Some Number Crunching

When we last left off we had just had a grand old time at the festival. Now though it's time to do some number crunching. Specifically we are going to talk about food, and how we can make money off of what we currently have, or might have in the near future. Unfortunately, I don't have all the numbers that I need to get complete values right now.

Here's what's going on, nearly every food I've gathered from farming (or fishing) can be used in a basic recipe that only requires that specific item. For instance, Milk as we know already can be made into Hot Milk meaning we can sell it for 210G instead of 60G. This means that when trying to figure out how valuable any recipe is that requires any milk product, that I should see what the cost is based off of Hot Milk instead of regular Milk. For the sake of discussion we'll call the 210G value of Hot Milk, the True Value of Milk.

Going through all the food items I have, I figure out their true values in this manner. Strawberries if made into Strawberry Jam first have a True Value of 130 instead of 110, Tomatos have a True Value of 290 instead of 100 if first made into Tomato Juice, and all the fish I've seen have an increased True Value if first cooked.

With just these numbers known, I can tell for instance that making a Salad isn't cost effective as it's only worth 330G and requires five ingredients. Two of those ingredients are Tomatoes and Wakame Seaweed. While I don't know much about the seaweed, I do know I can sell it for at least 100G, so between the Seaweed and the Tomatoes alone I have at least 390G of money going into the making of a salad. Now keep in mind here, all I'm saying is that it's not cost effective to make a salad. It might actually be the tastiest dish ever, or the perfect gift for someone. However, when it comes to selling my produce there is no reason to make a salad.

As I say though, I don't have all the information that I need to make informed decisions. For instance, I know the Store sells some basic ingredients, that I can't yet obtain on my own and I don't have the cost of those things right now. Such as oil. Even though I used oil the other day, I forgot to record the cost of it, meaning I don't actually know the True Value of Potatoes.

Also when it comes to the True Values of foods, I can see that if I combine Milk and Strawberries that I can make Strawberry Milk. The value of Strawberry milk is greater than Hot Milk and Strawberry Jam combined, so shouldn't I be using the value of Strawberry Milk to calculate the True Value of Milk and Strawberries? Or because you might not always have both Strawberries and Milk, should I just keep in mind that Strawberry Milk is more valuable than the current True Values for either item. But now that I've been showing you what I've been doing let me share what knowledge I do have currently.

Potatoes have a true value based off French Fries (requiring oil), but I also need to check to see if Boiled Potatoes are a better value.

Strawberries have a true value of 130 instead of their base value of 110 if you make them into Strawberry Jam first. Better to save them for use in Strawberry Milk though, that sells for 420.

Tomatoes have a true value of 290 instead of their base value of 100 if you make them into Tomato Juice first.

Milk has a true value of 210 instead of its base value of 60 if you make it into Hot Milk first. If you have a supply of strawberries, you should be making Strawberry Milk instead.

When it comes to fish, Sardines and Turbots should be first turned into Sashimi, while Needlefish should be fried. True Values of 185, 265, and 110 respectively (compared to base values of 30, 75, and 35).

So until next time, when we take some time to go to the store and do some price checking.
