Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan (Manga Discussion)

Speaking of early on stuff and whether it was planned or not, the manga exhibit had some of Isayama's really early storyboards. One of them had it originally that instead of saving Armin from the Santa Titan and getting swallowed it was Krista that Eren saved. And apparently also mentioned in an interview that he hadn't planned on Krista being a major character just serving as an obligatory moe character to lighten things up. But he absolutely hated that and how shallow a character he'd made Krista so Historia was born.

I'll always be fascinated by the version of the story he originally concocted, where some characters were super shallow and everyone was going to die in the end.

Of course, there are a couple major differences between decapitation and cardiac arrest in terms of how you'd go about treating them: 1. CPR cannot be used in the case of decapitation, and 2. Decapitation also results in massive blood loss. Thus, it's not simply a question of reattaching the severed head before permanent brain damage sets in, but also treating the blood loss and restarting the heart. It may be easier to sustain the head artificially like in Futurama than to reattach a severed head to the decapitated body in time to save the patient's life.

Does connecting the severed head to your own heart count?

Remember that hearts do not require to have a nervous connection to the brain to function; otherwise, heart transplants wouldn't work.

For the record, titan shifters have far more leeway in terms of surviving shit than the average human.

Hearts can only keep beating a very short time without electrical impulses from the brain. In the case of a heart transplant, the heart isn't beating when it's transplanted, and must be stimulated to beat with drugs like epinephrine. Truth be told, any heart surgery entails using a machine to circulate your blood so they can stop your heart to allow them to work on it.

I believe we should not get out of sight that this is Titan biology we are supposed to be talking about. As in people who can survive getting their head blown off.

No. Hearts are self-beating, the impulse ORIGINATES IN THE HEART ITSELF. However, without oxygen, of course it cannot keep it up. But, a healthy heart will beat without the CNS telling it to beat. The brain can tell the heart to beat quicker or slower, but that's it. And hormones can do the same, but not as fast.

Remember that, in a transplant, you cannot connect the new heart to the vagus nerve of the patient. I mean, nerves connect specific neurons to specific cells. You can't connect 2 different axons and expect it to work.

And no, heart surgery doesn't REQUIRE a perfusionist. Having one can help, but the procedure can cause severe trauma to heart and brain.

For those who were wondering that Eren looked more feminine this chapter, several people on Reddit have already compared him to Frieda Reiss.

That's more or less interesting to me, especially considering the panel where Eren and Zeke are both shocked at what Grisha said in the basement. It's obvious that Eren at this point resembles Carla, Grisha and even Frieda.

Also, lol at those saying that they don't want to see an Obito-style turnaround for Zeke. Time passes differently in the Paths dimension, and in the time it can take for Eren to slowly turn his brother around, an instant will only pass in the physical world.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but I found it darkly funny comparing the situation when Pieck said that she'd rather trust the friends she fought alongside to help resist Marley in chapter 116 to the situation now.

Colt died for nothing, Porco committed suicide by Titan as a giant "Screw you, I can die better" gesture to Reiner, Reiner is about as useful as a square football, and Magath is about to receive a Thunderspear to the back.

Just like Eren in the Female Titan arc, she made the wrong decision and is now surrounded by dead friends.

I wouldn't call the Levi Squad friends. They were manipulative jailers that would've just as quickly cut Eren's head off as they would apologize for getting aggressive.

Well, that's certainly an interpretation. Not one that Eren or most people would agree with, though.

To be fair, Eren was something very new and very unknown at the time. For all they knew Eren could change and kill their top soldiers and command right then and there.

Of course he didn't but they don't have meta knowledge. And the Levi Squad sadly was opening up right before they all died to a wild Female Titan appearing.

They started out suspicious of Eren, but they warmed up to him eventually. Just in time for their deaths to severely affect him.

The moral of that lesson is don't let others do what you could do yourself.

And no one else cared.

Except for Petra. 'Cause she was a cute girl.

Especially if you can turn into a super strong giant and the others...can't.

An now super strong and fast cannibal giant with an ability to on very rare occasions control other super strong and fast cannibal giants.

Oh and the super strong cannibal giant can now make weapons out of ice.

Damn, translated spoilers out and the plot thickens.

• Eren and Zeke wander through his childhood. Eren mockingly tells Zeke that the "helpless little brother" he wanted doesn't exist, and shows how he's always pursued something without understanding why. How he will "take freedom from anyone that wants to take it from him" — meaning kill them, as he points to the kidnappers he killed. He explains that Grisha tried to steer him away from his violence, but eventually agreed to show him his secrets.
• The Crystal Temple, final version! Freida explains that the Founding Titan must never again be in the hands of a weakling. Eldians must accept their punishment, rather than slaughter the world again. Zeke expresses his admiration for Frieda. Grisha declares his intentions to take the founding titan by force and wipe out the royal family....explaining the true power of the Attack Titan: Precognition via seeing the memories of future holders. Grisha prepares to change.....and then drops the knife, sobbing that he can't kill children.
• Zeke is confused, but then Eren kneels at Grisha's side and begins to berate him for failing his mission. For failing Faye, Dina, and Kruger, and all his dead comrades. He demands that Grisha stand and finish his story. Grisha carries out the slaughter, and then collapses outside the burning chapel. He screams and demands to know if Eren is satisfied now that he's done it.
• Grisha realizes Zeke is there, and embraces him while apologizing for everything. Zeke is stunned, conflicted and then Grisha drops a bombshell: He begs Zeke to STOP EREN.
• Zeke breaks the connection, back into the Paths. He states Eren showed Grisha things useful for getting him to set things in motion, manipulating him towards this single point. Eren admits that 4 years ago, he saw this present when he touched Historia's hand at the ceremony. He coldly thanks Zeke for getting him to this point. Zeke tells him that Grisha saw something in the future, and warned him.
• Zeke shouts at Ymir to sterilize the Eldians, and she begins to move back towards the Coordinate. Eren tears free from his chains and lunges towards her.

So...... Eren is the mastermind after all, and being framed in a villainous light drawn in a sinister manner and forcing his father to do things. But Grisha is terrified of whatever Eren intends to do, so much so that he begs Zeke to stop him. Which.....sounds like EITHER WAY everyone is fucked.

As expected. For Freedom everything must be tossed aside.

People are forgetting in this new chapter that if Grisha didn't do this then the entirety of the 104th would likely of died when the second wall was broken. Paradis would of likely been completely doomed as the Warriors would of kept pushing in.

Its horrible but again the whole situation is. And argh Isayama still is teasing us about Eren's big plan is. The only thing said here about it is that Grisha thinks its something horrible.

Eren is the Monster.
