Well, OK, I guess we'll use who I was using last update (the FFIV endgame team) with Rydia subbed out for Golbez.

The next floor after B13 is considered the start of another dungeon, the Depths.

Music: The True Moon

Creepy. The aesthetics for this place are well done too, it looks like some sort of ruined temple or something, with bits and pieces floating in the starry void. I think it works well.

You might want to take note of that, as this is, quite possibly, the last complement I have for this game. There is one scene I can think of that may be worth praise, but for the most part, oh boy. Final Tale, Part Two is horrible.

We start by heading south. Here we find a Save Point, a healing tile, an interdimensional elevator tile, and a Namingway. I assume having this base here is due to the original version of the game, where the Subterrane and the Depths were in different tales.

Even further south is the way to B2. Starting to the east of us is a Crystal Shield. Crystal gear is resistant to undead. After that, we can just keep heading south to B3.

West from the start of B3 is a Cat-Ear Hood. This protects against ice. Not much else of interest on this floor, so further south we go.

B4 has two things we are interested in. First is a Protect Ring to the east. Edge learns Tremor on our way to the second, a Brave Suit found in a secret passage accessed from the southeast. The Brave Suit protects against Curse, which is a handy thing to resist. Halved Attack is annoying. A teleporter pad at the south marks our way to the next floor.

B5 starts with a Save Point. As Golbez is alive, we'll get a cutscene here. That night, Golbez stands at the edge of the floor, looking into the void.

Cecil: Golbez...

Golbez: Ah, Cecil.

Cecil: I... I am glad to see you back.

Golbez: And the same to you, as well.

Cecil: I cannot say for sure what our enemy was doing to my mind. But within my heart... it was as if the light was slowly fading away from me, deep inside.

Golbez: ...

Cecil: I felt so isolated. I was inside of a world of profound darkness... However, I still had faith... faith that Rosa and Ceodore and my friends would come to my aid... But I must admit, I certainly did not expect you to be among my saviors.

Golbez: Cecil...

Cecil: So... thank you, my brother.

Golbez: If you need to thank someone, thank Fusoya.

Cecil: What?

Golbez: It was he who sent me to you... putting his own body on the line in the process.

Cecil: Fusoya did that!?

Golbez: He did.

Cecil: So it was Fusoya that sent you back...

Golbez: Yes. But I had also had enough of hiding.

Cecil: Oh?

Golbez: Indeed.

Cecil: So you are no longer ashamed of your name, Golbez?

Golbez: No. I have to live up to my sins... and myself.

OK, let's get going. We'll start by heading to the west. A circle on the ground here teleports us to a Crystal. But... we're out of bosses to recycle...

The Crystal turns black and shatters.

The Crystal shatters, filling the room with an ominous presence. As it thickens, the aura begins to take form before you...

Hey, this sounds familiar...

...Revealing the great oppressor of the soil: Lich, the Fiend of Earth!

OH YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FUCKING KIDDING ME!

What the fucking hell, Square Enix? You run out of bosses, so instead of being original, you copy a gimmick from the bonus dungeons of the remakes of the original Final Fantasy!? Keep in mind that unlike that instance, these fights are not optional. If this was just for some bonus stuff, eh, no problem. But this... this is just lazy. What the fuck.

Oh, and also, in the 20th Anniversary version of FFI, they includeed remixes of the boss themes of the games they borrowed bosses from. They couldn't be arsed to do this here. Don't worry, I'll provide suitable alternatives to FFIV's Battle 2.

Alternative Music: Boss Battle B from Final Fantasy

So yeah, in this update, we'll be fighting the Four Fiends. Lich already loses a bit of his power when we cast Float on our party, being the earth guy and all. He's weak to Fire, which Golbez can take advantage of, and Holy, which means Cecil and Kain are huge damage dealers, and we also Slow him because he can use Haste. He counters magic with Sleep and can use Bio, but it's not a problem. Rosa learns Arise after we win.

Cecil: The Earth Crystal?

Kain: That was no elemental archfiend...

Rosa: That enemy was like none we've seen before. Are there others like this still ahead?

Edge: This is a bad omen. I don't like this place one bit...

Golbez: (What was that thing?)

Our reward is the Assassin's Dagger. This is a pretty good knife if you want a mage to attack and can inflict KO.

Well, next up, we'll head east. Another Crystal. The room glows red when we approach it.

???: Hee hee hee hee... So... you are the ones who dare to disturb the great Marilith's slumber? I will not let you wrest my fire force away from me... Instead, you will be burnt to cinders by my flames!

The Crystal shatters, and we're now fighting Marilith. Two steps to victory here. First step is Slow, second is Blizzaga. Simple enough. She's such a pushover, a dunno what she can do, other than Firaga and Silence.

Cecil: So these monsters are resurrections as well?

Kain: That was no simple minion.

Edge: It's just one after another! What is going on here!?

Rosa: She was the protector of the Fire Crystal...

Golbez: (I never imagined I would ever fight a fire wielder more powerful than Rubicante.)

She was a pushover! You were doing 7000 damage a turn! Anyway, we get the Rising Sun, a boomerang that's technically stronger than what I've got on Edge, but weaker due to lower Strength boosts. I still put it own, as boomerangs give him full damage from the back row.

Next up is the southwest. Another Crystal. This time, it's a blue glow.

???: Oh ho ho... You dare to challenge Kraken, the Fiend of Water? Do you honestly wish to throw your lives away so quickly?

The Crystal shatters and the fight begins. See Marilith, replace Blizzaga with Thundaga, although he likes to muddle things with Constrict counters. After a while...

The Kraken is charging power!

He's preparing for Deluge, and it's kinda pathetic. It only did about 400 damage to everyone. He falls soon after.

Cecil: Yet another strange enemy conjured up by a Crystal...

Kain: These monsters... They control the elements, much like the archfiends.

Rosa: The Fiend... of Water?

Edge: No hard feelings, all right? We're in a hurry here.

Golbez: (A... a fiend?)

Our reward is Triton's Dagger, a knife which casts Flood when used, and is stronger than Edge's katanas.

One left, and it's to the southeast. The screen shakes as we approach the Crystal.

???: So... you've made it this far. 'Tis a sad thing that your collective destiny ends here... right now! I am Tiamat... the Fiend of Wind!

The Crystal shatters, and we're up against Tiamat. First step against (him? her?) it is to cast Slow, as per usual. We also Haste Rosa, just in case, and as it has no weaknesses, Golbez will use Flare. Tiamat spends the majority of the fight being a total pain in the arse, having high damage group attacks, a group Poison attack, and a group Maelstrom. We eventually defeat it, though.

Cecil: The Fiend... of Wind?

Kain: I never knew such a powerful dragon existed in this universe!

Trust me, there's much stronger.

Rosa: Why is this moon here? And what is it trying to accomplish with the Crystals?

Edge: One thing's for sure... Zeromus's moon had nothing on this one.

Golbez: (The Fiends... Were they created by this moon?)

I sure hope not, Dissidia 012 messes with FFI's plot enough already. Our reward is the Dragon Claws. These are Holy and deal extra damage to dragons.

Next time Kain and Golbez are coming along. That's three open slots as we continue our descent into awfulness. See you then.

Lich and Kraken actually used Boss Battle A, which fits them better.

Next time, bring Cecil/Ceodore, Rosa, and Cid/Luca/Gekku, why not?

I am aware that Lich and Kraken use different music in FFI, but, eh. I'm lazy too. Just not as lazy.

So this game defiles not just FFIV but also the first. What next, FFVI and VII.

I vote for Rydia, Rosa and Edge. Close to the original final party.
