Indeed. Could be a requel. Wonder if they'd just call it Pirates of the Caribbean with no subtitle at all then.

I say don't break continuity. Current political issues aside, the Scream films were very good at keeping continuity, so my hope is that Pirates can do the same too.

I believe they're using reboot very loosely because there are no further details. Disney is interested in continuing the franchise, but with a new cast. That reads as reboot on a systemic level (regardless of hard or soft reboot) even if we know nothing of the narrative level. The narrative level possibly isn't even defined yet as they've been pushing around a vague reboot since before Dead Men Tell No Tales came out.

I would also point out, as far as the original movie went, Jack Sparrow is only as cool as he is because Johnny Depp made him such. Johnny Depp was constantly getting high on whatever supply and coming up with random nonsense for the character (up to the point of suggesting Sparrow didn't have a nose because a cannon blew it off). This was further exacerbated by exec meetings where Eisner (I think it was Eisner anyway?) would be heard from down the hall screaming about Depp and shouting "HE'S RUINING THE FUCKING FILM!".

As far as the original concepting and pitches for the film goes, Jack Sparrow was a badass mentor figure. Which is so far removed from what anyone would describe him as from the final product. At least in the broad scale of the franchise; I'd say he's still Will's mentor figure in the first movie at least.
