Hawk brings the pages discovered in the bathroom stall door to Sheriff Frank, revealing they are taken from Laura Palmer's diary. The pages reference a dream in which Laura met Annie Blackburn, who warned her that "the good Dale is trapped in the Lodge". Frank contacts Doc Hayward, who recounts the night Cooper returned from his venture into the Black Lodge, revealing that Cooper snuck out of his hospital room to visit a comatose Audrey Horne.

In Buckhorn, South Dakota, Lt. Knox visits the morgue where the headless corpse of Major Briggs is being stored. She discovers that though the body is physically in its 40s, around the age at which Briggs supposedly died several decades earlier. As Knox discusses this discrepancy with Buckhorn authorities, a dark ghostly figure walks by unnoticed.

A reluctant Diane is brought by Gordon and Albert to visit Cooper in prison, in the hopes that she will be able to discern what's wrong with him. Diane speaks to Cooper and is visibly shaken as he asks her about an "unforgettable night" they shared the last time they spoke in person. After this encounter, Diane is insistent to Gordon that the man she just spoke to is not Dale Cooper. Later, Cooper speaks to the prison warden and references the phrase "Mister Strawberry", implicitly blackmailing him with unknown information. The warden releases Cooper and Ray, who depart in the night.

In Las Vegas, Dougie is interviewed by local police about the explosion of his car. Outside he is abruptly attacked by Ike the Spike, now wielding a handgun rather than his traditional ice pick. Cooper's years of FBI training kick in, and he reacts immediately. Aided by a vision of The Arm, Dougie manages to successfully disarm Ike, removing a chunk of flesh from his hand in the process as per The Arm's commands to "twist his arm off".

Back in Twin Peaks, Deputy Andy shows up for a meeting with the owner of the truck driven by Richard Horne in the hit-and-run, but the truck owner is a no-show. At the Great Northern, Ben Horne and Beverly search the premises for the source of the unearthly ringing sound and come close to sharing an intimate moment before Beverly departs. Returning home, Beverly is interrogated by her suspicious and severely ill husband Tom. At the R&R Diner, a man makes a brief commotion searching for someone named "Billy".
