Justice Avengers: Discussion

Hey guys. If all goes as planned, I will now be back for realsies, for the forseeable future, barring the energy and time commitment of my upcoming new job. That said, I feel like all of my characters have ground to a halt for one reason or another, and I would like to get all of my intentions and motivations out in the open to clear some of the proverbial gunk from the wheels.

@Gold: I kept trying to move her and Booster into a relationship where they make fun of each other and trade barbs all day while quietly admiring each other for their strengths, but that never really materialized. I don’t know if it looked like Gold dickishly kicking a puppy over and over again, but that’s sure what it felt like.

@Star Lord: For some reason I have the most fun with this character when he is doing anything but being a superhero. He’s a really fun character to play, but he just has so little reason to march into a battlezone filled with more capable and hardy combatants. I might have to switch him out or beef him up or something.

@Harm: I originally conceived of Harm and his mission with the end goal of putting together an Ocean’s 11 type heist that relied on maneuvering, careful planning, and attention to minutia. Then Vandal Savage showed up and went like, “I can literally just give you every single thing you want,” and I floundered for a while trying to plan around that. I guess I just gradually lost my momentum until today, to this very second, I still can’t come up with the two sentences I would need to get Firefly up and moving again.

Point is, sorry for being flaky and inconsistent, and I'll try and learn from my mistakes. For now, I'll probably let those guys sit for a while and start fresh with a cosmic character, which is probably going to be Beta Ray Bill, then maybe get in on the new New York day with the Tin/Magnus/Lead power trio having adventures and maybe joining the JA.

I saw what you were goin' for with Booster. Hopefully we'll be able to move there in the future.

Your issues with Star-Lord really feels like my failings as a GM to not get him/you more involved. I'll definitely work on making sure everyone has a thing going on in the future.

I don't know what you have planned for the next game day, but I have a quick-and-dirty solution. Peter got marooned on Earth for accidentally sitting on a Kronan ambassador—giant rock monster people—so I was thinking at some point that they could send a handful of assassins to ensure Peter appreciates the depths of his dishonor. Maybe they even paid off the relevant officials to get him stranded on a planet with comparatively low tech base. Point is, in the wee hours of the morning of the next game day, it might be cool to have these assassins—which could be more rock people, or bounty hunters, or whatever you think would be coolest— attack Peter in his motel room. In the process, they would disturb the stash of ill-gotten dollars Peter secured from that Star Sapphire battle way back when, and when the JA show up on the scene, Peter would be caught red-handed. Either he has to deny the money is his or he gets caught and put on a work-release program, it changes the dynamic of Peter's situation in order to make him more active.

Mercury is also a lot of fun to play, but way back when I was paranoid about abusing having six characters, I vowed not to control more than two of the Metal Men at once. And Mercury already had a really great character arc thanks to you and Mary, so I wanted to spread the love to some of the others.

But we'll see. Mercury setting up the Heroes 4 Hire detective agency would be a lot of fun to play, and god knows Mary needs some lightness after everything she's been through lately.

OK, so what are we going for with the emotional spectrum (and is it linked to the infinity gems)? Some people have started signing up as Lanterns already but you talked about this a lot while I was asleep so, Liz, can we just get a final agreement?

Emotional Spectrum based on ambiguity theorem of emotion with Demo providing further exploration, but not yet set in stone. How they connect with Infinity Stone not yet ironed out.

Oh, speaking of Jump City, I guess I should start catching up on that.

I should've known that this would be the event that gets the discussion thread back to multiple pages in a single night. Lucky, had I been awake, I might have reminded you of how, years ago, you expressed an interest in Krypto the Superdog. Still, Space Pirate Cyclops is fine too. Up to you, mate.

As for the emotional spectrum, I decided to attempt a rich blend of all three of my ideas, with some slight inspiration from the interpretations of GoA and Demovere. I ditched the Infinity Stones for now, and simply centred each one on mastering a different set of emotions, whether that be mastering and controlling them, or being ruled by them entirely.

