Chapter 22: Begin Phase 2

  • Saffron City

Yellow: That's done it. Team Rocket is still around, but we've driven them off for a while. I guess now we should get back to fighting the Gym Leaders.

Lumina: Another day, another battle. As always.

  • Saffron City Pokemon Gym
    • Leader: Sabrina. The Master of Psychic Pokemon!

Gym Guy: Yo! Champ in making! Sabrina's Pokemon use psychic power instead of force! Fighting Pokemon are weak against Psychic Pokemon. They get creamed before they can even aim a punch!

Yellow: (He didn't say anything about how to win... I'll have to go with sheer force.)

  • Battle Team Changed:
    • Lumina the Pikachu, Lv 32
    • Urbeth the Vulpix, Lv 32
    • Leviat the Gyarados, Lv 33
    • Charles the Kadabra, Lv 33
    • Torte the Wartortle, Lv 28
    • Jolt the Jolteon, Lv 25

{This gym is divided into nine chambers, with 7 of them having 4 teleporters, and the entrance and leader's room each having one.}

Psychic: Sabrina is young, but she's also our Leader! You won't reach her easily!

{This psychic uses Lv 33 Slowpoke, Slowpoke, and Slowbro. Lumina takes on the first two, but takes heavy damage while doing so. Leviat comes in to finish the fight.}

Lumina: Another new technique... I can become quicker at will... But I don't need that, I'm fast enough.

{Lumina reaches level 33, but chooses not to learn Agility}

Psychic: I lost my concentration! There used to be 2 Pokemon gyms in Saffron.

Yellow: What happened?

Psychic: The fighting Dojo next door lost its Gym status when we went and creamed them!

Yellow: (...Sabrina sounds like some kind of villain.)

Psychic: You know that power alone isn't enough!

Yellow: Right, you also need strategy, and trust!

{This psychic uses Lv 34 Mr. Mime and Kadabra. Leviat takes them on with Bite and Dragon Rage attacks.}

Yellow: (From training Charles, I know the psychic type's achilles heel. Kadabra has low health and defense, so my best bet is physical attacks that are strong enough to outstrip Recover.)

Psychic: I don't believe this! Sabrina just wiped out the Karate Master next door.

{Yellow is a bit surprised to see a Channeler here.}

Channeler: Pokemon take on the appearance of their trainers. Your Pokemon must be tough, then!

{This Channeler and her Lv 38 Haunter are thankfully in a normal trainer pokemon relationship. Charles is able to win, but it is surprisingly close.}

Channeler: I knew it! I must teach better techniques to my Pokemon!

Channeler: Sabrina is younger than I, but I respect her!

{This channeler uses Lv 34 Gastly and Haunter. Charles wins easily, growing to level 34.}

Channeler: Not good enough! In a battle of equals, the one with the stronger will wins! If you wish to beat Sabrina, focus on winning!

Channeler: You and I, our Pokemon shall fight!

{This one uses Lv 33 Gastly, Gastly, and Haunter. Charles is still more than a match for them, although Torte switches in to help counteract Confuse Ray}

Channeler: I lost after all! I knew that this was going to take place.

Psychic: Does our unseen power scare you?

{This Psychic uses Lv 31 Kadabra, Slowpoke, Mr. Mime, and Kadabra. Lumina and Leviat switch in and out to match the opponent.}

Psychic: I never forsaw this! Psychic Pokemon fear only bugs!

Yellow: (Ah, that's it! Jolteon's Pin missle counts as a Bug attack for some reason. That's why it worked so well on Saurio, and how Purple beat this gym!)

Psychic: Saffron Pokemon Gym is famous for its psychics! You want to see Sabrina! I can tell!

Yellow: Of course I do! You don't need telepathy to figure that out.

{This psychic uses a single Lv 38 Slowbro. Lumina wins easily, as Slowbro happens to not use any attacks.}

Psychic: Arrrgh!

Lumina: Hmm, I wonder how common it is for humans to have psychic powers...

{Yellow eventually reaches Sabrina.}

Sabrina: I had a vision of your arrival! I have had psychic powers since I was a child. I first learned to bend spoons with my mind. I dislike fighting, but if you wish, I will show you my powers!

===Battle Start: versus Psychic Leader Sabrina===

{Sabrina sends out a level 50 Abra.}

Yellow: What the heck? Jolt, see what you can do! (Lv 25)

{Round 1: Jolt uses Quick Attack. Sabrina uses an X Defend on Abra. Hp 69/69 vs 85%}

Yellow: Why? Why is your pokemon so experienced, and without having evolved yet?

