The protagonist of ''Rorona'' and Astrid's apprentice, Rorona is tasked with saving her mentor's failing atelier and preventing it from shutting down. While incredibly airheaded, she has [[{{Determinator}} sheer determination]] and a [[AllLovingHero sense of kindness for everyone around her]] to make up for it.

Rorona appears in ''Totori'' as Totori's mentor, and in ''Meruru'', she appears as a supporting character after an incident with a [[FountainOfYouth Potion of Youth]] reverts her to an 8-year-old. In ''Lulua'', a restored Rorona appears as Lulua's mother.
'''[[Characters/AtelierSeries here]]'''.

* AchievementsInIgnorance: A conversation between Astrid and Cordelia refers to her as "dumb in a good way", since she's open-minded and enough of a {{Determinator}} to do things that most people would be skeptical of or intimidated by.
* AgeLift: The NISA English localization of ''Rorona'' changes her from 14 to 17 and retains the three-year age up into ''Totori'' as well... until they completely forget about it in ''Meruru'' and frequently refer to her age in the first game as 14. ''Lulua'''s English version presents her as what it would be if she were 14 in the first game as well.
* AllLovingHero: She's constantly concerned with everyone's well-being and goes out of her way to help people around her. It's because of this that she eventually becomes popular in town and makes herself known as an accomplished alchemist. She also ends up adopting Lulua for no reason other than the fact she was fond of her and wanted to give her a better life.
* AntiMentor: She does her alchemy by instinct, so she can't explain how she does things well at all, and Totori and Piana end up being the only people she ever manages to make teaching headway with. It's to the point where she eventually chooses to have Piana be Lulua's alchemy teacher instead of teaching Lulua alchemy herself, because she knows she can't be a good teacher for her (to wit, Rorona's attempt at teaching Lulua to make a ''basic plain pie'' still results in a very confused and flustered Lulua).
* ApologizesALot: She dislikes imposing on others and tends to apologize profusely, especially in line with her nature as a CuteClumsyGirl.
* BeleagueredAssistant: Technically to Astrid, except that she's more of Astrid's ''slave''.
* BerserkButton: She really won't appreciate it if she finds you picking on her beloved apprentice in front of her in ''Totori''. Even Cordelia and Sterk won't hear the end of it if they so much as shout at Totori while in Rorona's presence.
* BuffySpeak: Her attempts at explaining alchemy often end up this way. She easily resorts to descriptions like "swirl, swirl," and when Totori asks how she'd [[BagOfSharing linked their containers]] over a distance spanning the entire content, Rorona's only explanation is that she took both containers and... "clamp".
* ButNowIMustGo:
** In ''Rorona'''s Normal Ending, Rorona goes off on a journey to find Astrid since Rorona's relationship with the people isn't high enough to get enough jobs for the workshop to turn a profit. Lionela or Tantris can optionally join her.
** At the end of ''Lulua'', [[spoiler:she leaves with Sterk to the Eastern Continent in her ending, having faith that her daughter Lulua will become an incredible alchemist on her own someday.]]
* ChildhoodFriends: With Cordelia and Iksel.
* ComingOfAgeStory: With ''Lulua'' in play, the Arland narrative ends up becoming this for her as she grows from a teenager struggling to keep her master's business afloat into an independent alchemist and mother able to hold her own next to the person originally assigned to protect her.
* TheDitz: She's ''terribly'' airheaded and is often slow to catch onto details, struggling with complicated topics and requiring a whole {{Beat}} to figure things out even when she does.
* DudeMagnet: In ''Rorona'', Tantris is implied to have started feeling affection for her, as are [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer Cordelia and Lionela]]. Starting with ''Totori'', Sterk also begins harboring feelings for her.
* DotingParent: She acts this way towards Totori, and once she actually becomes a mother for real, she wastes no time in absolutely gushing over Lulua every time she sees her.
* EccentricMentor: Thanks to her ditzy nature and her inheriting some techniques from her own EccentricMentor Astrid, she serves as one to Totori, although it doesn't stop Totori from [[HeroWorship admiring her]] anyway.
* EveryoneHasStandards: AllLovingHero as Rorona can be, even she has her limits, and she often expresses exasperation at Astrid's antics. Notably, the child version of Rorona in ''Meruru'' is the only person who can actually make Astrid give up and leave because she's incapable of being cowed by her.
* {{Expy}}: With her game being a ProductionThrowback to ''[[VideoGame/AtelierMarieTheAlchemistOfSalburg Atelier Marie]]'', she follows Marie's lead of being a CuteClumsyGirl and [[TheDitz airhead]] who has to accomplish a simple but high-pressure task. ''Rorona and the Great Alchemist'' lampshades this by [[CreatorsShowWithinAShow casting her as Marie in a play]], which gets Rorona to identify deeply with her, and ''[[VideoGame/NelkeAndTheLegendaryAlchemistsAteliersOfTheNewWorld Nelke]]'' also has Nelke observe the similarities between the two.
* FamedInStory: If you play your cards right in ''Rorona'', she'll be this at the end of the story. This carries over in to the rest of the Arland series, where Rorona is a famous alchemist who is constantly busy with work. However, it's less because of Rorona's skills themselves being legendary and more because she's well-known as someone who's highly capable and good at helping others.
* FamilyOfChoice: With Rorona's own parents being [[ParentalNeglect neglectful in a way that can hardly be called parenting]], Rorona ended up basically having to be raised by her friends and the townspeople, with Astrid having a relationship with her that could best be described as a surrogate sibling with a PromotionToParent. Once she becomes an adult, she adopts Lulua in order to bring her into this pseudo-family, although Rorona works ''much'' harder to be a more present mother for Lulua than her own parents were for her.
* FountainOfYouth: She's reverted to an 8-year-old in ''Meruru'' due to an accident with a Potion of Youth. Since she'd lost most of her memories, she's not aware of the change and is thus even more happy-go-lucky and bold as a child. She also still seems to have some residual memories and an understanding of alchemy, although she's not entirely aware of it.
* GeniusDitz: Remember, ''she's'' the one keeping the workshop in one piece, not Astrid. She manages to become LegendaryInTheSequel in future games... as long as you don't ask her about actual alchemy theory.
* HiddenDepths: Don't let her being ProneToTears and [[DidntThinkThisThrough not good at thinking hard]] fool you: she's actually very self-reliant and dislikes imposing on others, and the only reason she's so quick to ask for help is that she's self-aware (and even [[HeroicSelfDeprecation self-conscious]]) of her own limitations. Sterk complains in ''Totori'' that she's prone to willingly throwing herself into dangerous situations, but she's not a LeeroyJenkins as much as [[PluckyGirl she really is that gutsy]] and wants to push herself harder.
