Several members of Unity Squad, including Anna "Rogue" Marie, Janet "Wasp" Van Dyne, Jericho "Doctor Voodoo" Drumm, Johnny "Human Torch" Storm, and Emily "Synapse" Guerrero, are trapped in New York City after it is surrounded by a Darkforce Dome. They approach the dome and try to figure out what to do next, with Guerrero sensing pain and confusion in all directions and Van Dyne noting that they were set up and trapped in New York City deliberately. Storm points out that it's pitch black out even though it's the middle of the day. Synapse checks her phone but finds that she has no signal and so cannot get in touch with Pietro "Quicksilver" Maximoff, a member of their team who was outside New York City when the dome fell. She also notes that power is out below them.

Rogue tries to punch through the dome but is repulsed. The team heads up to a rooftop, Rogue carrying Guerrero since Guerrero can't fly, while Storm tries to burn through the dome but also fails. Van Dyne tells the others to stop firing off random attacks, saying they need to figure out what's going on first. Drumm is able to sense that there's mystical energy coming out of the darkness and its source is an unknown man. Before he can find out anything else, though, a large monster attacks. Rogue drops Guerrero and rapidly flies off to punch through the monster before swooping back down to catch her, and as Guerrero tells her to never do that again, Drumm says he's figured out what's going on: the monsters are creatures from the Darkforce Dimension, and the sky has somehow transformed into a conduit between that dimension and the regular world. More monsters drop out of the sky and Rogue, Storm, and Van Dyne go to attack them while Guerrero uses her psychic powers to sense survivors and Drumm consults spirits to get a better idea of the situation.

Storm, Van Dyne, and Rogue fight monsters and protect civilians. At the same time, outside the dome, Maximoff tries and fails to find a way into the dome. Then he gets a message from the Tony Stark AI calling all heroes to defend Washington DC, and he leaves to do so.

A few minutes later, Guerrero tries to block out the overwhelming fear radiating at her from all directions and pinpoint specific people who need help. She identifies two people trapped in a burning building and reaches them, but burning debris blocks the way behind her. She uses her powers to contact Rogue and tell her what's going on. She then jumps out a window with the civilians and Rogue catches them, bringing them all down safely. Van Dyne flies up and says she thinks they're spreading themselves too thin, and when Rogue points out the whole city is being attacked, Van Dyne notes that they won't be able to solve the problem if they scatter. Rogue says she doesn't care about having a larger strategy and the only orders she's giving are to save lives and not get killed. She flies away from a disgruntled Van Dyne, as Storm flies up to them and brags how he absorbed the fire from the burning building.

Rogue flies off and thinks to herself that while she shouldn't have fled just because Van Dyne called her out, she was honest with Van Dyne in that she doesn't think she's a leader that can give orders. She thinks that she doesn't know how to inspire people or get them to work together; someone like Steve Rogers could do those things, she tells herself, but not her. As she mopes, she notices a hole in a nearby bank that looks manmade and flies inside to find the supervillains Herman "The Shocker" Schultz and Elaine "Scorpia" Coll robbing the bank. Schultz laughs that there's no power or security so they can just rob the place without anyone stopping them, but then Rogue reveals her presence and fights them. Coll offers to split the gold with her but she refuses their offer, and Schultz says that Rogue thinks she's better than them and so they should just beat her up.

Schultz attacks but, being unused to his new and more powerful vibro-smashers, accidentally knocks them all through the floor. Monsters then surround them, and the three stand back-to-back as they prepare to fight. At the same time, Storm and Van Dyne continue to fight off monsters while Guerrero struggles to block out the terror all around her. Van Dyne approaches Drumm to ask if he's had any luck, but to her horror she sees that he's been possessed. The possessed Drumm tells Van Dyne to stay out of the way while the Darkforce monsters feed.
