* AlternateAesopInterpretation: Merged almost with HardTruthAesop. If you have a crush or an attraction to someone, just go ahead and ask them out. If you resort to following them and keeping your distance out of nerves, you'll either put them off if they notice or they'll end up with someone who didn't wait and actually asked them out.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Is Alex really a ManipulativeBitch {{Yandere}}? Or is she just a girl who made a mistake out of love and didn't know how to correct it?
* BrokenBase: There are debates to this day over whether the film's structure, particularly the use of AnachronicOrder, is a convoluted mess with characters making implausible decisions - or else a Hitchcockian thriller where the characters are believably overwhelmed by their emotions and make rash decisions.
%%* DracoInLeatherPants: Alex naturally.
* RonTheDeathEater:
** People often like to forget Lisa's good qualities and paint her as a conniving shrew that stole Matthew from Alex, ignoring the fact that Lisa had no idea Matthew was the guy Alex fancied. Considering the strong bond between them, she likely would have rejected Matthew if she had known Alex was interested.
** People also demonize Matthew for dropping everything to try and find Lisa and call him an evil bastard for breaking Rebecca's heart. This is forgetting that it was made clear from the start he was unsure about even proposing to her and breaking it off with her was arguably better than trapping her in a loveless marriage. And also the fact that the two of them are both victims of Alex's meddling in the first place.
* TearJerker: When Rebecca runs into Matthew at the airport and asks "did I do something wrong?" when you know what's coming.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: [[spoiler: We get a scene where Matthew realises exactly who Alex is and calls her on it. The thing is, Matthew and Alex didn't have much in the way of history beyond sleeping together once and him thinking of her as a possible ReplacementGoldfish. Alex caused far more damage to Lisa, who was her best friend for years, and Alex just broke up her relationship and made Lisa think Matthew cheated on her. The only interaction they have on this matter is a phone call where Alex just says "I've been keeping you apart", which is then interrupted by Lisa and Matthew's reunion]].
* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: While critics only found it medicore, praise was given to Rose Byrne for investing Alex with a lot of pathos and genuine emotion. Despite playing the antagonist of the film, who's not a particularly nice person, she turns in a very sympathetic and compelling performance that makes Alex quite the JerkassWoobie.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: It's hard to take Matthew's [[spoiler: reconciliation with Lisa as the triumphant happy ending the film frames it as, since he's suddenly approached by a fiancé he'd been with for a long time and cheated on by sleeping with a stranger. And he dumps her to get back with a girl he hasn't seen in ages, and in fact doesn't know if she wants to get back with him. The callous way the film treats Rebecca as a mere obstacle to be discarded makes Matthew seem like a bit of a dick, even though both are victims of Alex's meddling]].
* TheWoobie:
** Lisa and Rebecca. Lisa was led to believe that the love of her life cheated on her when she was planning to move in with him - when it was actually her supposed best friend keeping them apart out of jealousy. Meanwhile Rebecca is clearly in love with Matthew, oblivious that he doesn't love her and is pining for his first love. Also the three days she thought he was in China, he was actually trying to track down Lisa. Try not to feel sorry for Rebecca when she shows up at the airport all happy to see him.
** Luke too. He genuinely cared for Alex, wanting to take her to dinner and went to her rehearsals and performances. Instead she just strings him along while she's actually in love with his best friend.
