* Anvilicious: His Manga/KimbaTheWhiteLion video on addressing the infamous "Lion King vs. Kimba" plagiarism emphasizes multiple important points when it comes to media.
** 1) Do research before making any assumptions and opinions, and do not be too quick to judge especially if you never consume those media yourself, and instead buy into weak journalism that contains misinformation and inaccurate details.
--->Adam: This is once again proof that being a published author doesn't mean you have any idea what you're talking about!
** 2) Any form of storytelling and literary devices is done to death. This should not invalidate any creators to be expressive on their creative thoughts and works, regardless of whether their works are original or not, and coincidences do occur all the time.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: His own band An Unkindness shows impressive promise and showcases Adam's vocals surprisingly well. Made more awesome that Music/Band covered their song "Fragments" for the album Pollinator!
* BrokenBase:
** Adam's negative reviews towards movies that garnered a huge fanbase or gotten glowing praise will garner some negative attention and criticism, mainly towards his nit-pick attitude, sometimes coming off as StopHavingFunGuy or complaining for the sake of complaining.
*** Adam's approach toward film criticism has become rather divisive. While none will dispute his ability to comment on the technical aspects of filmmaking, many feel that he is far too harsh, nit-picky orientated, and bursting to the brim with BiasSteamroller to fairly evaluate the stories of said movies he dislikes. Adam and his fans are aware of this broken base and frequently remind distractors that his reviews solely reflect his opinions and should not be taken as gospel.
** His video on the two Creator/SachaBaronCohen movies Film/Borat and Film/Bruno2009 where he felt Bruno was easily on par with Borat. Some people felt he made a number of good points, both movies used caricature to bring forth real reactions and to expose negative opinions, and both derived humor from pointing and laughing at such people who hold these bigotries. Others disagreed with his analysis and felt he gave too much credit to Bruno as the film either couldn't cross the line enough or that Bruno himself was more annoying than funny.
** Depending on who you ask, you'll either find his constant usage of continuing the Cool Cat MemeticMutation either very endearing and funny or obnoxious and that he should let the meme die already.
*** Some will feel his attempts to make memes in general are either endearing or completely bland, especially with reviews where he extends memes for uber lengths, either making the audience laugh or just groan for him to get to the review already.
** Despite giving his thoughts on Film/DeathNote2017, Adam got a lot of flack for criticizing Creator/AdamWingard, specifically his films Film/YoureNext and Film/TheGuest, telling Website/Twitter followers they were horrible movies. This garnered some flak from people who actually praised those two films as Wingard's bests, especially the former. It got ugly when Adam went on an endless tirade about You're Next and got into an argument/debate with fellow movie reviewer Nyx Fears who attempted to defend You're Next.
** The falling out between Adum and Mark has been a polarizing topic for fans of Adam's channel on a whole. The reason for falling out was due to Mark not doing his job as Adum's editor, and blowing through some of his money, while also flaking on certain agreements Adum and Mark had made. As a result, Adum fired Mark and made him moveout. On one hand, some think Adum was wrong for firing him, and making him move out, as many saw Mark as being one of the best parts of Adum's non-review videos due to his humor and overall banter he and Adum had, while also saying Adum was in the wrong since he should have helped Mark instead of kicking him out. Even with the context of why, those who like Mark often argue Adum was being too quick to kick him out, though this is also because there is isn't much in terms of a timeline to go off of. On the other hand, many of Adum's fans defend Adum's choice since if one watched some of the Let's Play videos that were un-edited, it was clear Mark was being confrontational with Adum about certain topics, and that Adum was being fairly reasonable with Mark. Adum's defenders also pointed out that Adum has every right to make calls about his channel, especially when the issue is something that is because of a single person.
** When it comes to Adum's content, there's two camps: Whether you'll enjoy the Quickies or hate the Quickies. There's no middle ground and in recent years, fans have gotten sick and tired of Adam's borderline CausticCritic attitude to any film that seems to annoy/upset him and at times feel he invokes BiasSteamroller towards art house-like films he likes versus mainstream films he'll riff on. It's made worse when even that is inconsistent.
** Oddly enough, his Adum and Pals series on Series/ThirteenReasonsWhy: while most are relatively happy he's tackling a series that has garnered excessive criticism with the later seasons after the first, some feel Adam already passed the ship as he hadn't even tackled the series head on his channel aside from minor tweets here and there on Twitter, unlike his friend Alex.
** One broken base related to his reaction videos is his absolute insistence that all trailers must be made available in 4K. His reasoning is that there is no excuse why multi-billion dollar companies should not be able to upload their videos at the best possible resolution. While many agree with him, many also feel that he is far too aggressive when declaring his demands and is too harsh on the film when the trailer isn't presented in 4K. Especially when there are many who simply do mind watching trailers in lower resolutions and have grown tired of him constantly bringing up the issue. It doesn't help that when 4K trailers became more standardized, he constantly, albeit jokingly, insists that he is responsible for this by making such demands in the first place.