* TheHeart: She's sensitive to others' feelings and will often try to cheer someone up whenever she catches on that they seem down.
* LegendaryInTheSequel: While she has yet to reach Astrid's level of skill and fame (or infamy), she does get to become well-known among the populace in ''Totori'' for her alchemy skills and her penchant for helping people. This continues all the way into ''Lulua''.
* MagneticHero: It's very easy for Rorona to get people into her network and on her side. In ''Rorona'', part of it is because it's hard for people to not feel sympathy for a hardworking girl doing her best in a very bad situation, but the main reason is that she works so hard to help people around her that everyone ends up indebted to her in some way.
* MamaBear: While she still acts as young and childish as ever even as an adult in ''Totori'', she develops a somewhat maternal instinct towards Totori and dotes on her like a mother would a daughter. She retains this aspect when she actually becomes a mother to Lulua.
* MaybeEverAfter: At the end of ''Lulua'', [[spoiler:after she expresses to Sterk that [[BattleCouple she wants to stand alongside him as an equal]], both of them head off together on the Eastern Continent expedition, with her remarking that everything will be fine as long as they're together]].
* MissingMom: Downplayed. Rorona is very busy as an alchemist, so she doesn't have many opportunities to spend time with Lulua and even feels guilt about this. However, she was also aware of this when she adopted Lulua and set up Piana and Chim Dragon to take care of her in her absence, and Lulua is a fairly self-sufficient teenager on her own, so it's undoubtedly an improvement over Lulua being stuck in the orphanage.
* MyGreatestFailure: Taking Sterk with her to fight Suni Sterm and getting him [[TakingTheBullet near-fatally injured on her behalf]] is implied to be this for her. She starts bawling while he's in the hospital, and ''Lulua'' reveals that she still remembers her own fault in letting her guard down and intends to not make the same mistake.
* NeverGrewUp: After getting turned into a kid in ''Meruru'', she's stuck at an 8-year-old age for years due to the potion's effects. It's eventually reversed at the end of the game.
* TheNicknamer: She has a habit of forcibly attaching nicknames to people upon meeting them, and she's disappointed when "Gio" turns out to be too short of a name for her to shorten even further. She drops this habit as an adult.
* ObliviousToLove: Whenever Cordelia tries to evaluate the male members of their party, the implications go clean over Rorona's head, and she herself seems to be dense to other characters showing signs of having feelings for her. Even despite her growing relationship with Sterk in ''Totori'' and after, she doesn't quite seem to understand the full extent of how much affection he's developing for her.
* OhCrap: In ''Rorona'', she's visibly shown making this face every time a battle begins, something that's shown even more prominently with the updated graphics in ''Plus''.
* OlderThanTheyLook: As an adult, she still has a baby face and a short stature to the point she's [[MumLooksLikeASister mistaken for Lulua's sister]] at times. The fact her airheadedness gives her an [[TheIngenue overly childish demeanor]] doesn't really help. However, she ''is'' still an adult and will make sure you know it.
* OldMaid: Astrid's motive for using the Potion of Youth on her (and trying to keep her at 14) is out of the idea that "nobody wants to see her in her thirties", something the developers also allegedly believed. The playerbase disagreed, and Rorona is restored to a proper age in ''Meruru Plus'' and ''Lulua'', although Rorona herself continues to be self-conscious about not being as young anymore.
* PettyChildhoodGrudge: A RunningGag in every game since ''Totori'' has her complain about Sterk charging her 300 cole per outing at the beginning of ''Rorona'' during a time she was financially struggling. Sterk is flabbergasted that she's ''still'' holding this over him after all this time.
* PieInTheFace: Her LimitBreak in ''Rorona Plus'' and her Burst skill in ''[[VideoGame/AtelierReslerianaForgottenAlchemyAndThePolarNightLiberator Resleriana]]''. In the attack's finishing variation, she drops several huge pies on the enemies.
* PluckyGirl: Her Workshop's current poor condition and her alchemy constantly literally blowing up in her face aren't enough to faze her, and she just tries harder every time.
* PrecociousCrush: It's implied that she may have one on Sterk in his ''Rorona'' ending, since his presence flusters her so much that she can't concentrate. It becomes less "precocious" as the series goes on and she starts asserting herself as an adult, wanting to be more on equal terms with him.
* {{Protectorate}}: She's supposed to be this for Sterk, but she tends to forget this and starts inviting him to join her on her outings simply out of sheer habit. After he recovers from the Suni Sterm incident, she's so worried for him that she tells him to stay behind her and not push himself, confusing him because he can't figure out why she would want him there if he can't protect her. Near the end of ''Lulua'', she makes it clear that she would rather he trust her as an ally instead of continuing to see her as someone to be protected.
* SeriesMascot: While not to the same degree as [[VideoGame/AtelierSophieTheAlchemistOfTheMysteriousBook Sophie]] or [[VideoGame/AtelierRyzaEverDarknessAndTheSecretHideout Ryza]], Rorona is one of the go-to characters to represent the franchise due to her game's historical role in establishing the modern series.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: This is implied to be the reason Sterk starts seeing her in a different light in ''Totori'' and after, with her starting to engage with him as an adult and companion rather than as a child.
* SignatureHeadgear: Rorona's feathered hat is her signature character element and carries over into every new outfit she gets throughout the series.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** While she inevitably becomes stronger in the game if you grind her hard enough, her skills in alchemy improve vastly by the end of her game's story, and by the time of the sequels, she's become skilled enough to be a well-known name in and out of Arland.
** During ''Rorona'', she beats Sterk in one-on-one combat during the Annual Festival, and by the time of ''Lulua'', she's able to convince him that she can stand next to him as an equal rather than relying on him to protect her all the time.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Pies, to the point of making one out of a PhilosophersStone for no reason other than the fact she could. ''[[VideoGame/AtelierReslerianaForgottenAlchemyAndThePolarNightLiberator Resleriana]]'' even features her pie-making as a stamina-replenishing mechanic!
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Thanks to some goading from Astrid, she's terrified of ghosts. For this reason, it takes a while for her to warm up to Pamela.
* WingdingEyes: In ''Meruru'', [[https://lparchive.org/Atelier-Arland-Trilogy/Update%2095/118-meruru_1561.jpg she has swirly eyes when at low health in battle]].

