• Working Title: The story started out as a 16-page synopsis by Colin Dexter, who used various titles — "Timetable for Murder", "Double Alibi" and "The Jewel That Was Ours". Julian Mitchell then developed it into a screenplay and gave it the name "The Wolvercote Tongue", but when Dexter subsequently turned his synopsis into a novel he used one of his titles, The Jewel That Was Ours.
