• Shrug of God: Shane’s sex and gender. Scalzi purposefully wrote the entire novel without a single reference to Shane’s sex and gender. He leaves it up to the reader to project whatever gender onto Shane as they see fit. In keeping with this theme, two versions of the audiobook exist: one narrated by Wil Wheaton, one by Amber Benson. That said, Shane's first name being "Chris" means most readers perceive Shane as male (while "Chris" can be short for the female name "Christine", "Chris" by itself without other context clues is usually taken as masculine).