* FandomRivalry: Adam fans do not get along with Creator/DavidLynch fans, especially when Adam made it clear he hates Lynch's work all because his copy of Film/Eraserhead does not have a menu screen. This got worse when he slammed Lynch's considered classic Film/MulhollandDrive and borderline infuriated fans more when during a Sardonicast episode discussing the aforementioned Eraserhead with WebVideo/Ralphthemoviemaker and WebVideo/IHateEverything, Adam constantly interrupted the two and was borderline caustic about the film. Although in an ironic twist, he genuinely enjoyed David Lynch's adaptation of Dune, showing almost none of his usual distaste for the director and admitting that he likes it even more than Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune.
* FridgeBrilliance: May overlap with FridgeHorror, depending on your sensibilities. The banner for the YMS Website/YouTube channel is a collage of various movies Adam has reviewed, with Cool Cat in the center. However, you can see one of the infamous torture photographs from Film/MeganIsMissing reflected in his eyes. It makes sense once you remember what happens in that movie, and with the RunningGag of Cool Cat being a pedophile, the implication seems to be that Cool Cat is Josh.
* FriendlyFandoms: With WebVideo/IHateEverything as Adam and Alex have collaborated quite a bit and Adam helped Alex during both his copyright dispute with Derek Savage and later helping to raise awareness when Youtube terminated IHE's account. Many YMS fans are also IHE fans, especially because both reviewers have a similar style.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff:
** According to a Reddit post, Adum is very popular in China. His reviews pull in millions of views on Wechat, especially his review of Film/CrazyRichAsians, where he tears the movie to shreds.
** He is just as popular in the US, if maybe more so than in his native home of Canada. This is lampshaded in his review of Riding the Bus With My Sister, where he catches himself using the term "pop" as opposed to "soda", though it is worth mentioning that " Pop" often gets used in Northwestern States.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** Adam getting flak towards fans of the band Car Seat Headrest for being insensitive towards vocalist Will Toledo became this when Toledo became subject to criticisms after he shafted and talked poorly of WesternAnimation/IsleOfDogs, accusing the film of "cultural appropriation", something Adam proceeded to make fun of.
** Despite his bashing of Cool Cat Saves the Kids, he did admire Derek Savage's love and dedication for trying to create something for kids that would help them with issues like bullying and gun safety. Even though Savage himself responded to Adam's video and approved of it, he later started harassing other Video Review Shows because they gave Cool Cat negative reviews (namely WebVideo/IHateEverything and WebVideo/Bobsheaux) and cut ties with Adam after his Cool Cat Learns Fair Use video called him out. Later on, due to Derek Savage launching multiple Kickstarters for new projects that didn't deliver on their promises (even in cases of successful funding) - even unblocking Adam on Twitter to get him to promote one of those films - Adam highly discourages anyone giving money to Savage's unfinished projects and has called him out on his manipulative behavior.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments:
** Adam's admiration for Creator/NeilBreen's filmmaking passion and artistry despite the actual quality of his films is quite heartwarming, especially when Adam highlights Neil's sincerity compared to other SoBadItsGood directors like Creator/TommyWiseau.
** Even with how much he bashes Film/MeganIsMissing, he still compliments Goi on his heart being in the right place, even if he should stick to cinematography.
* HilariousInHindsight: In their "420 Awards" commentary, one of Adam's friends jokes that Creator/DerekSavage is the voice of Cool Cat. Derek would later become the actual voice of Cool Cat after Jason Johnson severed his ties with him.
* IronWoobie: Early on wise, Adam stated on his AMA on Website/Reddit that he struggled growing up with learning about being gay and being a furry, even once saying he would commit suicide if someone were to ever find out. He also admitted to struggling with addictions of pills and cocaine for two years before sobering up, and struggling to tell people about his sexuality and interest in the furry fandom before telling his close friends/bandmates. Despite this, as he's said: "Determinator Overall it kind of sucks, but I can deal with it."
** During the extremely protracted editing process for his review of WesternAnimation/TheLionKing2019, Adam ended up getting tendonitis in BOTH arms due to the excessive amount of clicking and scrolling he did with his computer mouse on his dominant hand and then switching to his non-dominant hand to keep the work going. After being essentially stripped of his ability to do any editing at all with both arms out of commission, he then decided to use his time in recovery to catch up on movies he had been putting off watching. The end result of sitting on the couch watching hours of movies for extended periods of time? Fucking SCIATICA.
* MemeticBadass: His feature-length dismantling of the "WesternAnimation/TheLionKing1994 ripped off Anime/KimbaTheWhiteLion" controversy has made him the world's leading authority on Kimba due to the sheer amount of research he did on the subject matter.
* MemeticMutation:
** It's very rare for Adam to give a film a perfect score, and the few that do are usually of the intelligent and thought-provoking variety. He does admit that action movies, when handled well, are thoroughly entertaining and deserve the money they usually make, such as Film/MadMaxFuryRoad. He gave Fury Road a rating of 7/10 as a film, but a Fun/10 as pure entertainment; at one time, this was what popped up on upvoted posts on his official subreddit.
