The first part I'm talking entirely about people saying that out of universe. Maybe I could've made that more clear but I assumed the "to us" was enough.

I don't see what difference you think that makes. Yes, I doubt that Eren is actually planning to destroy the world. For the purposes of the story, and how the characters react, that doesn't matter.

Whether Gabi is just trying to kill Eren in (perfectly understandable) revenge, or because of the valid concern that he is a threat to... everyone, that we know that's (probably) not the case, doesn't make the seething hatred any less ridiculous.

I just don't like Gabi because she feels like a dumber Eren except she's from an evil society. And she deliberately ignores everything that could possibly be evidence against the Kool-Aid.

I don't care if she's realistic, she just really bugs me. Not that I wish she'd die or anything, but I do wish she'd grow some semblance of a brain.

She's very very slowly getting better, yes...

I think maybe it's the monthly release that's screwing with me. Tuning in for ten minutes a month makes it hard to really absorb the story. I'll probably do a re-read once the story's finally over to get a new perspective.

[up][up] Up until this last chapter I would've agreed the hate for her is ridiculous but not anymore. She looked like she finally realized Marley's bullshit last chapter when she said there were no devils on the island but then she threw it all away here helping move forward Marley's genocide. I kind of hope this was all just fake memories Eren sent out and she didn't really so I can back to being indifferent about her but probably not.

[up]Except, again, that's not what happening. "Opposing Marley" does not automatically equal "Good", regardless of terrible Marley actually is.

It is entirely possible, perhaps even common, for people who oppose horrible systems to themselves be horrible and dangerous people.

And again, she has no idea what Eren was going to do (nor does anyone). Propaganda or not, I doubt she'd rejoyce if he activated the Rumbling.

Marley as a nation is horrible, and that's not remotely ambiguous. The Marleyan side characters, however, are not so easily defined. They are, as Eren himself admitted, the same as those living within the Walls.

Like in real life, the people on either side are just....people. in particular, the narrative has gone out of its way to show the mainland Eldians as desperate people that have been trapped in a no-win situation.

Both groups of Eldians are desperately fighting to survive, because the rest of humanity has pitted them against each other. The entire Marley arc was about the Warriors struggling with becoming obsolete, and trying to buy enough time to figure out a new plan.

Honestly, I think all the Marleyan side characters dying here would be a bad outcome. My reason is because the players gathered all recognize their country as a dumpster fire and want to change that. They HAVE that potential now, since Magath and Reiner have enough clout to have organized this whole thing.

Right now, they believe Eren is about to destroy world. Eren told Reiner he would keep going until his enemies were destroyed. Zeke sold them out. They have every reason to believe they are making the right choice, because as far as they know, Eren is an omnicidal maniac with his finger on the Button.

I would say what we have right now is a Germany at the end of the war. The old government of Nazis is gone, but they're still fighting because the Red Army is the Red Army is on their doorstep.

EVERYONE at this point us fighting to survive, and hoping the Wall Titans aren't about to go wild. Even Eren's closest friends are having doubts. Everyone is scared and desperate.

As for Gabi, I think her actions were driven by heroism and not revenge. Because Gabi is a dumb kid that has spent her life focused on....well...basically sacrificing herself so that her family and her people will be safe. She didn't fight so hard for glory, she fought so she could inherit her cousin's Titan and share his burdens.

She doesn't look angry this time. She's a scared kid watching her loved ones dying to stop the Yeager bros. So she helps them, because Eren is as far as she knows a monster that will hurt his own family and friends. She's watched him destroy her home, kill her friends, abuse his own friends, and even imprison the Braus family. She's got every reason to think he's about to kill EVERYONE.

Even we, the audience, don't know WTF Eren is really thinking.

Judging by the final audio the Rumbling is confirmed to happen. This pretty much confirms that Eren will survive long enough to at the very least start it. For what reason that it plays into his plan we don't know yet.

Also, it looks like they already picked out Willie's voice actor and they showed an brief screen of the aftermath of Marley getting Grim Remindered. Buildings are in ruins, other buildings are on fire, and the by then late Warhammer titan constructs are still there. So pretty much what we expect but seeing it animated and colored certainly shows the impact and just how much Eren wrecked Marley. This is going to be crazy to see fully animated

My personal theory concerning the Final Audio is that: it's a montage sequence, not an event happening in the present of the finale.

It's time!

