@nrjxll I don't know about Damian in particular, but due to how DC/Marvel works, and the fact that who the "creator" is in this case change to be a different person in a matter of years or even months, it's very easy for a scrappy to be Rescued from the Scrappy Heap or a liked or base-breaking character to be thrown into it.
Generally speaking , i think most audience reactions tropes aren't going to apply to a character's entire history , except if said character had a very short history.
So for this medium specifically, i'd say "character X started as a Creator's Pet but later grew out of it" or "Character X was writer's Y Creator's Pet during his run" can applies (Assuming, obviously that character X did fit the other criteria during the time they are said to be a Creator's Pet.)
