Definiton of Free motif

Free motifs are story elements that may be omitted without disturbing the casual/logical/chronological order of events. In mystery storys free motifs are nasty details that may or may not pertain to the murder. The process of solving a mystery involves turning free, seemingly decorative motifs into bound motifs, inextricably involved in the murder itself.