Sabrina: Why? I have my reasons. (It's a trap for trainers who send their best Pokemon out first. The Flash attack I taught Abra will blind them to make it easier for my real fighters to win.)

Jolt: The level is because Sabrina was supposed to be the 3rd strongest Gym Leader, even though her location doesn't lend itself to the idea of fighting her 6th. Actually, all of the second 4 Gym Leaders are around this level.

{Round 2: Jolt uses Quick Attack, Abra's Flash fails. Hp 69/69 vs 75%)

Yellow: There's other things I don't get. Why didn't you do anything about the Team Rocket member blocking your door earlier?

Sabrina: Didn't I say I dislike fighting?

Yellow: That doesn't match up with your other actions. Like training your Pokemon up to such high levels: That had to have taken hundreds of battles... Or wiping out the Fighting Gym!

{Round 3: Jolt uses Quick attack. Abra's flash fails. Hp 69/69 vs 60%}

Jolt: That's the trouble with moves with 70% accuracy: it feels more like 30%

Sabrina: ...I do not expect you to understand the League's internal affairs.

{Round 4: Jolt uses Quick attack and gets a critical hit. Abra uses Flash, but it misses again. Hp 69/69 vs 35%}

{Round 5: Jolt uses Quick attack again, but gets a face full of Abra's Flash, lowering his accuracy. Hp 69/69 vs 15%}

Jolt: I'm still more likely to hit than you!

{Round 6: Jolt misses. Abra's Flash misses.}

{Round 7: Jolt misses. Abra's Flash misses.}

{Round 8: Both pokemon's attacks work. Hp 69/69 vs 5%}

{Round 9: Jolt misses. Flash works.}

{Round 10: Jolt misses, Flash fails.}

{Round 11: Jolt misses. Flash works.}

Jolt: I'm still gonna hit eventually! I've got 19 more uses of Quick Attack, and your infinite move uses mean you can't even use Struggle! I'm not even a heavy hitter, so wasting all our time is pointless!

{Round 12: Jolt hits with quick attack, defeating Abra.}

Sabrina: Then it's time for Kadabra to fight. (Lv 50)

Yellow: Leviat, switch in! Bite! (Lv 34)

{Round 13: Kadabra uses recover, but with the wrong timing it does nothing. Leviat uses Bite. Hp 116/116 vs 55%}

{Round 14: Kadabra uses Psywave. Leviat uses Bite. Hp 45/116 vs 5%}

Yellow: So, you can fight...

{Round 15: Kadabra uses Psychic. Leviat falls.}

Yellow: ...But if you're that strong, why didn't you kick Team Rocket out of town yourself? By the way, go Urbeth! (Lv 32)

{Round 16: Urbeth uses Quick Attack. Kadabra uses Kinesis to lower her accuracy. Hp 79/79 vs 1%}

Sabrina: I suppose you wouldn't know this, but Gym Leaders are forbidden to interfere in outside affairs. It's one of several precautionary measures to keep one of us from trying to take over the world ourselves.

Yellow: Does that actually work?

Sabrina: It depends. (But in this case...)

{Round 17: Urbeth uses Quick Attack, defeating Kadabra}

Yellow: Nice work Urbeth!

Sabrina: But the fight's not over yet. Go, Alakazam! (Lv 50)

Yellow: ... Lumina, We have to stall for now. Thunder Wave! (Lv 33)

{Round 18: Sabrina uses an X Defend on Kadabra. Lumina uses Thunder Wave to paralyze it.}

Sabrina: That won't be enough to defeat me.

Yellow: Switch in, Urbeth! (Lv 32)

{Round 19: Alakazam uses Reflect to armor itself.}

Yellow: Confuse Ray.

{Round 20: Alakazam is confused, and hurts itself in confusion. Hp 79/79 vs 95%}

Yellow: (Now, the chances of Alakazam launching an attack are slim.)

Sabrina: But meanwhile, Reflect defends against even self-inflicted physical attacks.

Yellow: Right. But suppose it's defense is lowered more? Tail Whip.

{Round 21: Urbeth lowers Alakazam's defense. Alakazam snaps out of confusion but is unable to move.}

Yellow: Now to confuse it again.

{Round 22: Alakazam is hit by a second confuse ray, and hurts itself again. Hp 79/79 vs 85%}

Yellow: More Tail whips.

{Round 23: Alakazam's Defenses are lowered further. It uses reflect, but can't, as his previous Reflect is still there}

Sabrina: Ah!

