Chapter 7: The Cape

  • Route 24

{Yellow and his team have decided to go north for training before challenging the Cerulean Gym, since all other paths are blocked by natural barriers. However, there are obstructions here as well.}

Bug Catcher: This is Nugget Bridge! Beat us 5 trainers and win a fabulous prize! Think you got what it takes?

===Battle Start: Versus Nugget Bridge #1===

{The bug catcher uses a level 14 Caterpie and Weedle. Magikarp is able to win on his own with the help of a Potion.}

Bug Catcher: Whoo! Good Stuff!

===Battle end===

Bug Catcher: I did my best! I have no regrets!

Lass: I'm second! Now it's serious!

===Battle Start: Versus Nugget Bridge #2===

{The Lass uses a Level 14 Pidgey, who Magikarp and Pikachu fight, and a female Nidoran, who Magikarp and Bulbasaur fight.}

{Bulbasaur grows to level 14}

Lass: How could I lose?

===Battle end===

{Yellow goes back to heal before fighting the third trainer}

Youngster: Here's No. 3! I won't be easy!

===Battle Start: Versus Nugget Bridge #3===

{The youngster starts with a level 14 Rattata. Yellow switches in Pikachu to deal with it quickly. Magikarp grows to Level 16.}

{Next the youngster uses lv 14 Ekans. Yellow lets Magikarp and Bulbasaur fight it, switching back and forth whenever the snake tries to wrap around one of them while Bulbasaur's leech seeds wear it down.}

Youngster: You can't do that!

Yellow: And yet I am. I must have steady hands or something.

{However, Magikarp was poisoned during the fight. Yellow keeps him in for a second against the youngster's next pokemon: level 14 Zubat, before letting Pikachu finish the fight. Or at least that was the plan, but an unfortunate Supersonic attack forces Yellow to let Magikarp finish things. Fortunately he had an Antidote. }

Youngster: Ow! Stomped flat!

===Battle End===

{Yellow retreats to heal his team.}

Pikachu: What kind of fight was that?!

Yellow: I'm sorry, okay? There was a 50% chance you'd be able to attack just fine, and I didn't realize you'd be hurt so badly if you overloaded yourself.

Pikachu: ...Fine. I guess I can forgive you this time. We did win, after all.

Lass: I'm No. 4! Getting tired?

Yellow: Nope. (Not as long as the Pokemon center is just a minute away.)

===Battle Start Versus Nugget Bridge #4===

{This Lass uses a level 16 Pidgey and Nidoran f- a step up from the previous 3 trainers. However, the same strategy works for her as the previous Lass.}

{In the course of battle, Pikachu grows to Level 21.}

Lass: I lost too!

===Battle End===

Jr. Trainer: OK! I'm No. 5! I'll stomp you!

===Battle Start: Versus Nugget Bridge #5===

{This last trainer uses a Lv 18 Mankey. Yellow sends out Bulbasaur to weaken it with Leech Seed and Vine Whip attacks, But he can't withstand Mankey's crushing Low Kicks and Karate Chops for long. Magikarp Takes over, but Yellow is forced to Switch Pikachu in in hopes of taking it down with a Slam attack. This fails, but Magikarp is able to survive just long enough for Leech Seed to finish the enemy off.}

Jr. Trainer: Whoa! Too much!

===End Battle===

{Yellow Heals his team at the pokemon center before going to collect his prize.}

Supervisor: Congratulations! You beat our 5 contest trainers! You just earned a fabulous prize!

{Yellow receives a solid gold Nugget}

Supervisor: By the way, would you like to join Team Rocket?

Pikachu: Team Rocket's reach extends here too?

Recruiter: We're a group dedicated to evil using Pokemon! Want to join?

Yellow: No.

Recruiter: Are you sure?

Yellow: Yes I'm sure.

Recruiter: Come on, join us!

Yellow: Not a chance.

Recruiter: I'm telling you to join!

Yellow: And I told you "no".

Recruiter: OK, you need convincing! I'll make you an offer you can't refuse! {He readies a whip}

Yellow: There's no such thing! We're prepared to fight! On my mark, Pikachu...

Pikachu: You're powerless against us!

===Battle: Engaging Team Rocket!===

{The Team Rocket Recruiter sent out Ekans!} (Lv 15)

Yellow: Bulbasaur, Leech Seed!

{Round 1: Ekans Wraps around Bulbasaur, immobilizing him. HP 33/39 vs 100%}

Ekans: Too slow, foolish plant.

Yellow: Then, Switch in, Magikarp!

{Round 2, Crumpling to the ground, Ekans lunges for Magikarp in another Wrap. HP 31/34 vs 100%}

{Round 3: Bulbasaur is switched back in. Ekans Wraps again.}

{Round 4: Magikarp is switched in. Ekans uses Poison Sting. HP 26/34 vs 1005}

Yellow: Tackle it, Magikarp!

{Round 5: Magikarp is faster than Ekans and lands a Critical hit. Ekans crits back with another Wrap. HP 22/34 vs 80%}

{Round 6: Yellow switches in Bulbasaur. Ekans leers at him, but he pays no attention. HP 29/39}

Yellow: Let's try this again. Leech Seed!

{Round 7: Ekans uses Poison Sting. Bulbasaur Manages to hit with Leech seed. HP 23/39 vs 80%}

Yellow: Now, Tackle it!

{Round 8: Ekans leers as Leech seed drains it's health. Bulbasaur hits with Tackle. HP 25/39 vs 55%}

{Round 9: Ekans leers again. Bulbasaur tackles. HP 27/39 vs 25%}

{Round 10: Ekans tries Wrap, but misses. Bulbasaur weakens it further with Tackle. HP 29/39 vs 4%}

Bulbasaur: Your tricks may serve you well in the wild, but not against a trainer. But then, using them here wasn't your idea. Apologies for your bad luck in trainers.

Ekans: Don't... you... Dare... guaagh!

{Round 11: Ekans stings Bulbasaur quite badly, but then collapses as Leech seed drains the last of it's strength. HP 20/39 vs 0%}

Yellow: Weaker than your contest trainers. Did you think you could win like that?

Rocket: You ain't seen nothing yet! Go, Zubat! (Lv 15)

Yellow: Magikarp! Tackle!

{Round 12: Magikarp hits, Zubat's supersonic fails. HP 22/34 vs 95%}

{Round 13: Magikarp hits again, but Zubat gets Supersonic to work.}

Yellow: Shift in, Pikachu!

{Round 14: Zubat reacts quickly with another Supersonic, which doesn't work.}

Yellow: Thundershock!

Pikachu: Thunder force... ChaAA!

{Round 15: Zubat is defeated. Pikachu stands looking at the Rocket, still sparking.}

Rocket: Arrgh! You are good!

===Battle End===

Rocket: With your ability, you could become a top leader in Team Rocket!

Yellow: I don't doubt that.

{Yellow continues north a bit, finding a boy sitting on a ledge.}

Boy: I'm not good at raising Pokemon. I should release my Charmander because I haven't raised it well... If you promise me you'll care for it, it's yours.

Yellow: I think I can do that. Welcome to the team, Charmander.

Boy: Take good care of my Charmander!

{Yellow finds a Tm for Thunder Wave, an attack Pikachu already knows, and no one else can learn yet. Still, it might come in handy someday... for now, he goes back to Cerulean.}
