and long trudges back to Fizztop Grille to dump off the trophies I collected from the gang leaders, but I made Nuka-World raider-free. I probably couldn't have done it without Splattercannon and an Auto-Stim Synth armor piece that dropped from a robot, and I died plenty of times trying to clear out the Operators' HQ, but I got that challenging epic firefight I was looking for. Seriously, I might as well have been playing Call of Duty 4 again, tagging tangos with an AK in a dark, ruined alleyway.

Aaaaaand that fails "The Grand Tour" and all the other Raider quests, and there doesn't seem to be a "you should secure the rest of the park for the ex-slaves" alternative from that gal who gave me the "whack the raider leaders" quest. It also goes without saying that Gage had problems with my decision, so I won't be getting his companion perk in that save file.

Overall, a bit of a hollow victory. I'll probably keep that save as my "in-character" finish, then reload the save I made at the flagpole to play out the situation with less immediate violence. See if there's a more interesting way to dispose of the raider groups, maybe get them spread out across the park so when it's time for the scourging it won't be such a meatgrinder. At the very least I'll get some cheevos.

Can I build one of these at a settlement?

Awesome.

You know one thing I don't like is how few workshops there are. I'd love to have one in the Treehouse or King Cola's Castle or something and make a little home there.

There should be one in every section of the park if only just so you can decorate your own little place to sleep.

Or at the very least the Fizztop Grille. That's just ridiculous.

I'm hoping Elianora will redo Fizztop Grille like she did for the faction housing for the vanilla game. I'm currently waiting on a couple mod updates before I play Nuka-World, so hopefully something will come up while the others update.

In the mean time, I'm working on future characters for my playthroughs of the game, with mods and DLC in mind. I ended up scrapping the Rust Devil type and am really just mentally throwing around ideas right now. I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to make Automatron that uses the Gamma Gun modifications effectively.

Been trying to retake my settlements in the Commonwealth after going muderdeathkill on the raiders.. It won't let me use the workshop at Taffington Boathouse. Says there are still enemies nearby when there aren't. Very annoying.

Make that three. Jamaica Plains is a no-go.

Regarding the supply line to Nuka World. It is possible. It won't show up on your map, but it still works.