  • Zeke catches the head. PATHS TIME. Zeke appears there in chains, because of Karl Fritz binding the royal blood. Eren is capable of moving freely, and reveals he was using Zeke.
  • Zeke and Eren go back through Eren's memories. The Girl appears, and is confirmed as Ymir Fritz.

Not a fan of how quickly PATHS just turned into multi use plot juice. Have a problem? Just PATHS it. Sounds neat though. I really hope Isayama doesn't pull out the Rumbling for an "Everybody Dies" ending. There is nothing more unsatisfying than killing all your characters instead of coming up with an actual conclusion. Finger's crossed.

Anyway the chapter is out and it's pretty interesting.

Scans are out.

  • A quick selection of cuts. Eren seems to be Actually Dead at the moment.
  • Both he and Zeke (in chains) are at the PATHS Place. Ymir is also there, but she's less of a person and more of a robot at this point, simply fulfilling the will of those with royal blood.
  • Zeke confirms they touched successfully "before Eren completely died"; so it's the whole "brain works for a few more minutes after decapitation".
  • There appears to be some unclear time flow; Eren asks about years, Zeke cannot confirm. It seems like this is some indeterminate future?
  • Eren confirms he's not for euthanizing Eldians. Zeke does PATHS and now Eren's in chains. He holds no ill will, thinking Grisha simply brainwashed him. Apparently both of them have the power of the Founder now... or some such.
  • Trip down the memory lane a go! Eren and Zeke watch young Grisha and Carla take care of baby Eren. Zeke claims he will show how Grisha instilled his nationalism into Eren "until you understand".
  • Grisha used his background as a doctor to get close to influential people in the Walls and localize the Founding Titan. Eren suddenly claims that his brainwashing came undone after seeing his father's true colors, but Zeke doesn't let him pull a fast one on him like that.
  • A few more flashbacks - seems Grisha almost got caught by Kenny and Internal Police during his investigation.
  • Grisha finds the HQ of the Reiss Family way before he actually obtains the Founding Titan, to Zeke's confusion. It seems like Grisha got cold feet and decided to return to his new family instead. Zeke is thoroughly shocked at the revelation.
  • Still, he claims that Eren is still just doing what Grisha would want him to do... until the latter mumbles "Zeke, I'm sorry" in his sleep and wakes up... to see Zeke himself.
  • He dismisses him as a dream shortly after. Zeke's moment of hesitation seems to give Eren enough momentum to direct the memories himself. At the very least he recognizes what's ahead.

Well, that was interesting. o_o

Zeke proves why he's got an Intelligence of 11/10, after all. Man now we're left with Eren having to convince Zeke not to pull the Euthanasia trigger. Everyone, including Eren, was betting on him having control of the Coordinate and Zeke being the tool powering it. Nope, instead Zeke has managed to out-maneuver everyone and place himself in position to play God. How long before Eren completely reveals his hand, and we find out what he intended to do?

Very interesting to discover that Grisha found the Royal Family when Eren was a baby, but abandoned his mission. He would have had to fight Uri and not Frieda for it, back then. But it seems he couldn't go forward with it until Frieda was incapable of intervening to stop the destruction of Wall Maria.

[up]We saw a flashback to when Grisha stole the founding titan. He at first attempted to reason with Frieda, begging her and the King of the Walls to intervene and destroy the invading titans. Only going forward with the plan to steal it when he saw that Frieda had no intention of doing so.

[up] Yes, that's....what I was talking about.

Said incident has even more meaning now, thanks to learning that Grisha abandoned his mission for nearly a decade. He spent Eren's childhood living peacefully, and seemingly had no intentions of carrying out his mission. Maybe he didn't even intend to pass on the Attack Titan, until the Warriors came knocking and destroyed his home.

Huh. That's interesting.

Though I find it more interesting that Eren screwed up again. He alienated his friends, got himself backed into a corner, got himself killed, and when push came to shove, he didn't even have a real way to prevent Zeke from controlling things and doing as he pleased. Maybe it was because Zeke touched him instead of the other way around, but still... Eren is still sucky when it comes to actually doing stuff.

Some things never change.

I think you are jumping to conclussions due to preconceptions. You do that fairly often. It loses its charm.

Fair enough.

There's still a lot to see and I haven't read the actual chapter yet.

I just found the idea that for all his mysteriousness and planning, Eren could still come up totally short at the end to be darkly funny.

As for my charm....I don't think I really had that much in the first place. I can admit it.

Now that I think about it considering Eren has full access to Grisha's memories, is it possible he'd already learned some of this and is just letting Zeke think he's running the show?
