Funny / Our Second Chance Is Called Amphibia

Go To

Anne and her friends get into a lot of shenanigans either by accident or due to their actions:

  • In chapter Cane Crazy, Sasha starts a mocking wave towards Hop Pop’s terrible cooking.
  • In a flashback of the chapter Magic and Swords, Sasha manages to defeat Amelia in a sparring match by tripping her and making her fall on Maggie.
  • In the chapter Flood, Sweat and Tears, the children go through a series of wacky issues of relocation after the basement is flooded. Anne and Sprig can stand each other’s antics every night. Sasha and Amelia fight constantly to get more space to sleep. Jacob and James find it difficult to sleep in their chosen places. And Marcy spends all her time trying to find a way to fix the issue with less-than-stellar results.
  • In the chapter Snail Theft Auto – The Ballad of Reckless Anne, Jacob calls Sasha Pimplezilla due to her severe pimple problem. Marcy tries to make him and the others stop teasing about it failing horrendously:
Marcy: Would you guys knock it off? When you magnify something a few thousand times, of course it ends up looking hideous and disgusting. Hideously and disgustingly beautiful, that is.
    • In the same chapter, Anne is horrified that she has to read a thicker-than-a-brick book detailing Bessie’s story to drive her and is much more horrified when Marcy tells her there are only diagrams.
    • Jacob gets lost looking for wood Loggle needs so he can build him a skateboard and then gets annoyed that Loggle’s notes don’t have any instructions on how to return to the town. He scolds Marcy for adventuring through the forest alone despite knowing how clumsy she is but when Marcy finds out he is doing the same thing he goes: “Touché”. Then both find out none of them know how to return to Wartwood. Much later, when Marcy tells him that she had drawn a map of Wartwood and the farm’s surroundings, he asks for it; however:
Marcy: “Huh, the map is on my bed. Back at the farm.” [Jacob looks at her.] What? I was working on it last night!”
    • Anne, Sprig, Sasha, and Ivy prank Mrs. Croaker in a road rage prompting her to do the same to Sprig and Ivy by wasting their time when they were trying to look for help as their snails become unresponsive.
    • Jacob ironically summons Anne and Sasha riding on their snails when he says: “Do you expect for a miracle to jump in running and get out of this forest?”
    • At the end of the chapter, Hop Pop tells the children that they are ready to drive Bessie now that they have read the book only to be answered with all of them laughing to the point that it disturbs him and prompts him to lock the basement’s door.
  • In the chapter Dating Season, Sasha realizes that her jealousy-filled vengeance didn’t work as she has genuinely been enjoying Ivy’s company and friendship over time instead of just using her to spite Sprig for “stealing Anne away from her”.
    • In the same chapter, both Amelia and Polly snap at Anne, Sasha, Felicia, and Hop Pop for taking the matchmaking too far:
Polly and Amelia: “Enough! This is all your faults!”
    Hop Pop: “Say what?”
Sasha: “Hah, you just delivered the perfect sitcom catchphrase!”
Amelia: “Can it, Sash! You two are the reason we're here marinating and awaiting to be eaten by large monstrous birds, because you had to play matchmaker. Hop Pop, Felicia, not one of you was thinking of Sprig or Ivy’s happiness: you two were just greedy, using something that wasn’t even true in order to push your own personal agenda!”
Hop Pop: “Maybe … a little?”
    Felicia: “It's nuanced.”
Anne: “Nice. Totally innocent for once.”
Sasha: “Amelia is right: you two should be ashamed.”
Polly: “Are you two kidding? Sprig and Ivy went through with this only because of your insane desire to see them together, no matter what, and these dumb magazines!”
  • In the chapter Camping, Jealousy and Gunpowder, Amelia’s start as a “sensei” for Maddie’s sisters find difficulties because the triplets are too energetic to even listen to her.
    • Anne goes through a lot of painful shenanigans trying to prove to the Plantars and James she is great at camping despite all the evidence saying otherwise.
    • Jacob, with Marcy and Maddie’s help, tries to recreate gunpowder for the town’s defense only to have each attempt exploding in his face and diminishing Maddie’s supply of mortars.
  • In chapter Wyndigite, Jacob’s statement that Hop Pop had given them the day off tomorrow is comically erased when the old farmer goes back on his promise for the sake of his crops much to the disappointment of the children.
    • Ironically, Marcy’s inventions that are supposed to make farming easier become additional work when Hop Pop mentions that the family has to take care of them during Grace Rain.
    • Jacob reveals that Amelia had used an inhaler to hide the test solutions much to her anger.
    • Funnily enough, Amelia goes back on her word that it’s wrong to lie and use tricks to escape farming chores and even brings some excuses.
Amelia: “Pass it to me, after you're done,"
Jacob: “Amelia, do you also want to pretend to be sick? Didn't you say it was dishonorable and wrong, just yesterday?"
Amelia: "Yesterday was yesterday, today is another day. And I don't want to catch another cold!"
    • When Jacob complains that the girls are allowed to make loud parties but his experiments are forbidden, it starts a funny argument with James:
James: “Jacob, you were planning to make gunpowder.”
Jacob: “So? I have the ingredients now, and Marcy taught me the process.”
