Spectacular Speculation: What Spider-man season 3 might have been

Unfortunately for the entire human race The Spectacular Spider Man was cancelled at the end of its second season. We never got to see a third season, but we can speculate what it would have contained.

Like the first two seasons it almost certainly would have been broken up into four arcs. Three that were three episodes long and one that's four episodes long. Each arc would focus on a theme and be named after a subject in school. Eg. Mathematics.

We know that both Scorpion and Hobgoblin were slated for appearances so lets start there. In the comics the Hobgoblin got his start after finding some of Osborn's tech lying around and using it in much the same way Norman did. His ultimate goal was to become top dog in New York's criminal underworld, which in this continuity, means he wants to be the new Big Man.

Scorpion is a bit harder. In most other continuities he was created by a Dr. Stillwell with the backing of old JJ. Now we all know JJ doesn't like Spidey too much, but turning a human being into a monster is going a bit too far for JJ as we've seen him up till this point so I'm going to try to work up to that in an arc I'm calling, Journalism 101.

Lets assume that JJ gets contacted by Dr. Spencer Smythe, who wants funding to build some robots and turns to JJ for the cash. This could be set up in an earlier arc but the payoff won't come till the first part of Journalism 101 when Smythe sends the robot, the first Spider Slayer, out to capture Spider-man so that JJ can unmask him for ratings. Building a robot is not nearly as ethically questionable as re-writing someone's DNA, plus this would introduce the Spider Slayers and Spencer and Alister Smythe all at once. Obviously this plot won't work so in the second part of the arc JJ will hire Gargan to uncover Spidey's identity in good old fashioned Private Eye style, most likely in an episode where the central focus is on Spidey fighting someone else.

Finally we introduce Stillwell, who is working on some sort of super soldier project or genetic research or something. With JJ's backing and Gargan volunteering to be a test subject Stillwell tries to make progress the "legal way" but is having a rough time of it. At this point Stillwell will either decide to screw ethics and go full on mad scientist or, if that would be out of character for him, ask Warren Miles for help. Either way experiments are done to Gargan and he ends up in the scorpion suit ready to take out Spider-man. Obviously he goes crazy and turns on JJ and Stilwell. In this scenario JJ doesn't have to KNOWINGLY be involved in any illegal activities, as he assumed Stillwell wasn't going to cross the line. Stillwell could either be willing to create the Scorpion on his own or Miles could pressure him into doing it.

Anyway that is one possible arc. If you have suggestions for more arcs or episode ideas, please keep this thread going.
