My apologies if this exists elsewhere, but I didn't see it, and I was hoping to keep it off of the Video Game thread.
So: Fallout fanfics.
I recall getting to read a never-submitted story from a friend about an old nuclear missile that had an AI installed on-board. A cult had sprouted up around the missile and silo complex, but all it wanted to do was be shot off into deep space and rid the Earth of itself. Naturally, the cult didn't really want to do that, as this AI computer had done much to help them prosper in the silo complex, but it longed to at least sort of fulfil its purpose for being, even if it was to harmlessly go kablooie in deep space.
A survivor of a caravan is nursed back to health by these cultists, and the missile AI uses this chance to get an outsider to do its bidding...
I forget the title, though - it wasn't finished, either. But it was definitely interesting.
I read it over a decade ago, but I was reminded of it again after playing Fallout 3 and encountering the Tree Minders in Oasis.
