I really really doubt that.

I think it's pretty undeniable that the direction he took with Eren in the last chapter was radically different in several ways than the one that had been indicated before, though.

Eh, I'd say Isayama took it further than he had to or was good for the story, but the pieces were still there.

Eren's character arc

Seriously though, what Isayama is probably trying to say is that Eren between timeskip and chapter 139 was mostly a facade on a character driven insane by his Titan powers.

Eren at least gets off easier than Paul Atreides, another prophet who ended up on a path to genocide due to his powers. Since Eren got to die with a modicum of dignity.

Paul Atreides on the other hand loses the love of his life, gets blinded in an assassination attempt, and wanders the desert for years all alone. When he finally decides to try to do something to stop the genocidal crusade he started by taking on a secret identity as an anonymous preacher and denying his own godhood...he gets stabbed by one of the very priests who worship Paul as a god.

Then there's what happens to his son, Leto II. Compared to that, Paul got off light.

I almost wonder if Isayama started hating Eren at the end and just opted to thrown him under the bus, then throw a few buses on top of that bus.
Heh funny thing is for me it's the exact the opposite Isayama was too attached to Eren and couldn't commit to Eren the villain. Which is also why the alliance member praise and forgive Eren instead of talking trash about him.

I actually don't find that too hard to believe. It took them almost to the very end to be willing to kill Eren, instead of letting go of some false hope that they could talk things out.

The praise was too much, but the actual feelings of sadness are believable to me.

As evil as Eren was, he was also the final product of centuries of oppression. I don't like the one-page turnaround the others make in the last chapter either, but I can totally see them having conflicted feelings about killing him.

That said, I agree there was no need to have that turnaround. Eren's character was in a perfect place, Isayama could just have him both him and Armin be conflicted about it during their last talk.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more the final chapter feels like a misstep to me. I think the story would have been better had it dropped the whole "Eren can see the future" angle after he joined with Ymir, maybe stating that he could see no further than that moment. The final chapter revelation could have been that Eren hoped that the others could stop him.

Did the tail end of this series remind anyone else of the end of Gantz?

Eren has a decent character arc, if you bother to remember he stops experiencing lineal time just after Return to Shinganshina. He climaxes there as a character, and afterwards he just comments on the plot he gets to see.

But, seeing how much of a hard time people in general have grasping non-linear time, I get the complaints.

To make a parallel, it is like the black hole scene in Interstellar; Eren fell in, and can see everything he and others have done and will ever do, but, can't change it, only make sure he plays his part onto it.

Cool comparison to Interstellar. But I think the black hole works because the climax is about a father's love reaching through time and space etc etc, you get to see the magic of the small influence he is able to exert right there for yourself.

He doesn't fall into a black hole and become a passive observer for the rest of the movie... And at the end, you see a small flashback of him setting things in motion that is glossed over instead of being the climactic scene that it is, and when later asked how the fuck anything went down, he says "TARS only knows." [lol]

That's true, but, still, gotta see how it pans out with pipe organ music. tongue

(and, sorry if I came out as pretentious with the nonlineal time coment; it is genuinely something that clicks with me, yet more often than not doesn't click with the average person who didn't read the crap out of a "black holes for teens" book back at age 14).

That's true, but Aren does make sure to say he would have genocided the world even if he could determine his own path. It always would have happened and he couldnt stop it, but that's because he was the kind of person who'd do that and the natural result of his actions. The manga made sure to spell out as much. The only difference here is that he experienced the results of his decision before he was able to make it.

On the Zeke vs Eren front, I do find myself liking Zeke more both as a character and as a "Tragic Villain." As completely dehumanizing and monstrous as his actions were going to go to end the conflict, there was at least an internal logic where you can "get" how he came to those conclusions and ended up the way he did.

Those final chapters completely broke Eren's arc for me, I'm sorry. Eren quite literally found himself with the power to alter fate, and still allowed the course of history to play out as is....because reasons.

Volume 34 of Shingeki will have additional pages not previously included in the final chapter.

Fingers crossed we'll get some smoothing out of the ending and not a gratuituous shot of Birdren flying over the world or something.

So we're getting extra pages of Highschool Caste nice. smile

I believe the final Kimetsu chapter also had some extra pages in the volume but I can't remember if that did improve it.

I hear it did, though I haven't read it myself. But apparently the extra pages in the SNK volume aren't expansions on the last chapter but bonus art and the like, so don't get your hopes up.