Yellow: Getting it now?

{Round 24: Alakazam's defenses are lowered further. but it manages to strike out with a Psychic blast! Urbeth faints.}

Sabrina: But it wasn't complete. And now you can't keep Alakazam confused for long.

Yellow: It'll last long enough. Lumina, Slam!

{Round 25: Lumina's not strong enough to do much more, though. Alakazam snaps out of confusion and uses reflect, but it doesn't work. Hp: 74/74 vs 50%}

{Round 26: Lumina misses, but Alakazam is fully paralyzed.}

{Round 27: Lumina lands a critical hit, not that that's much better than normal with the current stat changes. Alakazam uses Psychic and defeats Lumina! Hp vs 25%}

Lumina: Yell...

Yellow: ... Honestly, I was hoping I'd have to do this. Go Charles! (Lv 34)

{Round 28: Yellow revives Lumina. Alakazam tries Reflect, but still can't.}

{Round 29: Yellow revives Urbeth. Alakazam tries another Reflect.}

{Round 30: Yellow heals Lumina. Alakazam uses Recover. Hp 78/78 vs 75%}

{Round 31: Yellow heals Urbeth. Alakazam can't move.}

Yellow: Now, Jolt.

{Round 32: Yellow switches in Jolt. Alakazam uses Psywave, but it does very little damage this time. Hp 64/69 vs 75%}

Yellow: Sand Attack.

{Round 33: Alakazam's accuracy falls. It tries reflect but fails again.}

{Round 34: Alakazam's accuracy falls. It uses Psywave, but is unlucky with the Random damage again. Hp 58/69 vs 75%}

Yellow: I know how to beat a single Pokemon.

{Round 35: Alakazam's accuracy falls. Alakazam can't move.}

{Round 36: Alakazam's accuracy falls. It tries Reflect, but fails.}

{Round 37: Alakazam's accuracy falls. It tries reflect, but fails.}

{Round 38: Alakazam's accuracy falls to minimum. It tries Psychic, but misses.}

Yellow: Should have tried that earlier, instead of using moves you knew wouldn't work! Now, Tail Whip.

{Round 39: Alakazam's defense falls. It can't move.}

{Round 40: Alakazam's defense falls. It uses Recover. Hp 58/69 vs 100%}

{Round 41: Alakazam's defense falls to minimum. It tries recover, but fails.}

Yellow: Now, let's see what Quick Attack does.

{Round 42: Jolt uses Quick Attack. Alakazam recovers it back up (It didn't do much.}

Yellow: Sigh, I guess I'll have to do this, then. Urbeth!

{Round 43: Yellow switches Urbeth back in. Alakazam uses Psywave and hits, doing reasonably well! Hp 39/79 vs 100%}

Yellow: Confuse Ray.

Sabrina: You can't!

{Round 44: Alakazam is confused, and attacks itself. Hp 39/79 vs 45%}

Yellow: I think I can. Quick Attack!

{Round 45: Urbeth uses Quick attack, not doing much. Alakazam finishes itself off! Lumina grows to level 34}

Sabrina: I'm shocked! But, a loss is a loss.

Yellow: Sorry for wasting your time. I should have just revived Leviat for the finishing blows...

Sabrina: I admit I didn't work hard enough to win! (Seriously, what was wrong with me?) You earned the Marshbadge!

===End Battle===

Sabrina: The Marshbadge makes Pokemon up to level 70 obey you! Stronger Pokemon will become wild, ignoring your orders in battle! Just don't raise your Pokemon too much!

Yellow: You know, I really doubt that.

Sabrina:... Wait, please take this Tm with you! It contains Psywave. It uses powerful psychic waves that inflict random damage! That makes it unpredictable, but impossible to defend against!

Yellow: Thanks...

Sabrina: The reason I was so willing to fight the Karate King... it's because everyone has psychic power! People just don't realize it! Especially the ones who focus on physical strength...

Yellow: ...I don't think that's entirely true.

Sabrina: ...Perhaps.

Gym Guy: Psychic power, huh? If I had that, I'd make a bundle at the slots!

  • Saffron Pokemon Center

Yellow: I'm sorry, Leviat.

Leviat: Grr...

Yellow: I'm completely aware you were the best choice. I just... never got around to sending you back in.

Lumina: You already proved that against the Gym Trainers. You don't need to keep proving yourself.

Leviat. Ado... Yes I do. You heard Jolt, all the remaining Gym Leaders are much more experienced than we are now. We need more training, All of us.

Yellow: ...You'll get another chance. I promise...