The protagonist of ''Totori'', a timid young girl from a fishing village who became Rorona's first student to actually understand her teachings. Finding that having something she was good at gave her confidence, Totori decides to become an adventurer in the hopes of finding her missing mother Gisela.

She reappears in ''Meruru'' as Meruru's mentor and ''Lulua'' as an alchemist working for the Arland Parliament.
------
* BigWhat: Not realizing that Pamela is already a ghost, this is her shocked reaction when Rorona nonchalantly suggests that they use Pamela as a HumanSacrifice needed to access an area in a later part of ''Totori''. Hilariously enough, she reacts with this again when Pamela actually agrees to it, and ''[[RuleOfThree again]]'' when Pamela reveals her ghostly form to her.
* BoringButPractical: Totori's trademark skill is "Duplicate", which makes a [[CloneDegeneration weaker copy]] of an item without subtracting from its use count. Most people would look at that "weaker copy" part first and dismiss it... but not cutting into an item's use count means she can ''spam'' it throughout the fight, and since a Dimension Egg or N/A is still ludicrously powerful even with a 50% power cut, this gives her access to potential game-breaking items for as long as the fight lasts.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Gino, who starts his own journey as an adventurer with her.
* CountryMouse: Alanya is a backwater fishing village, so Totori is relatively sheltered at the beginning of her game and is clearly out of her element when she makes her way to Arland for the first time.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Not nearly as bad as Rorona, but her friends and sister often mention how clumsy she is. Even in-game, she'll randomly trip while running around town every so often.
* CutenessProximity: This is Totori's main source of NotSoAboveItAll behavior, since she has a complete cuteness meltdown over the Chims and can get possessive of them even all the way into adulthood.
* {{Determinator}}: In-universe, Totori is physically the weakest member of the ''Totori'' party... but she also has the highest LP and thus can't be beat when it comes to sheer endurance.
* TheGadfly: She's by far nowhere near Astrid or even Piana's level, but she does show some subtle shades of this in ''Lulua'', tricking Lulua into a SecretTest just because she was curious about her abilities and later teaching her about the message of "one's purpose in life can always change" by... sending her after [[TentacledTerror the Guardian]] to make liquor, just to make the point that making it was hard enough for that to be her purpose in life at one point.
* GiverOfLameNames: She has ''disastrous'' naming sense, and choosing the "Surprise!" option will result in her giving the Chims increasingly ridiculous names while a mortified Rorona looks on. By the time of ''Lulua'', both Chim Dragon and Marudayu are embarrassed about their own names, but it's too late to have Piana change them.
* GrewASpine: She starts off ''Totori'' easily intimidated and flustered, often needing others to give her a push to even do small things, but over the course of the game, she becomes more confident in her alchemy skills and ability to travel around independently.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Due to her timidity, she tends to be a bit hard on herself sometimes when it comes to her alchemy skills at the time of ''Totori'', but she eventually comes to grow out of it.
* HeroWorshipper: [[EccentricMentor She's not blind to Rorona's faults]], but she holds Rorona in very high regard as someone who helped her obtain her current most valuable skill. This admiration for her continues even in the sequels, where Totori has already become an accomplished alchemist by herself.
* HumbleHero: She's praised a lot for her accomplishments throughout her game and its sequels, but she mostly thinks nothing of them, initially due to her timid background but later simply because she's not the type to get on a high horse about anything.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Possibly due to her straightforward countryside upbringing, she has a nasty habit of accidentally trampling on many a sore spot or BerserkButton by complete accident just via plain BrutalHonesty. She starts working on the problem around the time of ''Meruru'' and seems to have mostly cleaned up her act by the time of ''Lulua'', although she occasionally slips up here and there.
* ItsTheJourneyThatCounts: [[spoiler:Despite Totori's original goal being to find her mother, she never actually succeeds at this, since the closest she gets is finding her mother's grave and learning about her (apparent) final actions while Astrid turns out to be the one who found and saved Gisela. Nevertheless, the journey to discover all of this and finish the job Gisela started ends up being rewarding in its own way.]] In ''Lulua'', Totori says that the entire ordeal taught her that one's purpose in life can always change as new things happen.
* KidHero: Of the Arland protagonists, she's the youngest when she first starts off on her alchemy adventure at the age of 13.
* LegendaryInTheSequel: Like Rorona before her, Totori becomes renowned as an adventurer and a skilled alchemist by the time of ''Meruru'' and ''Lulua''. In fact, she seems to have outclassed Rorona in terms of accomplishments on paper, since she starts taking positions on behalf of Arland government entities and works to teach others alchemy.
* LeotardOfPower: A noticeable component of all of her outfits (and also a convenient way to get things that would otherwise be [[PantyShot panty shots]] past [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar ratings boards]]).
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Her relationship with Mimi ends up turning into this by the time of ''Meruru'', and Lulua eventually comments that they're basically a couple at this point.
* TheMentor: Like how Rorona was one to her, she becomes Meruru's personal alchemy teacher in ''Meruru''. Unlike Rorona, she ''is'' a very good teacher by nature and becomes invested in spreading alchemy throughout the world by the time of ''Meruru'' and ''Lulua''.
* ObliviousToLove: Subverted. She's not oblivious to Mimi's feelings for her in the slightest, but she just plays along with Mimi's [[CannotSpitItOut inability to be honest about it]] by ObfuscatingStupidity. The implication is that she's waiting for Mimi to open up about it herself.
* OnlySaneMan: Compared to airheaded Rorona and high-energy [[GenkiGirl Genki Girls]] Meruru and Lulua, she's more level-headed and serene, although [[CutenessProximity she's not without her moments]]. At times, it often leads to her becoming a ButtMonkey.
* SecretTest: She puts one on Lulua, claiming that renewing Rorona's business license will require her to pass a test to fight a monster (in actuality, the renewal was simply a matter of paperwork). Naturally, she has no intention of actually letting Lulua fail, and she and Sterk step in with a BigDamnHeroes when things start going outside the scope of the original plan.
* ShrinkingViolet: She starts off extremely timid and easily dissuaded, and the main reason she's able to start off on her adventure is that by teaching her alchemy, Rorona gave her something she could actually be good at and confident in. Even then, she needs some pushing from Gino and others around her to keep going.
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: [[spoiler:Back when she was very young, after hearing Guid saying her mother died, she cried for a week until she lost all her memories of what happened to her mother. It's to the point she even forgot about her father's original job as a shipwright.]]
* TrueBlueFemininity: The color becomes associated with her in ''Meruru'' and ''Lulua'' due to her outfits largely being blue.
* YouKilledMyFather: [[spoiler:Her motive in taking down Flauschtraut and later Evil Face is to finish her mother's unfinished business that she supposedly died for. While [[DisneyDeath Gisela turns out to be alive anyway]], Totori is at least able to get back at Evil Face for all of the trouble.]]

