@Chadderbox: Nothing particularly wrong with the character, though I should clarify something for whenever you feel like expanding his back story, and to keep in mind while playing him. That is, going toe to toe with knives against some monsters and winning is both extremely difficult and unlikely.

And yes, that's even accounting for them being holy-fied, though that helps. Not all monsters are weak against that, specifically those in the "Beast" category.

Since you've specified that he's been a scavenger instead of a bounty hunter up until now, that still works out. (Assuming he's been avoiding major conflict, I mean. That's what most scavengers do.) So I'll go ahead and give Alix the Official Seal of GM Approval for Entry(TM).

Now, being at Fairfax could work, but I'd have to exchange some quick P Ms with you about it.

@Pete: Same general thing to Chadderbox about the knives would also apply to Samuel's sword. It being a sword instead of knives but not holy-fied would even him out more though. (As in, he'd probably do better against beasts, but worse against demons and most undead.) Also, I'd want to know what kind of sword it is; that actually makes a big difference in terms of how fast it is, how hard it hits, and how effective it would be in tight-spaces.

Also, to clarify the "money" is meant to be how much he would have on him when he joins.

Hmm, either I'm terribly mistaken/confused or there seems to be two types of falchion. A short, wide one with a curved end a lot like a machete, and a longer, thinner, curved one a lot like a scimitar.

Which one did you have in mind? Or could you possibly correct my confusion if that's the case?

Yeah Alix tended to try and avoid combat with larger beasts and stuff during his scavenging days, also PM me about Fairfax whenever you're ready.

Alright, I'll be sending a PM your way shortly. Oh, and forgot to mention: be sure to stop by the first post of discussion and check the 'edit for newcomers' bit, if you haven't already. You'll probably have to wait until the group actually gets to Fairfax, which given the pace and my schedule will probably happen either late tomorrow or the day after. (Real time, not game time.)

But you can go ahead and jump in discussion thread to chat right away.

Okay, well despite my doubts that just one guy with a sword could reliably take on vampires in this setting, (Since they're rarely alone.) there's nothing else I can really say is wrong with the character. Yet, I'm still just unsure about it.

I'm sorry, I'm gonna need some time to think it over. In the meantime, feel free to give him some more stuff. I mean, if he's been exclusively hunting vampires, I'd imagine he'd at least carry some wooden stakes and maybe some holy water on him.

I'll also link you to my TYCMAK:*

vampires, since the knowledge from it is pretty relevant to your character currently. So feel free to edit based on this while I keep mulling it over. Or not, up to you.

My character has a cross that weakens them, and a handgun as well. So, in my opinion, being underequipped is better than being an overequipped Mary Sue/Gary Stu.

I've established that indirect exposure to crosses and crucifixes doesn't do anything to vampires though. He'd have to press it directly against their skin to get any effect, and at that range...

I appreciate the anti-sue thoughts, but there is an extent to which it goes the other direction too: being under-equipped but still highly successful is sueish in its own way. That's basically what's giving me doubts right now.

Don't get me wrong, he could still kill vampires with just a sword. (Decapitation would be the easiest way. Slicing up any other part usually wouldn't do enough damage in enough time.) That's not the entire picture though; like I said, vampires are rarely alone. Sometimes they're the only vampire around, but there's other monsters besides vampires. This is especially true since vampires can command unintelligent monsters.

Hmm, now I'm getting a sneaking suspicion that you're just screwing with me. But I will address this regardless.

Having a car won't really work. Almost all the roads except major highways and freeways are clogged with abandoned vehicles. I meant equipment he could feasibly carry with him. The folding bed would have to be scrapped or be a bedroll/sleeping bag instead. The machine gun would probably have to be a light machine gun, and be specified as to which one/modification of which one.

A homemade knife launcher fits in with the setting, but I'll still need to know roughly what it's made out of and how big it is, how it handles, etc..

is it too late to join coz i have a charater i could water down and borrow from my failed sci-fi AD&D attempt. she's my only main female charater, although definatly the most likely not to die in 10 seconds flat.

•Name: Kintra Seran

•Gender: female

Age: 27

•Appearance: tall, athletic, wears tight fitting stealth gear on missions. has short blonde hair, brown eyes and various scars.

•Personality: she seems to be smart, brave and a bit of a manipulative bitch, but is kind when needed. in my 'verse she enjoyed dropping things on martian police crusiers from orbit.

