Recap / Broken Princess Chapter IV: The Butchers of Nihonbashi

Go To

Upon seeing the Kabutos, Himiko has a flashback of the 8 meter tall machines smashing the bridge at Nihonbashi and sending several people plummeting to their deaths. They are sleek and somewhat shaped like men, with a single glowing red eye and halos of light that make them look like they have wings. She, Shippeitaro, and Beat were frozen with fear. Banzuiin Chobei, a ronin turned street ruffian, and Mizuno Jurozaemon, a retainer of the Shogun, both of whom repeatedly tried to win her hand in marriage, teamed up and charged the Kabutos with their katanas. They were killed instantly.

Back to reality, Himiko is chomping at the bit to attack them, but Kitty reminds her that he is still working her cuffs. A Public Guardian goes past Nene, who was chatting with them, to ask Kitty what he is doing. He says he is adjusting Himiko's cuffs because they are too tight. The man says it deserves no comfort, causing Kitty to angrily rant that Himiko is a woman, not a thing. Himiko is touched by his words. The Public Guardian aims his pulse rifle at Kitty and calls him a traitor and Bion-lover. He then calls Nene a traitor too, pointing out he lacks a communication device.

Kitty deactivates the cuffs around Himiko's wrists. Then he suddenly claims Nene kidnapped him and forced him to help the terrorists. He throws himself into the Public Guardian's arms while thanking them for saving him. Nene angrily calls him lying scum, but Kitty aims a rifle at him and says he is under arrest. Nene removes his helmet... and Himiko and the Public Guardians all gawk when a beautiful redheaded woman is revealed, having used a voice modulator to sound like a man. Nene acts ditzy and claims that she thought they shooting for a movie. As the Public Guardians say that it ridiculous, Nene sheds her armor. Out of nowhere, her breasts start to expand, straining her tube top. As everyone except Kitty watches bewildered, her breast shrink while releasing a cloud of glitter. The Public Guardians and the machines all become paralyzed when it passes over them. Kitty picks up Himiko, since her ankles are still bound, then he and Nene run away.

Bass stares at the screen in disbelief at what he had just seen. The glitter is an electronic disabling virus the Public Guardians used against Epoch and was invented by thought to be deceased member Yasujiro Hiraga. He asks a female officer if anything still functions and to identify Nene. She says three Kabutos escaped the cloud and Nene has no records. He says to capture the three alive. A frazzled Umpire-1 floats in followed by Alpha Guardian Gehenna Frost. She is a former member of Epoch whom Bass adopted and trained to be Alpha Guardian. Instead of being in uniform, she wears a black ball gown, her hair is wrapped in a towel, and she is barefoot. As Bass gives up the command chair for her, servants continue to work on her manicure and pedicure. He asks what is with the outfit, and she shrugs and says Umpire-1 told her to dress like a lady. They discuss the glitter and speculate that Yasujiro Hiraga is still alive and a traitor. Frost says now that she is here, Bass can do whatever he wants. As he happily leaves, she says the Solomon Gates are in place so capturing those three should be easy.

Kitty and Nene carry Himiko into narrow alleyways, but the three Kabutos start tearing apart buildings to try to reach them. Himiko has a flashback of searching Edo for survivors along with Shippeitaro, Beat, and a machi-bugyo or top city official. Beat shape shifted into a dragon and started flying survivors away. While talking to the official, he was suddenly grabbed by a Kabuto. She tried to attack it with Kusanagi, but the yo-yo bounced off and then it blasted her with fire.

Back to reality, the trio enter an empty store. Nene complains about this poor hiding spot, while Kitty complains that the glitter cloud was supposed to be big enough to take out all the enemies. Nene is accused of playing with the fake breasts, and Nene sheepishly says she's been away from her girlfriend Megumi for so long. Kitty complains about Nene's unprofessional behavior. Nene retorts that Kitty had been drinking. Anyway, Kitty picked the pocket of the Public Guardian he hugged for a key to the cuffs, then says Pheasant is watching them. He removes his helmet and Himiko is astonished to find Kitty is a beautiful woman with long black hair, again using a voice modulator. She tells Nene to scout the outside of the store. Nene complains that Himiko still has the nanobots and is leading the Kabutos to them, referring to Himiko as the Spire. Kitty angrily says to use her name and that they are helping her because it is right. Nene calls her corny.

Kitty unlocks the cuffs. Himiko prostrates herself and thanks them, saying once she finishes her mission, she would like to serve them. Kitty tells her to get up and says their boss would like her to serve the people. Nene returns and says the Solomon Gate is about a block away and apologizes for everything. Kitty checks a mobile device and says White Rabbit is on her way to extract them. She removes her armor to reveal a qipao under it and says three girls should be able to blend in. Himiko reveals she knows that Kitty and Nene are actually effeminate men pretending to be women, comparing them to the onnagata from Kabuki Theatre. Embarrassed, Nene asks how she knows and assures her that he does it only for the pay. He asks Kitty why he does it, but the Kabutos find them and smash the store, making it collapse on them.