James: “She also told us about the explosions you caused on your first attempts.”//
    • When Anne starts to freak out with the idea of dying after being told about the horrible sickness she and the other children has, Polly corrects her by saying that they will just turn into voracious, killing beasts earning a scold from Ivy and Maddie.
    • During the dramatic conversation between the Plantars, Ivy, Maddie, and the ‘infected’ human children, Polly brings a disturbing fact unnecessarily:
Hop Pop: “Not much. If you have something you want to say, I suggest you to hurry.”
Polly: “And then we’ll burn the tree down with you, to avoid the infection.”
Sprig, Ivy and Maddie: “Polly!” //
    • The human children confess some funny shenanigans that they had kept hidden:
Amelia: “Sasha, before we go, I want to tell you…I’m sorry for misplacing your favorite hairpin, last month.”
Sasha: “That was you? Well, I guess it doesn’t matter anymore.”
James: “I’m the one who always steals the last chocopede,”
Jacob: “I play pranks at school because I like the attention! Most of the things I do is to get attention from others!”//
    • When Ivy asks Maddie where her father got the book about illnesses to find out why Anne and the others hadn’t turned into Wyndigite yet, Ivy finds out seconds later that it came from Swindtog’s store:
James: “Swindtog?! But the books he sells are garbage! He either blatantly copies from other authors, or makes stuff up!”//
    • The human children find out that the reason for the abnormal color of their eyes and tongues it’s because James and Jacob used detergent-like mushrooms in the soup without knowing.
    • Sasha lets out a frustration-filled profanity when she is told that they have to wait 16 hours to call for a blacksmith to unchain them because Jacob ate the key.
  • In the chapter Family Shrub, Hop Pop describes to Anne and her friends some Plantar ancestors getting unenthusiastic, annoyed responses:
Hop Pop: “Oh, yes, Great Aunt Gertrude! She was a masterful dirt tiller. I mean, how cool is that?”
    Anne: “Another farmer, hooray”
Hop Pop: “Oh, and you can't forget second cousin Alfred. He was the king!”
    Everyone: “A king?”
James: “You serious Hop-Pop? A true kingly King? As if the Plantar are secretly a prestigious family of monarchs?”
Hop Pop: “No, James. But he was absolutely the king of single-tiered irrigation systems.”
    Polly: “Our ancestors were boring!”//
    • When Marcy mentions her game player username, Kitty-The-D35tr0y3r, Jacob wonders how was she able to pronounce a name with numbers used as letters and then gets more confused as to how he could understand what she said.
    • Before leaving to buy more glue, Hop Pop orders the kids to not do anything weird or ‘funny’, funnily mentioning Jacob’s last disaster, burning Bessie’s stable again, much to his annoyance.
    • Marcy reveals having discovered one night the secret Plantar’s tunnels due to her clumsiness, earning different reactions from her friends:
    Sasha: “What.”
Jacob: “Marbles! Do you realize what this is?”
James: “Huh, a dark, creepy secret passage hidden behind a fireplace?”
Jacob: “No, James! Marcy, what you’ve found…it’s a dungeon!”
Marcy: “A dungeon? You mean we can now play Creatures and Caverns…in real life?”
Jacob: “Yes! Wait for me! I’m going to get my adventurer kit and weapon!”//
    • Jacob explains the Golden rule of dungeon-exploring to Amelia getting the wrong answer from Marcy:
Jacob: "Marcy, help me, please. Do you remember what the golden rule of dungeon-crawling is?”
Marcy: “Never open a chest before checking if it’s not a disguised Mimic?”
    Jacob: “The other Golden rule.”
Marcy: “Ah, never split the party.”//
    • In a hilarious irony, Jacob forgets to check if he is being followed by the rest of the group as he explains why sticking together in the tunnels is important and finds out later that he has gotten lost.
    • In his curiosity, Sprig pulls a lever recklessly, altering Aunt Gertrude’s room and freaking James out.
    • Polly attacks Emeline’s manners-test statue wasting one of the three tries she, Anne, and Amelia have to pass the test and get out of the room.
    • Amelia passes the manners test for the three of them, if barely, something she explains pretty annoyed.
    • Sprig once again pulls another lever, this time in Great Uncle Skip Plantar’s room, letting Pepo, a giant abominable pumpkin, out.
    • Sprig deceives Pepo with some kind gestures and then puts him back in his cage. He thinks Pepo will understand but James thinks otherwise:
James: “Or it will try to devour you for betraying it in the first place.”//
    • Sprig makes the same mistake again of pulling a lever without thinking when everyone reunites in Polliana’s room, activating the defenses of the place.
    • Polly, Sasha, and Jacob go berserk in Polliana’s training defenses after the simulator is put in level 3.
    • Anne, James, Marcy, and Sprig push the rest of the team out of Polliana’s room when their friends want to try the simulator on a higher level.
    • In Emma’s puzzle-game room, Marcy and Anne are going to start the death round level to get everyone out only for a rock to fall on Marcy’s head, leaving her unconscious.
    • Sprig tries to be encouraging to Anne while she plays the death round with a poor attempt:
Sprig: “Anne, no pressure, but we're going to die.”//
    • Just when Sprig is going to repeat the pulling-lever mistake, Sasha and the others stop him.
    • After being told about the secret family tunnels, Hop Pop goes to give them a try with an unwilling Loggle who is glued to his back.