The protagonist of ''Meruru'' and the princess of the small kingdom of Arls. After Totori arrived in Arls as an alchemist envoy, Meruru was entranced by the potential of alchemy and started neglecting her royal duties to study under her. She and her father strike a deal that she can continue to pursue alchemy if she uses it to develop the kingdom in preparation for a merger with Arland.

Meruru reappears in ''Lulua'' as a traveling adventurer, enjoying her freedom to go from place to place and help people with alchemy.
------
* ActionGirl: She likes getting directly physical, and much of the later part of ''Meruru'' involves her becoming intent on being "the strongest princess ever".
* AllYourPowersCombined: ''Meruru'' is the story of how she comes to understand the meaning of people working together and doing their part to achieve something, which she says in ''Lulua'' to be her own purpose in life. In particular, she considers the Ice Cascade Bomb, which was created through the hopes and dreams of many people and required tons of collaboration to make, to have personal importance to her.
* BadassCape: Her rainbow linen side cape is her most conspicuous feature of her ''Meruru'' design, and she's much more combat-oriented than her two predecessors.
* CoolCrown: She continues wearing her princess crown even into ''Lulua'' despite no longer having the status or title. She presumably seems to think it's cool.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Keina and Lias.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: She lacks the CuteClumsyGirl traits of her predecessors, and in contrast to Rorona and Totori being pressured or needing encouragement to get into their respective roles as alchemists, Meruru is [[JumpedAtTheCall outright enthusiastic]] to the point of throwing aside her position and title for alchemy.
* CutenessProximity: Towards the Homs and Chims, although not to the same obsessive extent as Totori.
* DontCallMeSir: Meruru ''really'' doesn't care for formalities and would just rather be treated as yet another alchemist, so not only does she [[OnlyKnownByHerNickname never use her full name]], she also asks that people just call her "Meruru" instead of "Princess".
* FailedASpotCheck: It's one thing for most people to be unable to tell that "[[PaperThinDisguise Masked G]]" is actually Gio, but it's another entirely for Meruru to be unable to recognize her "Uncle Gio" right in front of her, especially since she'll see things like Masked G disappearing and Gio appearing shortly after while saying almost the exact same things.
* GenkiGirl: Compared to her predecessors, she's constantly bursting with energy and eager to do things right away.
* HatesTheirParent: Well, she hardly ''hates'' Dessier, and their relationship never gets worse than "a bit strained", but she resents his [[FantasyForbiddingFather stance against her alchemy]] to the point of calling him a "poopyhead", and the early parts of the game involve them being on awkward terms as Meruru moves into Totori's atelier because she doesn't want to deal with him. They work things out more as Dessier [[SoProudOfYou acknowledges her efforts]] and Meruru starts taking her royal duties more seriously.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Every major character in the series has their own BGM theme song, but Meruru also has a dedicated one with vocals called "Alchemy Girl Meruru's Song", a song that could come right out of a {{Toku}} hero show. It returns (complete with vocals!) in ''Lulua'' as the background music for her LimitBreak.
* LovingBully: Towards Lias when they were younger, albeit unintentionally.
* MagneticHero: She's one in a different way from Rorona. While Rorona naturally draws others to her just by being [[AllLovingHero so incredibly nice]] to other people that they want to give back, Meruru has the charisma of a princess and is able to rally people to work together and achieve greater things.
* MissingMom: We never see or hear about her mother, and she's mentioned only once in a comment that suggests she's passed away.
* ModestyShorts: She wears bloomers under her skirt, thus allowing her to move around freely without having to worry about being exposed. It's taken to the point that all of her costumes (except her Totori costume, which comes with a leotard) include bloomers underneath.
* ObliviousToLove: Hanna has apparently had feelings for her for a while, but unfortunately, the way Meruru ends up finding out about it is via Hanna getting ridiculously drunk and [[KissingUnderTheInfluence forcefully grabbing and smooching her]]. Meruru is so traumatized that [[BrainBleach she promptly forgets about it the next day]].
* OnlySaneByComparison: Meruru is a RebelliousPrincess and GenkiGirl with a mild LeeroyJenkins streak... but [[CastFullOfCrazy everyone around her seems to be missing a few screws loose in some way]], making her come off as one of the only sensible people in the vicinity (with Totori being the only one who consistently comes off as more level-headed than her). This is mostly a byproduct of her being from a DenserAndWackier game where a lot of the characters who would otherwise be more straight-laced than her were subject to {{Flanderization}}, because when she reappears in ''Lulua'', while she's still reasonably put-together, she's hardly an OnlySaneMan.
* PaperThinDisguise: In ''Lulua'', she picks up a "Masked M" hero identity and is just as unidentifable to everyone around her as "Masked G" was.
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: She's a lovely girl with CutenessProximity, but she's also an alchemist dedicated to improving her kingdom using her ability to synthesize items, and on top of her penchant for just bonking things directly when she wants to, her combat arsenal includes extremely powerful bombs, magical weapons, and a FantasticNuke shaped like a mushroom. Need dragon scales? She'll personally go to kill a dragon herself, no delegating to guards. One of the titles she can earn is "The Strongest Princess".
* PrincessProtagonist: She's a princess who serves as the protagonist of her own game, although it doesn't have as strong of an aura as the trope would usually have because her game is about her working towards the goal of ''losing'' her title, which [[RebelliousPrincess she doesn't even care that much for in the first place]]. "Being a princess" is equated to "a dull life" in her mind because of the SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome that [[RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething she does actually have to be involved in boring administrative work]]. It's only through the course of the game that she comes to embrace the role of being a "princess", not in the sense of literally being nobility but in the sense of being a leader and MagneticHero who helps her country prosper even after she loses her title.
* RebelliousPrincess: Meruru could honestly care less about being a princess and repeatedly runs away from the palace so she can hang out with Totori and learn alchemy from her. Ironically, despite what the trope would usually make you usually imagine, she's only "rebellious" in the sense she dislikes all of the formalities, and she's otherwise a pretty sensible and reasonable person to get along with.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: She's always putting her alchemy to use in bettering her kingdom, and in fact, the reason she doesn't ''want'' to be a royal in the first place is because she'd rather be doing something.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: She ''loves'' mushrooms and is infamous for subjecting people to lectures about them, not only about them as edible products but also about mushroom facts and ecology.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Dessier is concerned about her pursuing alchemy because it means Meruru is starting to become exactly like her deceased aunt Sofra, who met an unfortunate fate trying to seal off Airshatter with alchemy. Fortunately, thanks to everyone's combined efforts, Meruru manages to emerge much more successfully.