• The Scarlet Light: First discovered by the Five Inversions upon their crucifixes in the forgotten zone, this light represents awareness and examination in all things. In the hands of those with good intentions, it becomes the light of Vigilance and Curiosity, enabling explorers to venture into the unknown, and gaining shape based on their curiosity and attraction to anything. However, in the grip of Atrocitus, it was dubbed the light of Rage, and drove its bearers to lash out at whatever they find that Disgusts them, and to recklessly seek out enemies to destroy. This light is in direct opposition to the Violet light, and is both vulnerable to it, and more capable of harming it.
• The Orange Light: First utilised by the Controllers, the men of Maltus that sought a means of pacifying creation, this light only found its way to one wielder. It comprises emotions that relate to an event occurring, and in the hands of Larfleeze, it was twisted into the light of Ecstasy, fuelled both by the Joy he gains by indulging his base desires- in his case, his innate avarice -and by the Frustration he feels when those pleasures are taken away. This light is in direct opposition to the Blue light, and is both vulnerable to it, and more capable of harming it.
• The Yellow Light: Discovered through the experiments of the Weaponers of Qward, this light is centred around appraising the self. Potentially, this could have been fuelled by Shame and Remorse, and a desire to set things right. Instead, the Scions of Sinestro have corrupted it into the light of Pride. The Arrogance of its wielders knows no bounds, and they have set out to spread terror and destruction until reality is forged into one that abides by their rules. This light is in direct opposition to the Green light, and is both vulnerable to it, and more capable of harming it.
• The Green Light: Put to use by the Maltusian-born Guardians of the Universe, this is the light that appraises the past and future, to make best use of the present. In the wrong hands, it could have been used in the service of Fear and Paranoia. Instead, the Green Lantern Corps has dubbed it the light of Willpower, fueled by Courage and Hope to put the universe to rights. This light is in direct opposition to the Yellow light, and is both vulnerable to it, and more capable of harming it.
• The Blue Light: First observed by the Watchers around the universe, this is the light of detachment from events and objects. Rather than becoming Indifferent to the universe, Saint Walker and his fellows have chosen the path of Peace. As their ethos goes: let Tranquility into your heart, and help others find the value of Serenity, because no matter what happens, All Will Be Well. This light is in direct opposition to the Orange light, and is both vulnerable to it, and more capable of harming it.
• The Violet Light: First manipulated by the Maltusian women of Zamaron, this light encompasses the cathected emotions, those that mean investing a great deal of emotion into something or someone. Rather than using it in the pursuit of Hatred and Loathing, the Zamarons made it into the light of Love, and intended to bring Affection and Trust to everywhere the light touched. But it seems that even this emotion can be corrupted, and in time, the Star Sapphires have lost their way. This light is in direct opposition to the Scarlet light, and is both vulnerable to it, and more capable of harming it.

• The Indigo Light: A mysterious light, emanating from a stone found stranded in the abyss. The wielders of this light, the Indigo tribe, practice strange arts, and speak a language no one has ever heard before. They claim to be the light of Compassion, but from the way they behave, it seems each member hides something ulterior, and that the group as a whole is governed by some strange, and terrible, intelligence.

I can live with it.

I still think it's odd for emotional energy to be visible or channeled via technology, but whatever.

I prefer to think of it as a Science Fantasy type shtick. Like if lightsabers were generated entirely by the Force.

I'm thinking we need more characters who aren't AS cosmic and grand, you know? Like, we've got Lanterns, we've got a Surfer, we've got fucking Captain Universe and the Sorcerer Supreme.

Still having a lot of trouble choosing.

I implied earlier that Superman was known among the star shapphires as "the star child", as the love of his parents, Jor el and Lara, in saving him from krypton's demise was legendary.(But this is only canon if you guys want.)

I had the idea of wanting to explore a focus on Young Avengers and Young Justice. The cosmic game might be a good place for that.

@Lizardof Aus I didn't even think of putting him in space, that's genius. I figured I'd just wait for Superman to become a regular character and have him run around in his city.

Now I'm stuck between Krypto and Space Pirate Cyclops. Both excellent choices.

Grrr, I shall have to think on this. If anyone feels like swaying my decision, feel free to let me know what you think.

Ive been a bit obsessed with Youbg Avengers and Young Justice, especially the former. I'm thinking a team of spacefaring youth heroes around 16-18 is something I'd like to show.

Something I always thought would be neat when we made it to a cosmic game would be to have the "hub" area be a planet from one universe orbited by a space station from another.

Also, I'm going to be writing my sign-up under the impression that all of our adventures take place in the Milky Way galaxy, and that traveling from one galaxy to another is really hard/takes a really long time.

@Lizard: Perfect setup for the Lights, man. Actual emotions adapted to the canon Lantern Corps seamlessly.

Oh, and FL, don't worry about the Game Day. I imagine that this whole investigation takes place on some later day, so it'll carry over when the clock rolls on.

@Saturn: Karolina, aka as Lucy in the Sky (with Diamonds? ) gets my vote, if it matters.

And no, not every character has to be Earth-shatteringly powerful. It's just that many of us have longed to use Superman/Green Lantern level characters for a while now but couldn't due to the Power Cap. Personally, I'm looking for to a few truly ground-smashing battles. LOOK OUT THANOS!!

Any character can work as long as you're creative about their weaknesses. For example, my Captain Marvel is made of two cripples.

Okay cool.

Also - if you haven't already, post some interview questions for Green Arrow! I'm really excited about both the interview and this new Cosmic spinoff so good JA vibe going on right now.
