TEG 2 Chapter 11: In Which The Characters Actually Have Personalities

Written By: Ebony
POV: Third person
Deaths: The demon supporter(1)

Ebony starts off with an author's note, saying that she will write the next three chapters, which is odd. The previous chapter indicated that she would be doing the next three chapters, including that one. She says she actually listened to the reviews and will include fewer religious themes (although that's far from the only problem with the chapter) and try to convince Thomas to do the same.

As airplanes drop bombs on Boston (although it's unclear which side they are on), Kelvin, a Prayer Warrior, quivers in fear of the bombs and unspecified bad news. But he has a pillar of strength; he prays to God for help against the demons and their supporters.

Dexter, Kelvin's immediate superior, comes in and tells Kelvin that he should give up praying, because God is dead. Kelvin politely reminds him that he is a Prayer Warrior who swore and oath, and that talk like that is demoralizing. Dexter admits that he can't go on believing in God, but Kelvin insists that it's the only way they can win.

Honestly, Dexter is extraordinarily lucky. In most cases, a Prayer Warrior who ordered his subordinate to give up on prayer while admitting that his faith is declining in the middle of a warzone would most likely have been summarily executed.

Dexter is somewhat convinced and asks a favor of Kelvin. One of their spies has gone missing, and Dexter, fearing the worst, wants Kelvin to find him. Kelvin asks why, albeit afraid of getting in trouble for questioning his superiors (although he wasn't at all afraid of lecturing his superior about his crisis of faith), but Dexter doesn't mind answering; the spy is his son. Kelvin sympathizes, having lost a brother to the war, and agrees to help.

The two Payer Warriors get a phone call, and after a moment of just staring at the phone, a "trance" that they believe to be the result of the enemy's evil magic, Dexter picks up and learns that God answered their prayers, and has sent reinforcements.

Kelvin is walking through the ruined streets of Boston, which happens to be his home town, when shots ring out. Diving for cover, Kelvin finds another person, who suspects that he's a demon supporter. Kelvin insists that he's a Prayer Warrior, so both of them test each other's allegiance by doing a "Leap of Faith" and jumping out of cover after counting down from 5. Kelvin jumps out, but is fired on again, and realizes that the other person is a demon supporter. The other person admits this, enraging Kelvin and causing him to want to "punch the asshole in the face". Kelvin lies about being a demon supporter and asks to greet the demon supporter like old friends. The demon supporter believes this enough to get him out of cover, and while he tries to shoot Kelvin, Kelvin's faster and kills the demon supporter. He then leaves before anyone can come to investigate the sound of the gunshot.

Kelvin then encounters a fifteen-year-old who looks like the commander, leading Kelvin to conclude that the boy is Dexter's son. Kelvin shows him an ID card (something he should have asked for during the encounter with the demon supporter), and Dexter Jr. thanks him for coming, saying he couldn't have survived for long out there.

Kelvin and Dexter Jr. return to base, and Dexter introduces them to Jason, Thalia and Draco.

In a very brief author's note, Ebony says she hopes it was better and asks if we liked it. To be honest, it wasn't an especially strong piece of fan fiction, but it certainly seemed like one in comparison to the rest.

Next Installment: The new arrivals go on an infiltration mission, but one of them finds out something unsettling.
