14: Playing Chicken

What exactly was behind that door at the bottom of the Green Ruins? The question kept biting at him as he slept. He vowed that he would find an answer to that question today.

Before tending to his farm, he whips up some picked turnips to keep his energy up. Surprisingly, the other food that he prepared several days ago has yet to degrade in quality.

Later on, he makes his Sharp Talon delivery to Kanno, but is then asked for a Hard Horn to continue his experiment. The experminet doesn't concern him much for the moment, as he realizes he now has enough money and wood to improve his kitchen. Next stop: Emo Carpenter's house. For 10,000 gold and 120 bundles of wood, he constructs a "ba-bump" kitchen for our hero. Raguna goes back home to check out his new kitchen, which is spacious, yet hospitable. I It could use a rug or two, though.

With his battle preparations completed, he takes Chit down to the Green Ruins. The Moondrop flowers that he had grown over the past few days are finished (apparently, they seem to grow at the same rate as surface plants), and he saves them to hand out to the ladies for tomorrow. The trail of feathers eventually leads him to the door at the bottom of the dungeon. Raguna takes a deep breath and pushes the door open. And lo, there was a great clucking sound, and a giant angry cockatrice descended from the heavens. The battle is mostly one-sided, as Raguna tends to scream like a little girl whenever he takes a hit (and this cocatrice hits pretty damn hard, let me tell you). Chowing down on various food items only keeps Raguna's stamina up long enough to whittle the monster's HP down halfway before getting knocked out.

Fortunately, losing a battle doesn't mean Game Over, as it did in the original Rune Factory (and probably in RF 2, which I haven't played yet). Instead, our loser hero wakes up at the infirmary the next day at 10 AM. Lara admonishes the boy for overexerting himself, and urges him to take it easy.

Without much time to do any work, he misses his chance to talk to Anette. He is mildly excited that his first set of cucumbers has grown in, which should make him a decent amount of money.

He also goes around town handing out Moondrop flowers to several of the girls. Not many of them are all that impressed by them, but Eunice seems to get the most enjoyment out of them. I guess it's because she's a more domestic type than most.

Selphy's started organizing her books a little better. Though the floor still looks like crap, there are more things to read on the shelves now. She doesn't have anything new for sale, but Raguna purchases a book on making foods from a mixer to go with his new kitchen.

Returning briefly to check on his plants in the Green Ruins, Raguna notices a swirling sphere of dark energy. "That wasn't there before", he thinks. With his biting hunch that dark energy portals never lead to anything good, he avoids it, lest he be sucked back into the fight with Super Chicken Boo.

All that's left for him to do is start clearing the ever-expanding sea of debris on the farm, and then try to get some rest. Good luck, kid...you'll need it.
