Chapter 14: The End…?

The author’s note for this chapter says that it might not come out for a few weeks, since the author’s adding something to better explain the story, and promises that Adventures in St.Gloriana Part 2 is coming out soon. Said chapter was posted on May 21, 2013.

Ian and Hana hear the gunshots, and suspect that Vincent’s dealing with some perverts. The two have “a nice lunch after sex,” when Brent reveals that Vincent’s in the hospital, and only family and Saori are admitted.

Hana asks Ian about Vincent, and Ian says he’s heard from Gage that Vincent’s “a hardened soldier” and the best man in the platoon since the age of six, but he doesn’t know how much is true- I wouldn’t, either, considering how unbelievable his backstory is. Nonna greets Ian, saying that she’s his first play mate. After she leaves, Ian says that it’s “a long story” about how he knows her, but Hana insists “with a grin that would make the devil himself cringe.”

Gage is at a bar, and while he’s vowed to quit drinking for Nyra, he isn’t giving up now.

Saori and Nyra are in Vincent’s hospital room. Nyra insists that Saori leave, since the match ceremony will start and Vincent is going to die. Saori is shocked that Nyra seemingly doesn’t care about her brother, but Nyra says it’s just as hard on her.

Elsewhere, Vincent feels himself floating in a dark void, believing he deserves to go to Hell for abandoning Nyra and Saori, until Saori’s voice reaches to him. Back in reality, Vincent flatlines, and Saori despairs, saying that they promised to grow old together. Finally, the monitor stirs, and Vincent comes to, telling Saori he loves her and promising never to leave again.

Some time later, Saori wakes up, with Vincent still asleep, and Lash and Sonja come over, asking if Vincent had died. Saori explains that he’s fine now, and Lash is pleased, calling Vincent “brother” even if they’re not related.

Of course, the girls from the 4BL program remember that they’re Vincent’s opponents in the tournament, but luckily for them, they won’t face each other until the final match.Unfortunately, the tournament starts tomorrow, leaving the question of whether Vincent will be ready.

Saori has Lash and Sonja over, and when Miho finds the three in the same bed with their underwear on, asks if Saori is “Lesbo.” Saori insists that she’s just giving her friends a place to stay.

Vincent’s released from the hospital in time for the match, and when Brent asks if he’s fine, silently insists that he is.

Then the first match of the tournament starts, and what is possibly the most unbelievable development in this fic happens.

The match went totally in their favor and they won an out standing victory. The second match, the semi-finals, they had a few losses but still won. The final’s was the toughest match. The opponent’s were the 4B3TT3RL1F3 program. The Mark III was the first tank to be taken out because of a sneak attack and it all went down hill from there. The final match ended in defeat.”

Considering that most GuP fics give at least a full chapter (and one much longer than the ones here) to the tank battles, this is almost unthinkable. Granted, the first two matches were probably irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but the third, in which the seemingly unstoppable protagonists actually lose, is Wham Episode material. This, more than any other scene, is the crowning moment in which this fic no longer feels like a GuP fic

Vincent then gets back and sees the captain, who informs him that the Oarai ship was attacked, and they’re at war, another development worthy of a Wham Episode that’s glossed over immediately. Vincent says they’ll get ready, and the captain gives him a week. So much has happened in these last few paragraphs, so how will the story end?

Unfortunately, we\'ll probably never know. As of this writing, it hasn’t been updated in over five years, so it probably never will be. My guess is that the author didn’t know what to do next- when authors don’t write themselves into a corner, they often get stuck shortly after the “real” story starts, and don’t know where to go from there.

While Boys Do Tankary is terrible for the most part, with a nonsensical plot, poor worldbuilding and flat characters, it did have some redeeming features. The author did follow the Fandom Specific Plot of boys in tankery, but he did introduce some of his own twists. Some of the scenes were genuinely funny, as if we were laughing along with the author, rather than at him. As such, this liveblog, my first in a long while, was a fairly short but enjoyable roject.

That’s all for now. I hope to see you again when and if this fic is updated.

Well, that was a rollercoaster. I\'ve read some bad boys und tankery fics in the past, but this one certainly sticks out as one of the worst. Kudos for reading it all though, couldn\'t have been much fun, and I doubt I would\'ve managed the same.

Will you be doing any more boys und tankery live blogs going forward by the way? They provide interesting insights into the common flaws of the \"genre\", and it\'s quite interesting to see an alternative take on someone\'s work, be it in praise or criticism.

Thanks for reading. At times, I wonder if anyone reads liveblogs anymore, so it\'s nice to see a comment on one of mine..

I haven\'t really read many other GuP fics with boys in tankery lately, but I mainly chose this one because it was short, and, as I said before, it did a lot of things other fics wouldn\'t dare consider, such as having little emphasis on technical aspects or battles. Then again, if I find one that might be worth liveblogging, I\'ll go ahead and do one.

Considering how small the girls und panzer fanbase is when it comes to fanfiction, and how much smaller still the number of reviewers there are willing to offer constructive criticism rather than just accept mediocre pieces at a face value, liveblogs like these are a breath of fresh air and one I\'d readily seek out. The boys in tankery genre has never really put out a story I consider truly great; some have come close (Open Warfare is probably the best I\'ve seen thus far), but most are plagued with poor writing, gary stu\'s, and an overreliance on the tanks and technical details. It\'s nice to see someone pointing out the flaws of the stories, rather than just accepting them for what they are.

Plus it aids me in avoiding said flaws when it comes to considering my own projects, but that\'s a story for another day. For now, it\'s good to hear you\'re still open to the idea overall. I remember your reviews on the Gu P fics back in the day, along with Severstal, and when I noticed a distinct lack of them in most the newer ones (after I\'d returned to the genre during Das Finale) I thought you might no longer be interested in the show.

I also enjoyed Open Warfare, particularly the fact that the main character actually undergoes a significant amount of development and doesn\'t just exist to upstage the canon girls.

I don\'t really write Gu P fanfiction much anymore, but that doesn\'t mean I\'ve lost interest entirely- I\'ve been reading a Gu P comedy doujin called Erika Change, in which Erika, rather than Miho, transfers to Oarai.