*** On the flip side of things, his "Dumb/10" rating for Film/Cyberbully2011 was the message for downvoting a post.
** He is the reason Cool Cat is a meme and arguably why people even know about Derek Savage.
** A number of films he's done reviews on have spawned quotes repeated endlessly within his fanbase:
*** "I CAN'T GET THE CAP OFF!"A scene from Film/Cyberbully2011 where Taylor is caught in the middle of a suicide attempt, struggling to open a bottle of prescription pills that she intends to overdose on while shouting this line. The scene quickly became popular to parody after being highlighted in Adam's review, thanks to the implausibility of an able-bodied high school girl struggling with a safety cap, something meant to deter toddlers.
*** "FATHA!"
*** "I didn't pick them because they're really good -- I picked them because they're really famous."An edited version of a quote from a Music/HansZimmer interview from Adam's review of Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan2. The original quote was about Zimmer justifying his inclusion of Johnny Marr and notably Music/PharrellWilliams in the process of making music for the film (which Adam found to be a nonsensical decision) on the grounds that they were really good, not just famous. Adam then shuffled Zimmer's words around to jokingly suggest an ulterior motive.
** His reviews of Manga/KimbaTheWhiteLion and WesternAnimation/TheLionKing2019 spawned several memes:
*** "Hmm, suspicious."The video in question is one of the many featuring wild leaps in logic to claim WesternAnimation/1994 ripped off Kimba the White Lion. The quote in question expresses intense suspicion about the main characters' names rhyming.
*** "Scar himself looks like foreign, weak and with very female moves."A barely-coherent line from a very amateurish 2008 Website/YouTube video claiming The Lion King ripped off Kimba...which, bizarrely, was cited by a law professor in a book that brought up the controversy.
*** yEsCreator/JamesEarlJones as Mufasa responding to Simba in the remake's version of the famous "everything the light touches is our kingdom" scene. However, Jones' delivery of the line is Narm so awkward and almost uncomfortable-sounding that Adam and his fans took it to task with great enthusiasm, with many joking that the line revealed a glimpse of how miserable Jones was while working on the remake.
*** "So, how was it like working with Music/Beyonce?"From a number of interviews shown by Adam in streams while working on the review, the through line of them being interviewers' bizarre fascination with asking remake cast members about fellow cast member Beyoncé due to her near-royal celebrity status, even if their roles had next to no relation (and, in fact, her lines were recorded separately). This later extended to Adam and his fan-run highlight channel, with fans jokingly asking him what it's like to edit a video with Beyoncé in it.
*** "Wow! Dude, Pride Rock!"A line from "College Kids React To New Lion King Trailer", delivered excitedly by REACT member Brandon upon seeing the remake's version of Pride Rock. Considering the combination of Adam already having set his sights on the remake for a YMS review and what many saw as a banal comment about something made by a corporation to stir up consumer nostalgia, the line spread like wildfire, with many spamming it in the video's comments. The face Brandon makes when saying it has since become an emote on Adam's Twitch channel.
*** "Beep repair" and "[=bEEp=]" A weirdly-pronounced line from the remake's version of "Be Prepared", which Adam uses to point out how little care was given to the music in that film.
** "Is that the Asian kid from Series/ThirteenReasonsWhy?" In the first video of the Adum & Pals on 13 Reasons Why, they mistake Zach Dempsey's actor (Ross Butler) for Ki Hong Lee ("the Asian kid from Film/WishUpon"). After that, whenever Zach is on screen, they refer to him by this nickname.
** "Get me outta here! I didn't do anything! Just get me out!" Adum's playthrough of the first Saw video game features this panicked rant from a man being held captive in one of Jigsaw's torture rooms. The hysterically bad delivery of the actor and its repetitiveness made it a certified classic among Adum and fans, to the point where it's regularly quoted on a daily basis.
* MisaimedFandom: Adum's video on the Kimba plagiarism controversy said, among other things, that one should do their own research rather than making assumptions based on incomplete and possibly incorrect information. Some of his fans seem to have missed this theme, review-bombing From Goods to a Good Life -- a book by Madhavi Sunder that briefly tackled the issue -- on Amazon.com solely due to Adum's video. While her claims were definitely worthy of criticism -- not least because she got multiple basic facts wrong and used sources that were questionable at best -- judging her book based on one small section showcased in a Website/YouTube video is completely missing Adum's point.
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound: The 3-note jingleIt's a slightly slowed/pitched-down snippet of "Blackout City" by Music/Anamanaguchi at 0:06 that plays at the start of the "Quickie" movie vlogs, accompanied by a copyright notice to film producers and the like to consider fair use before using [=ContentID=].
* SeasonalRot: While not too serious, some feel 2018's Quickies were too cynical even by Adum's standards, which some feel started with his negative review of Film/AQuietPlace and the addendum to said review. This was also not helped by YMS review of Film/TheVisit, which Twitter followers weren't amused by because he had already reviewed it as a Quickie.
* Squick: Him intentionally vomiting into a bowl and all over his body on the second part of his Franchise/SAW review. If you read the comments, you'll see that a lot of people really weren't fond of that part, either.
