Chapter 15: The I Love You Song

Moloch: He's selling us out to the angels!? Treason! SINCLAIR DRAKE IS A TRAITOR TO DEMONKIND!

Seraph: He has always worked happily with both angels and demons, you neanderthal! I'll admit, though, this wasn't the path I expected of him.

Kama: Hn hn hn... how exciting! In all my calculations he never went this far!

Pixie: Miss Zelenin was really scary last time... I hope Mister Drake won't be scary as an angel...

No, that wasn't fanfic-y stuff last time; the protag can indeed offer himself in place of Zelenin to become the angel. Unfortunately, it's scripted so she becomes the angel; the protag can offer himself twice, but Mastema will still turn him down.

Drake: Maybe I was wrong that this was all about my choices... I feel like a tool for some greater being's amusement...

Zelenin transforms into an angel, though she insists she is still Drake's comrade. She is given the power to remove the aggressive impulses - and, some would say, free will itself - of others with her angel's song. So, with that in mind, it's time to give Jack's Squad a kick to the cerebrum. We simply walk up to the Lightning and Zelenin works her mojo. The results are... striking, to say the least, as Ryan and the other members fall to their knees and beg God for forgiveness for what they have done. And, what do you know, Jimenez shows up. He's not pleased.

Momunofu: He's got more sympathy for the people who ruined his life than his comrade? That's disturbing.

Power: For once, you and I are in total agreement. To remove all human aggression... truly a wonderful thing!

Momunofu: NOW WHERE DID I SAY THAT, ASSHOLE?

Also, I was so distracted by the big twist that I forgot to give a demon roundup for Grus. You can find wild Oberons around here if you don't already have one (which you should), as well as Ammut, the Egyptian devourer of the wicked, who has War Cry which debuffs attack. Grimehkala is like Taotie in that he's invulnerable to conventional weapons but magic drops him in a heartbeat. Gogmagog, the top Jirae, is a weird one, in that he's able to tank pretty much every other kind of attack. Good luck figuring out his personality, too.

Gogmagog: How darings he! It is of personality I have, being of courseness who I am! Is not ablings of changes that!

Ammut: YOU HURT HEAD!

Koppa Tengu: I think I like you.

Grimehkala: DESTROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY!

Kukunochi: Easy there, Big Fella.

Grimehkala: DESTROY?

Finally, there's Persephone, the Greek lady of the dead, probably the most annoying enemy around here due to a multi-hit paralysis attack.

In Mastema's sanctuary there are many Law demons. Anzu, who you already met last time, Valkyrie, who I actually got before this to make Asherah, but didn't mention.

Valkyrie: You only wanted me for my body? MEN!

Be sure to get Xiuhtecuhtly, Aztec god of Fire, 'cause you know what he's got? GRAND TACK!

Xiuhtecuhtli: YOU CAN START BY ENTERING THE CHAMBER OF THE THREE GARGOYLES. PUSH IN THE RIGHT TONGUE, AND A DOOR MIGHT LEAD YOU UP THE STAIRWAY INTO THE WALL CLIMB...

Drake: Ooookay?

Finally, there's Sarasvati, who has Mabufudyne but is probably outclassed at this point. Also, a real badass has joined the party since we last spoke...

Red Rider: ...let me cleanse all those who challenge me from the face of this pathetic planet...

Yep, the Red Rider of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, War incarnate. In fact, they're all available in this game!

White Rider: ...he did not call me this time. Interesting, the paths this Sinclair Drake takes...

Anyway, with introductions done, we can move to plot. Jimenez kindly informs us that the demons saved from Jack's Squad have parked right on top of the angels, in a different type of sanctum. Thankfully, he's still human enough to want to help out, and forks over the forma that'll let us access it.

Inside you'll find some more demons. The only recruitable ones here are Wild Hunt and Succubus, the former of whom has Mudoon (so avoid) and the latter of whom can Charm. She also invited herself into the party.

Succubus: Nice ta see you again, Drake, how about you and me-

Drake: No, but I have a friend back at the ship I think'd like you...

Loki, Kingu, and Kudlak can also be found here, but as they're Dark you can only recruit them with Green Grass (and Kudlak I'm not even sure about due to having the "Wild" personality). A fe short teleports later and we're face to face with the leader of the escaped demons, Grendel, who offers a deal: Drake takes out Jack's Squad and he forks over the keys to the big boss of the sector, Maya, goddess of Illusion. There are actually three options here, for Law, Neutral, and Chaos. Law is to use Zelenin's song on Grendel, turning him into scrambled data. Neutral is to kill Grendel, and Chaos is to kill Ryan. I'm very much not a Chaos person, but I chose that option, as Grendel is an innocent, if a Jerkass.

I avoided this choice on my first playthrough, even though I thought it was the right one, because I was worried Ryan would be as hard as his boss. He really isn't; I actually beat him without Gun-reflectors. If you take this option, Zelenin shows up to admonish the protag for killing "loyal servants of the Lord."

Kin-ki: Geez, why's everyone feelin' sorry for dese bastards all of a sudden?

Go back to Grendel, and he'll unlock the door to the next part of the level. Which is a giant, annoying, profoundly boring maze incorporating every single maze gimmick you've faced thus far. It's really dull. Like the one in Eridanus the majority of it is a fake; once you get to the area that looks like Mitra's palace, go past both the first and second stairwells and go up the third one you come to; this bypasses the vast majority of it, which really only has some treasures to show for it. Before you step in, though, there's a curious encounter with...

Drake: Commander Gore!

It seems this encounter redeems Gore's spirit, as he returns to his old personality, and explains time has not yet run out for humanity.

Drake: Only issue is, should I side with him this time?

There's a few demons deeper into the maze: Gemori, the only female among the Goetia demons; Erlkonig, King of the German Black Forest; and Titania, queen of the faeries. The last two join the party. Titania in particular is a must-have, as she comes with the extremely powerful Mediarahan, a total-party full-heal!

Oberon: Titania! Nice to see yer again! I assure you I didn't peep on any of these young things Drake's got with him. Much.

Titania: Insolence!

Guedhe is also around here, the Voodoo loa of death known as Baron Samedi. He's quite annoying, too; the highest-leveled monster in the area, and has Mudoon. At the end of the pathway is the forma that grants the final unlock upgrade; fortunately, there's a door it opens that leads right to he end of the maze, so no need to do it twice.

Virtue: Hallelujah! Gloria! The Lord has delivered us from terrible mazes!

Up the next stairs, Maya awaits...

Drake's demons are mighty, but do they stand a chance against the very sculptor of the Schwartzwelt? What is Commander Gore's role? What is Zelenin's? And why was everyone feeling so sorry for Jack's Squad, anyway? Stay tuned to find out!
