Context YMMV / TERA

Go To

* AnticlimaxBoss: Quite a few. Most of the named quest mobs can be soloed easily and the solo instance quests group the player with [=NPCs=] so monstrously powerful that they would be able to finish the quest on their own [[ArtificialStupidity if their AI was a bit more competent]]. [[spoiler:Thulsa is the biggest example. Despite being the main antagonist of the story his divine form only has standard crab BAM melee attacks. His [[TheDragon right hand woman]] Akasha and later ally Killian at least have unique wipe moves.]]
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: If there's one thing a person who doesn't play the game knows, it's ''probably'' [[OvershadowedByControversy about the Elins]]. Otherwise, people are generally more aware of it as a ridiculously sexy-looking game where the majority of the female characters wear ''really'' {{Stripperific}} outfits.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: The Elin race created a divide between the those who liked the anime aesthetics and {{fanservice}} against those who don't.
* BrokenBase: Despite the extreme popularity of the Elin, the race has sparked ''a lot'' of internal conflicts within the playerbase. On one side, you have the people who absolutely detests the Elin race because they get a lot of raps than the other races (more costumes, more classes being added to said race, etc.) while the other side loves the Elin due to their cute Anime-inspired designs and catering to certain tropes. Plus, they [[ItAmusedMe loved the idea of a little girl with a weapon 5 times her size taking down a big-ass monster]].
* CompleteMonster: [[EvilOverlord Dakuryon]] is the {{sadist}}ic Archdevan Imperator in the continent of Northern Arun. He, along with other Archdevan mages, uses brutal BloodMagic experiments to create barely sapient grotesque abominations known as demokrons from creatures that were unfortunate enough to fall into the hands of the Archdevans. During the Fate of Arun arc, Dakuryon establishes himself to the player by abducting High Eldar Verikam in [[TheShangriLa Highwatch]]. Later in the arc, Dakuryon ambushes Zolyn, taking special interest in her as she is able to partially resist his restraining magic. Dakuryon taunts her about how he experimented on and killed her sister Syona, before abducting Zolyn. After the player enters Dakuryon's sanctum in Arx Umbra, Zolyn is revealed to be transformed into a demokron by Dakuryon's magic, warping her mind and body and forcing her to kill her crewmate Paesyn. The player is then forced to fight Zolyn, who begins begging the player to put her out of her misery.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: The Elin race as a whole. They were originally supposed to be just a filler race but according to the director, they have overshadowed the other races in terms of popularity that they became canon to the lore. As further proof, the Japanese localization team requested for a "Swimsuit" costume for the Elin race to the director, the director just went on to do their request without expecting anything good happening. The result? The revenue gained for the Elin swimsuit costumes alone exceeded the total number of revenue gained from the swimsuit costumes from ''all the other races combined''. This has resulted in the "Elin saved Terra" MemeticMutation and why the game became so profitable even when going Free-to-Play. With the release of the Maid costumes later on (which is one of the big hits in Japan), it only further cemented the status of the Elins as ''the'' most loved race in the entire game. No contest.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: Asian players absolutely ''love'' the Elin especially by Anime fans since the race caters a lot to the tropes commonly seen in the medium, particularly to people who adore young female characters.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: The ''Last Quest'' is this mixed with TearJerker. It basically involves The Player Character saying goodbye to many notable Npcs before they part ways to parts unknown. In turn many of them express gratitude towards The PC's efforts and achievements through the game with some even expressing sadness over seeing them leave and others wishing the Player best for their future. Considering the RealitySubtext that this quest was released during the final month of the game's lifespan, It was a pretty touching send off on the part of the developers.
* MemeticMutation:
** "Elin saved Terra!"
** "You play as Elin? Then you're a pedophile!"
** “Josh killed Tera” [[labelnote:Explanation]] MMO [=YouTuber=] Josh Strife Hayes covered the game on his series “Worst MMO Ever?” and although He praised some aspects such as the combat system, the review for the most part was unfavorable to the game. Several months after the video was released, it was announced that the servers for ''TERA'' would be shutting down rendering the game unplayable. This caused many in the MMO community to jokingly say Josh and his video killed ''TERA'' due to the coincidental timing, with even Josh himself getting in on it.[[/labelnote]]
* NightmareFuel:
** A lot of monsters fall to this. Special mentions goes to the monsters in Poporia region such as the bloodfiends and the Vampirs.
** [[EldritchAbomination The Argons]]. Jesus Christ, just THE ARGONS! They're like aliens from another planet who is hellbent on conquering the entire world similar to the Burning Legion in the VideoGame/WarCraft series and is only held back because of the constant interference of the Valkyon Federation. The prologue chapter alone establishes them as this as they mercilessly destroyed a village and kidnapped children in order to forcefully put them to sleep so that they can "See what they see". And it gets worse. They can infect and turn ANYTHING into their own kind - humans, animals, plants, the water that you drink, and even the ground you walk on!
* NoYay: People who hate the Elin race definitely sees them as this as even though they're ReallySevenHundredYearsOld, they still physically look very much like young girls with HartmanHips even though in reality, little girls don't have hips and proportions like those.
* OvershadowedByControversy: Most people know of ''TERA'' because of the young-looking Elins dressing in an incredibly skimpy manner, rather than the story, gameplay, or any other aspect of the game. The censorship of a number of Elin outfits, namely switching panties for shorts, has not been very-well received by the players as well, resulting in a double case.
* PlayerPunch: During the Fate of Arun storyline, the player meets an Elin named Zolyn and a Popori named Paesyn. There is a subplot involving Paesyn wanting to be friends with Zolyn, but she keeps brushing him off because she is more interested in looking for her sister Syona who had gone missing on a previous expedition years ago. He eventually manages to get her to open up to him a little, but [[spoiler:Zolyn ends up ambushed by Dakuryon and captured by him while Paesyn and the player are forced to watch. The two have to move on and hope she's still alive somewhere, but after entering the Archdeva sanctum, the player finds Dakuryon again, who sends a corrupted Zolyn towards the two and forced into killing Paesyn by the magic warping her mind and the player has to give Zolyn a MercyKill.]]
* SpiritualLicensee: This game is considered the closest thing to a ''Literature/SwordArtOnline'' MMORPG, or the first one when that anime was still relatively new in terms of popularity and hype in the mainstream.
* TearJerker [[spoiler: Elleon's HeroicSacrifice at the end of the Exodor storyline]] is quite heartbreaking to see.