•Backstory: by coincidence she's a bounty hunter in my 'verse as well. she was once a spy/assasin in the employ of the american goverment. after the apocalypse started the goverment cared much less for other countries so she was put on a retainer until needed. she wasn't needed. once the bounty hunting job started she saw this as an employment oppotunity. so she donned her old gear and set out to join her first monster slaying group.

•Equipment: she prefers a suppresed M16 but also uses a colt 1911 as a sidearm . as for melee she uses twin combat knives to immobilize prey.

•Money: 30$ she may be ex stealth oprative but she's had no job for five years.

•Skills: she's been trained to sneak in, shoot/stab/steal her target then leave and she's very good at it.

when i say 'watered down' i mean she was the self proclaimed Pirate Queen, owned a private army and lived 100 years in the future. she was also not human.

(edit: i've updated her backstory and equipment so it makes sense. and i'd like to thank firock for his help.)

It's not too late to join, but each person who joins at this stage will need an entrance worked out after approval. As for your character, there are a number of problems/things to note.

For starters are some things about her equipment that I would allow, but there would be downsides to keep in mind. Bladed stilettos? I suppose, but they would be basically impossible to run in. (Personally I'd recommend bladed boots/shoes where the blade comes out the front below the toes. Accomplishes basically the same thing without really impeding movement as much.) The M16 with a suppressor is absolutely fine, but hollywood silencers are not in effect, so it wouldn't be the silent fwips that movies and video games do.

Next, her back story doesn't entirely make sense with the setting. Yes, the American government lost most (but not all) interest in working against other nations upon the start of the apocalypse; but that doesn't mean they'd turn away anyone with combat skill. They're still in basically a state of all out war, what with the horrible monsters everywhere; so I don't see why they would fire her because of that. If you could think up some other way for her to be ex-government assassin it could possibly be okay. (Probably something that would've been pre-apocalypse, rather than after.)

If you're looking for sidearms, well... There's tons. If you're asking what's most common? Just about any glock model for 9mm, or the Colt 1911 for .45 caliber. Those are among the most common handguns in the US.

ok yeah drop the stilletos. they were a good idea in her origanal design but now that she's a human living on Earth it's a bit of a problem. she's not fired. the goverment just had no use for someone in the buisiness of obtaining important documents. she probably could have been used to sneak close and take out the more dangerous monsters. but the goverment wouldn't risk losing a top oprative. as for the gun the colt 1911 is fine.

I think there's no point in signatures.

Alright, stilettos gone and Colt added sounds fine. Were you intending to replace the stilettos? (Would be great if you edited the signup for easier future reference, too.)

So now your idea for her back story is that she is still employed by the US government, but they've kept her on retainer until now to have her join privately contracted bounty hunters, for some reason?

Hmm... If I may suggest a little change to that, I might be okay with it. Simply put, she is still on retainer, and got given her stuff back out of goodwill rather than being re-assigned. And she's decided to join a bounty hunter group to keep her occupied in the meantime.

Because otherwise I don't see why the government would tell her to join a bounty hunter group for no reason in particular.

Yes, sorry I saw it earlier I was just thinking it over. Plus I'm pretty busy this week.

Nothing particularly wrong with the character or actual back story at this point, so I'll go ahead and give Kintra Seran the Official Seal of GM Approval for Entry(TM). I would personally like it if you worked on your grammar, (particularly your capitalization) but I probably won't kick you out just over that.

Now, your current idea for how she jumps in may or may not work. The bounty hunter group that consists of the PCs has gone on a grand total of one hunt so far, and are in the middle of a semi-contract right now. For your idea to work, it would've been the nest the group hit yesterday that consisted of one werewolf and a few zombies. (And they didn't even kill the werewolf, it got away.) Or it would've been something the previous bounty hunter group did, but that would mean it happened over two weeks ago.

Anyway, point is I'd like it if you held off on jumping in just yet 'till you're sure on that. In the meantime, feel free to jump in the discussion thread. And please check out the first post in the discussion thread; it contains one last simple rule and some links to more information on the setting.

Well unless the entire forum goes, this thing isn't going anywhere, so I see no need to rush. tongue

Anyway, in all seriousness, like I said it's just a personal thing for me being a slight Grammar Nazi. I'm not going to force people to use better spelling or punctuation or what have you. That is, unless it's so bad that it's causing problems for others to understand what's being said.

Since you're not nearly at that point, you don't have to if you don't want to. But I would appreciate it if you tried at least.