[[caption-width-right:300:Lulua in ''Lulua'']]

The protagonist of ''Lulua'', Rorona's adoptive daughter, and a student of alchemy under Piana. Having lived in an orphanage for most of her life, Lulua is only recently coming to find her place in the world by following her mother's legacy. She happens to encounter a mysterious book called the "Alchemyriddle" that only she can read, which gives her unusually specific advice that seems to always help her when she needs it...

----
* AllLovingHero: Something she has in common with her mother. She adores and loves helping pretty much everyone around her, and part of the reason she gets so scared by the idea of losing Stia is because even the idea of not getting to talk to her anymore hurts her.
* AlternateSelf: [[spoiler:The endgame of ''Lulua'' involves her sympathizing with the plight of her AlternateTimeline counterparts who failed to save Stia, getting her to devise a way to save her in ''all'' parallel timelines rather than just her own. The one Lulua visits is distinguished by the fact [[PaletteSwap she has blue clothes]].]]
* BeyondTheImpossible: [[spoiler:Finding a way to save Stia, while impressive, was still a matter of persistence and accumulated knowledge. The part where Lulua ''really'' reaffirms her determination and meaning in being an alchemist is when she decides that's not enough and wants to set things right in ''every'' timeline, something even Rorona thinks might be a little much at first, but eventually comes to fruition in defiance of the conventions Lulua had initially been led to believe.]]
* ChildhoodFriends: With Eva, whom she's known her whole life.
* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: She was described in staff interviews as being deliberately designed in such a way that would contrast her from the previous three protagonists, and indeed, she lacks the CuteClumsyGirl traits Rorona and Totori have but also isn't as in-your-face as Meruru could be. Most noticeably, she sticks out among them for ''not'' starting off with a clear goal or idea about what she wants to do besides vaguely "following her mother", only finding her own reason for doing alchemy through the course of her game.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: Her lack of a strong purpose in life leads to her crushing defeat by the bird Wind Stone at the end of Chapter 7, which prompts her to search for a meaning for her life. In Chapter 10, after she decides her purpose in life is [[DeclarationOfProtection to protect Stia and Arklys at all costs]], she defeats Wind Stone, and the bird recognizes her resolve and strength.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Eva is strongly implied to have romantic feelings for her, and the incident of Refle [[MistakenForGay mistaking her gift as a marriage proposal]] heavily suggests that she would have ''really'' liked it to be true.
* FamilyOfChoice: This is what Rorona functionally gave Lulua by adopting her. She herself is too busy to be with Lulua all the time (something she isn't particularly happy about), but thanks to Rorona's network of connections, Lulua has Piana as her live-in mentor (and Chim Dragon accompanying them as well), Sterk as [[ParentalSubstitute a surrogate father in all but name]], and a whole town of people who will gladly drop anything at a moment's notice if she needs help. [[spoiler:When Rorona and Sterk decide to head off for the Eastern Continent expedition, Rorona still checks in with Lulua to make sure she's okay with the idea of not seeing her mother for what could potentially be years, but it's clear that Lulua will still have tons of people to support her and keep her company.]]
* TheGadfly: She has a penchant for teasing and riling people up for fun.
* GenkiGirl: While not to the same degree as Meruru, she has much more energy than Rorona and Totori and is constantly cheerful.
* HappilyAdopted: Lulua was already in her teens by the time Rorona adopted her, having been an orphan who never knew her biological family. She's thus deeply grateful to Rorona for adopting her and proud to declare herself the daughter of the great alchemist Rorolina Frixell, and makes her affection and admiration for her mother very apparent every time they see each other.
* HeroWorshipper: On top of her existing adoration for her mother, she also fangirls over Totori and Meruru (''especially'' the latter) when she later meets them in person.
* MistakenForGay: In one event, she gives Refle a Komet gem as a gift, not knowing until later that in gem language, a Komet means "I want to be with you forever" and is usually given during marriage proposals. Refle actually considers accepting when she thought Lulua had feelings for her until Lulua clears the whole misunderstanding up.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: She can beat Sterk, a full-grown man, in arm wrestling despite her relatively small and thin build.
* OddNameNormalNickname: While this is par for the course for Atelier protagonists, deriving "Lulua" from "Elmerulia" is somewhat obtuse, since it depends heavily on how the latter is rendered in Japanese[[note]]"Elmerulia" would be written "Erumeruria", from which "ru-ru-a" can be derived[[/note]].
* ObliviousToLove: She seems to be completely unaware of Eva's implied romantic feelings for her.
* PluckyGirl: Though she has her own moments of doubt and weakness, she's overall a gung-ho and lively girl who always pushes forward in the face of a challenge. It also helps that she has the support of her mother's old acquaintances, who are quick to help her get back on her feet whenever she hesitates.
* SecretKeeper: She's the only one whom Ficus ends up allowing to see [[spoiler:his demon form as Evil Face]]. On top of Ficus swearing her to secrecy, she also doesn't have the context to understand its full significance, so from her perspective, it's just an oddity that's not really a big deal.
* SeenItAll: While she's surprised to learn that Pamela's a ghost at first, Lulua isn't the least bit scared of her when she reveals that tidbit to her, explaining that with all the things she's seen so far in her adventures, Pamela being a ghost no longer comes off as that impressive or terrifying to her anymore.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: When Lulua grapples with guilt over having attacked a ghost that was simply just a lonely child, she expresses a desire to change the past to fix things, but Rorona warns her that the only thing it would do is create a branching AlternateTimeline. [[spoiler:Nevertheless, her failure to save Stia gets her to send the Alchemyriddle into the past so that at least another version of her can find some success, and the Lulua who succeeds uses alchemy to manipulate space-time and solidify her success across all timelines.]]
* ShipperOnDeck:
** She's so tickled by the thought of Sterk having affections for her mom that she muses about wanting to get to know him better, as if anticipating the idea of him getting to be her dad.
** Likewise, she tells Totori and Mimi that they pretty much act [[LikeAnOldMarriedCouple like an old married couple together]].
* SoProudOfYou: Lulua is aware that she's inheriting a ''huge'' legacy left behind by her mother, but Rorona makes it clear that she's incredibly proud of her daughter's efforts and cheering her on every step of the way.
* SpinOffspring: While she was adopted as a teenager and thus hadn't actually spent more than a few years with Rorona prior to the opening of the game, making her more similar to any other new character than what one would expect from this trope, she still stands out for being the first official example of an Atelier protagonist's child, let alone one who serves as the protagonist of her own game.
* SuperSpeed: PlayedForLaughs. She suddenly gets a huge comical bump up in speed whenever she gets too excited over something.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Since childhood, she's had a strong love for curry to the same degree Rorona has for pies.
* ObliviousToLove: She seems to have no idea that Eva may be fostering feelings for her, and the implications of Refle offering her a shell in a way that means "eternal bond" go clean over her head even after Piana explains it to her.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: If you actually compare Lulua's alchemy skills at the beginning of her game to how Rorona, Totori, and Meruru were at the beginning of theirs, Lulua's hardly incompetent at alchemy; it's just that it's easy for her to feel things aren't going well when the person she's comparing herself to is one of the most accomplished alchemists in the country. Sterk, who got to personally witness what Rorona was like back when she was struggling to keep herself afloat, is able to encourage Lulua by reminding her that there was a time when her mother was like her once, and that there's nothing indicating Lulua can't eventually become just as good or greater.
* UndyingLoyalty: Very quickly grows to show this toward Stia after meeting her.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Aurel. They bicker a lot throughout their journey, but it's made very clear that they have each other's backs whenever they need it, and there's even a bit of ShipTease in Aurel's dedicated ending.

