* {{Foil}}: The Pawn serves as one for Papyrus. Both the Pawn of Possessiveness and Papyrus are friends with someone, have gone to great lengths to make them feel happy and safe, and use orange as a color of choice. While Papyrus has a healthy set of boundaries and a life outside of Frisk, even understanding that they need time alone, the Pawn of Possessive is controlling, keeping Chara as his prisoner and forcing them to spend time with him constantly, because he has nothing outside of them and cannot exist without them.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: The first instance that something is off with "Asriel" is when Chara jumps off the balcony, "Asriel"'s font changes to the same one used for the Effigy of Ego. This font is used when "Asriel" starts to become more warped due to being ignored.
** Before the fight begins, "Asriel" gradually becomes weaker and weaker as Chara ignores him. The first options seen when Frisk selects ACT are all Flee. Frisk defeats the Pawn of Possessiveness by running away with Chara and refusing to waste anymore time on their enemy.

* AdaptationalHeroism: Chara in the original game was very enigmatic to be properly claimed to be "good" or "evil", even when Asriel claimed they weren't "the greatest person", or even when erasing the world at the end of a genocide route since it can be argued they were corrupted. Chara in this [=AU=] is shown to genuinely care for their adopted family, feel heavy remorse for their actions to the point of begging Mettaton to stop defending them, and eventually grows out of their misanthropy after seeing Frisk is genuinely a good person.

** InteractiveNarrator: Chara seems a bit more inclined to have at least small conversations with Frisk than in canon -- this tendency grows as the story continues on. Napstablook can also hear them, similarly to canon, with Mettaton and Mad Dummy (and presumably any other ghosts) sharing this power.
