Wrex has a job for Fail Shep to do while he waits for Wiks to make a genophage cure. There have been rumors of rachni activity in what used to be rachni space, which is odd considering that the rachni have been made extinct twice over. The scouts that Wrex sent to investigate the rumors disapeared. He wants Fail Shep to join forces with Aralakh Company, a team of the strongest krogan, to find out what is going on.

Fail Shep meets up with Aralakh on Utukku, the last known location of the missing scouts. The leader of Aralakh, Urdnot Dagg (Grunt's Suspiciously Similar Substitute. Basically a generic Proud Warrior Race Guy) tells Fail Shep that they've investigated the scouts' camp but have not found any bodies. While investigating the camp himself, Fail Shep falls down into some tunnels which are littered with krogan corpses.

There's a big and fairly uneventful level where Fail Shep faces off against Ravagers (Reaper-modified rachni). At one point, Fail Shep finds the corpse of Charr, an NPC from a minor sidequest in ME2. The squad surmises that the Reapers are using Utukku to breed an army of Ravagers in secret.

At the center of the tunnels, the squad finds the Breeder, an artificial Rachni Queen the Reapers created so this mission would be playable for people who killed the Rachni Queen in the first game so they could breed Ravagers. Using some nearby krogan corpses, the Breeder tells the squad that the Reapers are going to kill her now that our heroes know she exists. Meanwhile, Dagg informs Fail Shep that Aralakh is being overwhelmed and needs to evacuate now. Fail Shep has two options: order Aralakh to hold the line to be him time to save the clearly insane Breeder, or let the Breeder die and gain the allegiance of the full might of the much more reliable Aralakh Company.

Fail Shep chooses to save the abomination.

Dagg shows up to escort Fail Shep out of the tunnels, but their exit is blocked by a small army of Ravagers. Dagg sacrifices himself so Shepard can escape.

Back on the Normandy, after Hackett points out how stupid allying with a Reaper created lifeform is, Wiks reveals that he has found a cure for the genophage.

Also, for some reason, the Breeder isn't listed as a war asset. I do get some EMS for Aralakh though.

I think the change made in the LE where Aralakh Company is either damaged or straight-up gone if you save the Rachni was a good call. It feels a bit weird that you can do this mission and sacrifice Aralakh only for it not to matter in the original. And of course it makes a Failure run all the more potent.
