Returning to Undernet 3, Megaman spots a Black Navi passing by on the lower level, the one that’s completely blocked. The Navi reveals that he has a Blue Frag before taunting Megaman that even if he somehow finds a way down here he won’t be able to stop Gospel’s “Civilization Destruction Plan.” There’s no way for us to get down there, but we do receive an email from Chaud, revealing that there’s an alternate entrance from Koto Square. I haven’t brought it up until now, but throughout the game there’ve been hints that there’s something off about Koto Area, how there seem to be strange viruses and Navis issuing from it. Koto Area itself looks perfectly normal, so how do we get to the secret side of it?

By talking to the Keymaker of course! He’s gone back to Net Square, and is more than happy to make the final Gate Key, Gate Key D. With this we can access the final teleporter in Den Area 1, which leads to a section of Koto Square’s entrance that’s normal blocked off by a one-way conveyer. There’s another teleporter right next to it that takes us to a new part of Koto Area, Under Koto, which has much stronger viruses that the regular area, as well as a merchant with the following:

  • HP Memory – 15000z
  • HP Memory – 20000z
  • HP Memory – 30000z
  • Power UP – 20000z
  • Fast Gauge * - 5000z
  • Slow Gauge * - 5000z
  • Aqua Blade R – 8000z
  • Mindbender D – 10000z

I’m snagging Fast Gauge since it’s going to go right into the S-ranking folder I’m planning for the postgame, as well as the three available Aqua Blades. The other two chips in that series, Fire Blade and Elec Blade, can be bought from other stores, and together they form the powerful Life Sword 3 Program Advance. They’re all in R code too, so they’ll go wonderfully with the folder.

Under Koto turns out to connect to the lower level of Undernet 3. At the end of the pathway is the Black Navi, who’s baffled that we’ve managed to find a way here. After defeating him, he reveals that Gospel’s Supreme Commander Freezeman is almost done with the plan, and then he goes and foolishly reveals that Gospel’s base is in Koto Square, of all places. He vanishes into deletion, dropping Blue Frag A and Gospel ID. So, to Koto Square, but not before we get an email warning that an earthquake of unprecedented proportions is about to strike.

Koto Square is completely empty when we get there, save for the merchants in the side room. We can open the door blocking off the lower half with the Gospel ID. Something I didn’t notice until recently is that Koto Square is actually shaped like a skull, with the area beyond the ID door being the “jaw”. There’s another door like the one that leads to the merchants here, and beyond it is a red area covered with stylized G symbols. Yep, this reeks of Gospel alright.

At the end of the ice-blocked path is Freezeman himself, who congratulates Megaman for coming this far, and says that soon an earthquake measuring as high as 10 on the Ritcher scale is about to hit Electopia. He also reveals that he himself is the final Blue Frag. It’s time to finally bring this scenario to an end.

Freezeman

HP: 1000

Element: Aqua

Attacks:

  • Ice Tower – Freezeman sends out a series of seracs that track Megaman’s movements for 100 Aqua damage.
  • Icicle Fall – Three icicles fall on random panels of Megaman’s area for 50 Aqua damage.
  • Ice Shield – Freezeman surrounds himself in a cocoon of ice, protecting him from damage.
  • Wind – When Freezeman is out of his cocoon a constant gale will force Megaman to his back column.
  • Ice Stage – Should a majority of Freezeman’s area be damaged, he will turn all panels on the field into ice panels.

So, Freezeman. Gospel’s top Navi, an imposing design, the boss of a very long scenario that had us tromping over all of creation, and in the anime he was strong enough to freeze Den City’s entire cyberworld and curbstomp Megaman. So surely this is going to be a tough battle, right?

Ha, no. Freezeman’s actually a gigantic anticlimax. Not only does he not move at all, but he’s an Aqua element Navi standing atop ice panels, which is just begging for an Elec attack to the face. This is where the Toadman chip really shines. Toadman V3 can deal a whopping 720 points of damage to him, and even Toadman’s most basic chip can still hit for 400. Needless to say, there’s no reason whatsoever that one should have trouble with Freezeman. And yet, despite that, I find this to be a really fun battle.

Winning gives us 4000z.

Even in defeat, Freezeman claims that he’s won, since there’s no time to make the final cure and remove all the ice before the earthquake hits. Once he explodes Megaman obtains the final Blue Frag, but it soon shatters, destroying any hope of a cure. But not to worry, a voice says, for now that Freezeman’s been deleted all of the ice on the Net is breaking up by itself, averting disaster. It’s the Doc, come from Under Square to check things out. After telling Megaman and Lan to get going and let everyone know that they’re all right, he takes his leave, wondering how much he should bill the Officials for the cure that he made.

Once Lan returns home (or simply walks downstairs in my case) there’s a little scene with him and Haruka concerning his heroics of the day, and then it’s time a well-deserved rest.

And of course, Mother Nature snaps back to exactly how it was before the Environment System was frozen. And there’s still more “science” to come!

...Really, if you're playing a Mega Man game to learn about science, you have bigger issues to deal with.