A knight at the royal palace assigned to monitor Rorona's assignments, as well as a ChildhoodFriend (and ex-lover) of Astrid. Despite having a FaceOfAThug and a reputation for being intimidating, he's in fact a deeply sensitive NiceGuy and is very responsible and loyal.

After the knighthood is abolished between the events of ''Rorona'' and ''Totori'', Sterk is left DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife as he wanders around as a "self-proclaimed knight". He is a recurring character in all four games, trying to find the meaning of being a KnightInShiningArmor in an era where the concept is becoming increasingly outdated.

--------
* AlternateSelf: A ''[[VideoGame/AtelierReslerianaForgottenAlchemyAndThePolarNightLiberator Resleriana]]'' AprilFoolsDay event introduces a character named [[Characters/AtelierReslerianaForgottenAlchemyAndThePolarNightLiberator Eren]] who is heavily implied to be an alternate universe counterpart to Sterk... with a GenderFlip and AgeLift (she's one year ''younger'' than Rorona). Despite the heavily changed backstory, her BodyguardCrush dynamic with her universe's Rorona is basically what the main universe's Sterk and Rorona would be like in a schoolgirl AU setting.
* BadassCape: He wears one in ''Rorona'' and had another in his first concept art for ''Meruru''.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears a black ragged one in ''Totori'' and a uniform white one in ''Meruru'', showing his current job status.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: It's subtly implied in ''Totori'' that part of the reason he's so attached to Rorona is that she's openly fond of him in circumstances where others would be turned off by his FaceOfAThug.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's probably one of the most naturally kind and gentle members of the cast while also being one of the most potentially ''terrifying'' warriors in battle. He's especially protective when it comes to Rorona, to the point that in ''Lulua'', Rorona getting knocked out while both of them are in the party results in him getting [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill a sudden 100 AP and an instant turn out of nowhere]].
* {{BFS}}: His weapon-type of choice is a Scots-style claymore. These usually aren't ''quite'' as ridiculously huge as many examples in other games, but he does still favor weapons that are typically equal to his own height. In ''Totori'', he also uses halberds at times.
* BodyguardCrush: Given later revelations in ''Lulua'', it's implied that he can't admit his own affection for Rorona because he's having a hard time rationalizing the fact he feels it's his job to protect her as a bodyguard with the fact he's come to care about her as a companion he's spent a long time working alongside, not helped by the fact she was a child during the first few years he knew her (which, by his logic, would make it akin to WifeHusbandry). Rorona, for her part, seems to have always wanted to treat him more as a companion than as a bodyguard even since back during the time of ''Rorona'', and it's only after they clear things up when Sterk starts showing more signs of being open towards her.
* BreakoutCharacter: While he was a prominent character even in ''Rorona'', his popularity led to him reappearing in all future Arland games, becoming Rorona's ShipTease partner, and even getting {{Deuteragonist}} billing next to Rorona in the ''[[VideoGame/AtelierReslerianaForgottenAlchemyAndThePolarNightLiberator Resleriana]]'' Arland event. He's also notable for having this level of popularity in a franchise that's usually heavily skewed towards girls, since even people into the series for CuteGirlsDoingCuteThings tend to like him for being likeable and cool, and [[Characters/AtelierDuskSeries Logy]] is often speculated to have been loosely modeled off him.
* TheCameo: Hs ''Meruru'' version appears as a playable character in ''[[VideoGame/WarriorsOrochi Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate]]''.
* CannotSpitItOut:
** The ''Lulua'' artbook describes him as "stubbornly refusing to admit" that he treasures Rorona as deeply as he does, presumably for the reasons described in BodyguardCrush above.
** He wasn't told that Lulua was adopted when he was first introduced to her, and although he was concerned as to how Rorona ended up with a daughter out of nowhere, he was afraid to ask about it out of fear he would be treading on a sensitive matter (presumably he was imagining something [[OneNightStandPregnancy bad]] or [[ChildByRape worse]]). When he finally gets it out, Lulua notices how flustered he is and suspects that he's harboring feelings for Rorona.
* DarkerAndEdgier: He shows up this way in appearance in ''Totori'', although once the player gets to know him, his personality is largely the same. Unused concept art for ''Meruru'' shows an even more advanced version of this before they switched to him wearing a uniform coat to match Esty's.
* DetonationMoon: His specials in ''Meruru'' and ''Lulua'' involve him slicing the moon in half ([[GameplayAndStorySegregation don't ask how that makes sense]]).
* {{Expy}}: He takes after Enderk from ''[[VideoGame/AtelierMarieTheAlchemistOfSalburg Marie]]'', being a serious and [[DifficultButAwesome powerful]] knight who even has [[ActorAllusion the same voice actor]]. Compared to Enderk, though, he's a more prominent character in the overall story, mainly due to also being a {{Deconstruction}} of the KnightInShiningArmor archetype at the same time.
* FaceOfAThug: Much to his chagrin, his face and demeanor frighten people away from him, something that especially causes him problems in ''Totori'' (where he even makes three children cry just by looking at them). Even characters like Rorona and Totori tend to be startled on impulse when they first see him. By ''Meruru'' he simply accepts that this reaction is always going to happen, but he certainly isn't happy about it.
* {{Flanderization}}: ''Meruru'' has him obsessed with knighthood to near-IRejectYourReality levels, [[HotBlooded loudly and dramatically]] proclaiming his dignity and pride as a knight while [[ButtMonkey everyone else around him is really weirded out]]. The in-universe implication is that the possibility of working for a real monarchy again in front of him made him a little too desperate (especially since he doesn't have Rorona there to stop him), but ''Lulua'' gives him a CharacterCheck and goes back to saving it only for a few NotSoAboveItAll moments, making his ''Meruru'' characterization amount to what seems to have been a ''really'' weird phase.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: In his special attack in ''Meruru'' and ''Lulua''.
* HeyYou: He struggles to address people by their names and usually defaults to "you" or indirect references, something Totori calls him out on. By the time of ''Lulua'', he's finally able to use most people's names normally.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: He's the only character to get consistent ShipTease with Rorona throughout the series, and ''Lulua'' ends on a MaybeEverAfter note with her that, even if you tried to read as non-romantically as possible, would still be PlatonicLifePartners at ''minimum''. A ''[[VideoGame/AtelierReslerianaForgottenAlchemyAndThePolarNightLiberator Resleriana]]'' April Fool's AlternateUniverse event even goes as far as pairing Rorona off with a GenderFlip version of him instead of any of the existing girls, with the aura that you're just supposed to take "Sterk being Rorona's partner" as a fact of life.
* KnightInShiningArmor: He'd carried a dream from childhood to be one of these, hence his motivation to join the knighthood in Arland. However, there's little for knights to do with how peaceful things are in Arland, so he's enthusiastic to help Rorona because it's a chance for him to actually use his skills.
* LadyAndKnight: Sterk's character arc across the tetralogy dedicates itself to deconstructing the trope ''hard''. He's attached to the idea of "protecting noble ladies" (not in a romantic way, he just thinks "protecting a woman with a title" is [[WrongGenreSavvy what knights are supposed to do]]) despite the concept of nobility being outdated, and he develops a complex over the idea of the person he's supposed to protect overtaking him in strength. His obsession with being a "protector" results in him taking pride in sustaining a near-fatal injury on Rorona's behalf because it means he'd shielded a girl with his own body. It takes until ''Lulua'' for Rorona to get it through his head that she doesn't see things this way at all, and that what she really wants is to fight [[BattleCouple alongside him as an equal]] rather than being sheltered while he gets himself hurt.
* MaybeEverAfter: At the end of ''Lulua'', [[spoiler:with him having resolved his personal conflicts regarding his relationship with Rorona, both of them head off to the Eastern Continent expedition together, with Rorona explicitly saying she doesn't want to let Sterk go alone]].
* MistakenForPedophile: No, he really doesn't have ''those'' kinds of feelings for Rorona in ''Rorona''; he's portrayed as genuinely annoyed or alarmed whenever he gets teased about it, and he's self-conscious enough that ''[[VideoGame/NelkeAndTheLegendaryAlchemistsAteliersOfTheNewWorld Nelke]]'' depicts him as being on edge as soon as Nelke asks him what kind of relationship they have. The part where things get complicated is that he starts hinging on that territory in ''Totori'' when Rorona [[SheIsAllGrownUp starts acting like a proper adult]] and engaging him like one... but the question of what light he should be seeing her in leaves him unable to admit any kind of affection for her until ''Lulua''.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Somehow, he ''finally'' manages to defeat Gio between the events of ''Meruru'' and ''Lulua'', but the player is never given the details.
* OlderThanTheyLook: He's supposed to be in his late thirties/early forties by the time of ''Meruru'', but he still looks like enough of a PrettyBoy that it'd be easy to believe otherwise. He looks a little more appropriately rugged in ''Lulua'', and his hair is also lighter, but it's hard to work out if it's actually greying hair or just the change in art direction.
* TheOneThatGotAway: In the past, he was in love with Astrid to the point of even writing her a LoveLetter, and in ''Rorona'', he's implied to still be carrying baggage over their relationship fallout, although the specifics aren't clear (Rorona and Esty point out that she's the only one who gets him truly upset, but he's clearly aware of how questionable Astrid's actions are and seems to be struggling with [[LovingAShadow lingering attachment]] rather than actual longing). He's still incensed at the mention of her in ''Totori'', but he seems to have moved on by the time of ''Lulua''.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: "Sterkenburg" tends to be too difficult for people around him to say, so he tells them to just call him "Sterk". He himself seems to prefer the address in general, and he gets irritated when Astrid calls him by the full name to annoy him.
* PerpetualFrowner: Part of the reason his FaceOfAThug scares people is that it's hard to get him to smile with how serious he is. It's intense enough that in ''Meruru'' Totori convinces him to take a "Make You Smile" potion... but his uncomfortable smile is actually considered ''[[UncannyValley more]]'' scary than his default expression.
* ScarsAreForever: Even by the time of ''Lulua'', he still has the scar Suni Sterm left on his back when he [[TakingTheBullet took an attack]] for Rorona back in ''Rorona''. On top of it occasionally flaring up with pain every so often, he's tormented by recurring nightmares of potentially having failed to protect her during that time.
* SecretKeeper: He's one of the few people (if not the only person) who knows that "[[PaperThinDisguise Masked G]]" is Gio. He refuses to say anything about it because it would "affect our national image".
* SinkOrSwimMentor: For Gino in ''Totori'', once he agrees to be his master. He goes as far as performing his LimitBreak on the poor kid when he realizes that Gino's improving in one of their training sessions. However, he also notices when things are getting to the point of severely damaging Gino's confidence and secretly intervenes to pick it up, getting Rorona to comment on him actually being quite a caring master.
* SpeaksFluentAnimal: He has an affinity with his messenger pigeons, and although he claims he can't actually talk to them and simply happens to understand them, Meruru catches him having an abnormally specific conversation with one and suspects otherwise.
* ThrowTheDogABone: After becoming unemployed in ''Totori'' and being made into a ButtMonkey for his knighthood obsession in ''Meruru'', ''Lulua'' makes things better for him by giving him a prominent position in a pseudo-knighthood and better closure on his reason for protecting Rorona.
* TookALevelInBadass: He just gets more and more badass with every installment, to the point of ''slicing the moon'' in his ''Meruru'' [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRdbqOusm78 finisher]]. By the time of ''Lulua'', he eventually ''succeeds'' in defeating Gio, claiming the title of Knight Supreme for himself.
* WhenHeSmiles: When he ''does'' manage to crack a smile, it's nice enough for Totori to comment on it, but forcing him to do so with a potion ends up being such UncannyValley that both Totori and Meruru decide to never do it again.
* WrongGenreSavvy: His biggest problem is that he's obsessed with the storybook image of a KnightInShiningArmor, so he's fixated on doing things like "protecting noble ladies from monsters" and being in an organization called a "knighthood" despite how impractical this is becoming in the current era. He ''does'' still hold to the principles and substance as well; he's just upset that he can't fit the full framework while he's at it.

