I have an el-cheapo blunt steel longsword that's pretty terrible. The balance is in the hilt and it's too heavy. That's what I get for spending $180 on a sword. :/

You've drawn his hands backwards.

His left hand should have the back of his hand facing directly up or to his left, with his hand closest to the pommel (you got that part right, assuming he's right-handed). His right hand should be facing directly in the opposite direction.

This positions your strong hand directly underneath the hilt.

He's a lefty.

He's also the guy who thinks fighting with swords backhanded is a marvelous idea.

He is a rather awkward child.

^^ I assume you still have the pieces? You could contact a swordsmith and ask if they could melt down the core materials and make you a new one.
