- Out of Character: Mulder claims he wishes he were disabled, as being a completely healthy and capable person means that "you're actually expected to make something of your life — achieve something, earn a raise, wear a necktie"; whereas if you're a disabled person, just surviving would be considered heroic. Which is, of course, a complete contradiction of his character as previously established. Mulder never cared about meeting others' expectations; he had the possibility and skills to go much higher in the FBI, but opted not to. He does his activities as an FBI agent and head of the X-Files out of his fascination for the paranormal and his quest for the truth about his sister, not because of social pressure — quite the opposite in fact; as previously stated by Mulder himself in an earlier episode, doing so negatively affects his reputation, career and social life.