Rorona's alchemy mentor, a BrilliantButLazy genius whose slacking tendencies force Rorona to take up the mantle of saving the atelier. A NightmareFetishist and [[TheGadfly expert at messing with people]] extraordinaire, she has a bad reputation with people around her. However, she is not without her HiddenDepths and is secretly more invested in Rorona's growth as an alchemist than she pretends to be.

While she is absent in ''Totori'', she returns in ''Meruru'' after having accidentally reverted Rorona to an 8-year-old due to a mishap with a [[FountainOfYouth Potion of Youth]]. Setting up shop in Arls, she helps monitor Meruru's progress as an alchemist while she tries to figure out a way to get Rorona back to normal.
-------
* ADayInTheLimelight: The 3DS version of ''Rorona Plus'' includes a prequel titled "Atelier Astrid", featuring the story of how she put together the Water of Life that would help save Rorona's parents and lead to the creation of Hom.
* BrilliantButLazy: She refuses to do just about anything unless it involves Rorona, even if it's against her pupil's will. However, much of this "laziness" is actually her being a SinkOrSwimMentor and challenging Rorona to see how far she can go on her own.
* ButNowIMustGo: At the end of ''Rorona'', she decides to rebuild her alchemy career elsewhere and departs from Arland, promising to return one day. It's played less dramatically than most instances since she pops back in briefly in ''Rorona Plus'' to check on the time-slipped Totori and Meruru, and while she reunites with a tearful Rorona in the Astrid Ending, ''Totori'' reveals that she ended up leaving ''again'' shortly after, taking Hom with her.
* ConsummateLiar: When it comes to her own feelings, motives, or intentions, she's so fond of messing with people that it gets very difficult to tell how many of her "jokes" are RefugeInAudacity and how many really are just jokes. In general, at least some percentage of what she says is actually true, but some of it is just her putting on a CardCarryingVillain act, partially because [[TheGadfly it's funny]] and partially because [[ThenLetMeBeEvil she knows this is how people will see her anyway]].
* CynicismCatalyst: She lost hope in doing alchemy for the people after seeing what happened to her own master, who wasn't very skilled in alchemy and was treated poorly by the people at the castle. Unable to gain any popularity with the around her, Astrid's master ended up passing away from illness with few people at her deathbed, and in the Japanese version, Astrid says she believes that [[ItsAllMyFault taking up all of her master's work on her behalf had contributed to isolating her from the townspeople]]. Astrid only started recovering her faith in others after seeing how hard Rorona was working.
* DemotedToExtra: For someone who started off with an important role in the Arland narrative, she hasn't been seen much in new Atelier series content since 2015 and was barely even mentioned in ''Lulua''. In-universe, it's understandable she'd be CommutingOnABus given her free-spirited nature and desire to have her disciples be independent, but she's even omitted from games like ''[[VideoGame/NelkeAndTheLegendaryAlchemistsAteliersOfTheNewWorld Nelke]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/AtelierReslerianaForgottenAlchemyAndThePolarNightLiberator Resleriana]]'' despite significantly more minor characters appearing there. While the reason hasn't been directly stated, it's suspected that her penchant for [[CrossesTheLineTwice extreme vulgarity]] and ComedicSociopathy may have become incompatible with the franchise's writing having become TamerAndChaster since the time of the original trilogy (where her behavior was treated as BlackComedy at worst), since the few things she's been given in recent years are either heavily toned down or use indirect wording.
* {{Ephebophile}}: At least part of it is (probably) joking, but she gushes over Rorona's cuteness, puts her in risqué outfits, and declares her to be "hers". In ''Meruru'', she tries to keep Rorona (and in one ending, the other alchemists as well) at age 14, wanting to prevent them from being [[OldMaid Old Maids]].
* EccentricMentor: Calling her "eccentric" would be an understatement, much to Rorona's exasperation.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** As much as she's a {{Troll}}, a lot of her CardCarryingVillain behavior is mostly just exaggerated joking, and she does have enough human decency that there are certain lines she won't cross when it comes down to it. In particular, it's rare she ever actually ''forces'' anyone to do anything, with an incident of QuestionableConsent in her past relationship with Sterk being the only concrete known example. In addition, according to Rorona in ''Meruru'', Astrid never breaks her promises, no matter how shady she seems.
** For all her way of being a SinkOrSwimMentor to Rorona can be a little cruel, she's clearly exasperated at seeing Rorona's parents [[ParentalNeglect care more about going on vacation than they do about their own daughter]]. No matter how lazy Astrid may be on a given day, she at least bothers to actually give a damn about Rorona's well-being.
* {{Flanderization}}:
** If you look only at her characterization in ''Rorona'', Astrid's worst trait was more her apathy than anything else; a lot of what she said or claimed she wanted to do was actually part of a CardCarryingVillain front, and she enjoyed verbally talking about being a NightmareFetishist but rarely did much in practice beyond [[TheGadfly moderately annoying people]]. But in ''Meruru'', whatever she'd said at the end of ''Rorona'' about wanting to turn over a new leaf [[AesopAmnesia seems to have gone out the window]], and she acts [[TookALevelInJerkass significantly more malicious and selfish towards everyone around her]] to the point it seems like she really ''does'' enjoy the idea of experimenting on and tormenting people, all without nearly as many of the HiddenDepths indicating her more genuine intentions and personal troubles.
** In the original ''Rorona'', as much as she made suggestive jokes about Rorona being "cute", the only thing she ever actually did besides that was make Rorona's clothing. ''Meruru'' cranked up her {{Ephebophile}} tendencies to the point it's made clear that she ''would'' have gotten everyone to be fourteen-year-olds forever if she hadn't been pushed to go for a better solution, which carried into ''Rorona Plus'' having her make an even more risqué outfit for Rorona and ''Atelier Questboard'' having her attempt using TimeTravel to assemble a harem of Roronas for herself. She seems to have fallen back into her original ''Rorona'' characterization more recently, but it's hard to tell because her DemotedToExtra situation doesn't provide much to work with.
* TheGadfly: She seems to always know the exact set of words that'll annoy her opponent most at a given moment, and she indulges in irritating everyone (especially Sterk) at every turn. She toes the line between this and a {{Troll}} because she does occasionally do things that come off as genuinely malicious, but for the most part she's just joking.
* TheGhost:
** She never shows up in ''Totori'', but [[spoiler:Gisela mentions "an ill-tempered woman with glasses", confirmed explicitly as being Astrid in ''[[VideoGame/AtelierMeruruTheApprenticeOfArland Meruru]]'', being the one to save her life]].
** She makes no appearance at all in ''Lulua'' and it's not said what she's up to, but according to Rorona, her current outfit somehow showed up ''mysteriously'' on her pillow out of nowhere one morning.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: She's ''really'' not as bad as she pretends she is, but after a [[CynicismCatalyst healthy dose of cynicism]] and [[ThenLetMeBeEvil losing hope that anyone could see her as a good person at this point]], she decided to just embrace the persona so people won't have to know she actually does care.
* LoveLetter: She keeps a letter Sterk had sent her in their youth as blackmail material over him. In the "Atelier Astrid" story in the 3DS version of ''Rorona Plus'', she uses it to get him to help her gather materials, and in ''Rorona'', she uses it to bail Rorona out if she misses the deadline for an assignment (although [[ItOnlyWorksOnce she's only able to use it once]]).
* MoochingMaster: Oh, is she ever. She will not lift a finger if she can get Rorona to do something instead, and if she can bust her chops while she does it, all the better.
* MoralityPet: Rorona is still squarely on the list of people Astrid enjoys being TheGadfly to, but she's also one of the only people Astrid is willing to go out of her way for, even if it gives herself significant trouble or stress. Sterk is implied to be another one as well, [[AmicableExes despite everything]].
* MundaneUtility: She can bend the laws of physics via alchemy to make... a bathing suit for a ghost.
* OldMaid: She's extremely self-conscious about potentially becoming this, and it was her motivation for developing the Potion of Youth. She also believes that Rorona and the alchemists would be this if she doesn't keep them at 14, and getting the ending to ''properly'' restore Rorona to normal at the end of ''Meruru'' requires Meruru to override Astrid's intentions.
* ParentalSubstitute: Given that Rorona's own parents are [[ParentalNeglect rather neglectful]], Astrid ends up filling in a bit in a way that's [[PromotionToParent somewhere between a sibling and parent]] (she's only in her twenties, so she's not ''quite'' at the level of age or maturity someone old enough to be her mom would have, but she's really the only adult Rorona can depend on at home). In particular, part of the reason she creates Hom is to serve as a sibling for Rorona.
* PromotedToPlayable: ''Plus'' makes her recruitable as a very powerful character with a lot of use in the endgame content, although she'll charge you tons of cole for it. The Japanese-only 3DS version of ''Rorona Plus'' includes an additional "Atelier Astrid" side-story set with Astrid as the playable protagonist.
* QuestionableConsent: Back during their youth, Astrid apparently got an unwilling Sterk to let her "enjoy his body" by having him test out a potion. Even now, she still (probably?) jokes about taking advantage of opportunities to "examine" people's bodies thoroughly.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: Much of her "laziness" in mentoring Rorona (and later Totori and Meruru) is actually this: she claims she can't be bothered to do something and gets Rorona to do it on her own, secretly or obliquely intervening only when it's ''really'' necessary. While it's mostly out of her being a TricksterMentor, it's also because she believes that being ''too'' active in doing her own master's work for her had contributed to the failure of her career and reputation, so she's presumably trying to spare Rorona the same fate by making sure she can cultivate all of her own connections for herself.
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: Near the end of ''Rorona'', she suggests that she acts like a CardCarryingVillain because there's no point in acting like a good person after all this time when everyone already distrusts her.
* TricksterMentor: A lot of the time, when she's acting like she's doing something shady, it's actually an indirect way of evaluating one of her pupils' skills or training them. Rorona does catch onto a little of this, but Totori and Meruru eventually get a strong grasp of her secret intentions by the end of ''Meruru''.
* WorkOffTheDebt: Rorona's working for her in the first place because Astrid had cured her parents from a terminal illness, although Astrid apparently intends to keep her for "[[LongerThanLifeSentence three thousand years]]". In the end, Astrid simply gives Rorona the entire workshop anyway.
* YinYangBomb: The finishing variation of her LimitBreak in ''Rorona Plus'': she traps the enemy in an orb of pure darkness, which is then infused with light, tearing it (and the target) apart.

A self-proclaimed retiree who accidentally runs into Rorona and takes an interest in her. In actuality, he's Arland's KingIncognito who likes wandering around and shirking his duties, exasperating Sterk greatly. After the events of ''Rorona'', he sees the monarchy as unnecessary (as well as [[BrilliantButLazy too much of a hassle]]) and dismantles it in favor of a republic. A highly accomplished swordsman, he has a [[PaperThinDisguise secret alternate identity]] named "Masked G".

He reappears in ''Meruru'' as a friend of the Arls royal family, giving Meruru advice and guidance in her efforts to develop her kingdom.
-------
* BrilliantButLazy: He's a very wise politician and competent swordsman, but he likes wandering around too much to actually manage the country, and he ends up ''overhauling Arland's entire system of government'' just because he can't be bothered to actually rule it himself.
* DumbassHasAPoint: Him shirking the kingdom and dismantling the monarchy is absolutely out of laziness, but he's also right in that the reason he can afford to be lazy in the first place is because of how redundant royal titles and nobility had gotten.
* IaijutsuPractitioner: Gio's fighting style with his SwordCane has him draw his blade from its cane sheath, slash the enemy, then immediately put it away, sometimes multiple times consecutively. His nephew Aurel later inherits this style.
* KingIncognito: Other than his subordinates like Sterk and Esty, most people in Arland don't actually know what their king looks like, so he can get away with walking around without people realizing who he is.
* TheLostLenore: Whether he actually harbored romantic feelings for her or not is up in the air, but Gio still deeply laments the loss of Meruru's aunt Sofra and is concerned about the possibility of Meruru going the same way.
* OldMaster: Gio is consistently portrayed as ''the'' biggest badass in all of Arland, and Sterk's motive for chasing after him in ''Meruru'' is to surpass him. In ''Meruru'', he is in his sixties and still kicking the most ass out of the entire cast. Even Sterk, who's strong enough to ''[[DetonationMoon cleave the moon in half]]'', only barely manages to land a strike on him, and it's only by the time of ''Lulua'' when Sterk finally manages to defeat him (which may well simply be due to [[WorfHadTheFlu age finally catching up to him]]).
* PaperThinDisguise: "Masked G" ''only'' changes his appearance by putting on a mask and otherwise wears the same clothes. Somehow, everyone but Sterk (who seems to know simply because he was informed in advance) is fooled, including people who should really know better.
* PassingTheTorch: After Sterk defeats him and claims the title of Knight Supreme from him prior to the events of ''Lulua'', the challenge of reclaiming the title for the Arland family goes to Gio's nephew Aurel, who studied under him and has the same IaijutsuPractitioner style.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure:
** He's the one who agreed to the plan to have Rorona's atelier tested rather than simply going straight to shutting it down, and after getting to know Rorona, the main reason he doesn't simply give an order and end Rorona's ordeal right then and there is because he knows Rorona herself wouldn't consider it to be fair either.
** ''Totori'' reveals that he's partially responsible for Cordelia's current job in the Adventurer's Guild, having been impressed with her talent.
* RichInDollarsPoorInSense: His first appearance has him forget his wallet and try to pay off a 200-cole purchase with an expensive ring, and in ''Meruru'', he mistakes a carrot for being an unusual variety because [[ShelteredAristocrat his idea of "carrots" is based on cooked and sliced ones]], which he then tries to pay for with a whole 100 cole when the proper price should be something like 7-10.
* SuperSpeed: Gio is amazingly fast. Many of his attacks show him performing a FlashStep, and he can even create SpeedEchoes, striking so fast that it looks like the enemy is being attacked by multiple clones of him.
* SwordCane: His weapon of choice is a blade hidden in his cane, a fitting weapon for an OldMaster like him since it can be concealed as an inconspicuous walking aid out of combat. He uses it in the style of an IaijutsuPractitioner, quickly drawing and sheathing his blade with every slash.

An aristocrat who wishes to become a famous adventurer and bring pride to her family name. She starts off on a bad note with Totori when they first meet, but Totori befriending her reveals her to be a DefrostingIceQueen hiding behind her family name to give herself confidence.

She reappears as a supporting character in ''Meruru'' and ''Lulua'', both times in association with Totori.
------
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: She likes Totori for seeing past her haughty front and being genuinely willing to befriend her.
* BodyguardCrush: Inverted. She and Totori started off as fellow adventurers, but after Totori started taking more and more of a prominent role in administration, Mimi became her bodyguard to stick with her.
* BrutalHonesty: Part of the reason she's seen as haughty is that while she doesn't necessarily say things that are ''wrong'', she picks insensitive and blunt ways to say it.
* CannotSpitItOut: Being a natural {{Tsundere}}, she's terrible at being honest to Totori about how she feels about her, and the only time she manages to get anything out is after some prodding from others (including Totori herself).
* CityMouse: In contrast to Totori, she comes from a noble background and is intimately familiar with Arland and the ways of its politics.
* CovertPervert: In ''Meruru'', an incident with Pure Truffles causes her to start spilling out her honest, innermost feelings, getting her to blurt out that she has fantasies of sleeping in the same bed as Totori and taking a bath with her.
* DevotedToYou: By the time of ''Lulua'', almost all of her motives are structured around devotion to Totori as her functional bodyguard.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Following a mishap in ''Meruru'', she develops a grudge against Pure Truffles to the point she gains a reputation as the "Truffle Destroyer" by the time of ''Lulua'' for trying to eliminate all of them from the world. In her case, it's not because of the taste as much as the fact they'd caused her to say all of her deepest feelings, an embarrassment she still hasn't recovered from.
* {{Foil}}: To Cordelia. Both of them are {{tsundere}} aristocrats, yet while Mimi views the title as something important that warrants immediate respect, Cordelia thinks nothing much of it.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: Lulua referring to her as being LikeAnOldMarriedCouple with Totori pretty much cements her as this if she wasn't already.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Mimi knows in her heart that her title actually means nothing, but when she was bullied as a child, her mother told her to remind herself that she's an aristocrat whenever she felt down. She clung to the title fiercely because if she accepted the reality of its worthlessness, then what her mother said would be meaningless.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's not actually as condescending as her haughty demeanor would seem, and she's actually a hard worker who tries to live up to her claims.
* LadyOfWar: She obviously wants to be one and has the aesthetic down in combat. She's still a bit too immature to really pull it off, although she gets closer to it starting from ''Meruru''.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Lulua comments on her and Totori being this way, since they're basically tied at the hip.
* TookALevelInKindness: Combined with her being OlderAndWiser, she's much nicer and friendlier in ''Meruru'' and ''Lulua'', with her main flaw simply being her {{Tsundere}}-fueled inability to be straightforward.
* {{Tsundere}}: Very much so, and ''especially'' when it comes to Totori.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Gino in ''Meruru'' as a fellow adventurer.
* TheVonTropeFamily: As you can see. In contrast to Cordelia, her title comes from being OldMoney.

Arland's Hagel runs the Beefy Weapon Shop, and although he primarily makes weapons and tools for men, he helps Rorona and the other alchemists craft weaponry for their parties. His fixation over his bald head is the same as ever.

In ''Meruru'', he moves operations to Arls with Pamela. While he himself does not appear in ''Lulua'', his apprentice Cole appears in his place at his shop, now renamed "Hagel & Cole".
-------
* DoNotCallMePaul: He doesn't like being called by his last name due to its similarity the word "bald". Rorona settles on "Pops" instead.
* FunnyAfro: In ''Rorona'', he asks Rorona to make him a wig that won't fall off his head, getting her and Astrid to make an afro on top of a ''giant metal helmet'' that's so heavy it can barely even be lifted. Hagel attempts to wear it at the beginning of ''Totori''... but the sight is so surreal that it ends up becoming an in-universe BigLippedAlligatorMoment for Totori.

The Arland incarnation of Pamela emerges from a teddy bear Rorona had found while out gathering. Astrid helps her set up a magical items shop in Arland and later creates a physical body for her to use. In ''Meruru'', she moves her shop to Arls, where she can still be found at the time of ''Lulua''.
-------
* AbhorrentAdmirer: She develops a crush on both Rufus ''and'' Lias in Meruru. The problem is less so about her own personality in theory as much as the fact her planned approaches are "[[TogetherInDeath waiting for Rufus to join her as a ghost]]" and "haunting Lias in his bed".
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Pamela's (un)life is full of strange musings, which are hard for the people around her to make sense of.
* NavelDeepNeckline: Her design in this version has a noticeable plunging neckline, which is played up even more in ''Meruru''.
* SillySpook: She loves messing around with people and especially scaring them as a ghost.

* AchievementsInIgnorance: A conversation between Astrid and Cordelia refers [[Characters/AtelierArlandSeriesMainCharacters Main Characters]] [[labelnote:Click to her as "dumb in a good way", since she's open-minded and enough of a {{Determinator}} to do things that most people would be skeptical of or intimidated by.
* BeleagueredAssistant: Technically to
expand]]Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Lulua, Sterk, Astrid, except that she's more of Astrid's ''slave''.
"clamp".
* ButNowIMustGo:
* TookALevelInBadass:

* FailedASpotCheck: It's one thing for most people to be unable to tell that "[[PaperThinDisguise Masked G]]" is actually
Gio, but it's another entirely for Meruru Mimi, Hagel, Pamela[[/labelnote]]
* Introduced in ''Characters/AtelierRoronaTheAlchemistOfArland'' [[labelnote:Click
to be unable to recognize her "Uncle Gio" right in front of her, especially since she'll see things like Masked G disappearing and Gio appearing shortly after while saying almost the exact same things.

* ShipperOnDeck:

* CannotSpitItOut:

* EveryoneHasStandards:
* {{Flanderization}}:
* TheGhost:

* KingIncognito: Other than his subordinates like Sterk and

* PaperThinDisguise: "Masked G" ''only'' changes his appearance by putting on a mask and otherwise wears the same clothes. Somehow, everyone but Sterk (who seems to know simply because he was informed in advance) is fooled, including people who should really know better.
