* AndYouThoughtItWouldFail: A good amount of people weren't amused at the Labo's announcement, calling it a cash grab, giving it the infamous "$70 Cardboard" label as mentioned below, and denoting it as dead-on-arrival. What many people didn't expect were the amount of players would go on to have a ''blast'' with the game at launch, experimenting with all the things they could make with the game's unique programming code and the cardboard DIY kits. The integration of Labo with other games such as ''VideoGame/MarioKart8'' and the continuation of the series with additional kits confirm that Labo did exactly as well as Nintendo hoped.
* FandomEnragingMisconception: Call the Labo "$70 Cardboard" at your peril. There's so many people sick of people straw-manning the concept to where saying that will get you burned at the stake. The software is $60 USD (like other major Switch titles), plus $10 USD cardboard, which makes it a 70 US dollar bundle.
* FriendlyFandoms: ''Film/PacificRim'' fans are ecstatic over the Robot Kit.
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: Creator/JohnCarpenter [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIRG6reVYLs attempts to play the theme to]] ''Franchise/{{Halloween}}'' on a Labo piano...the key word being "attempts".
-->'''John Carpenter''': Frankly.....this thing sucks.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhRZXdcxhyg This video]] promoting the original concept for ''Project Giant Robot'', which shows Reggie fighting a man dressed up in a cheap cardboard robot costume. It looks eerily prophetic since the game's retooling into the "Robot" kit.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNqKBQT-9EI This]] mockumentary about the Platform/WiiU claims that one of Nintendo's rejected ideas for the Wii's successor consisted of "an empty [cardboard] box full of your imagination."
** The fact that the Toy-con vehicle kit is supported in ''VideoGame/MarioKart8''-- they're literally [[{{Pun}} reinventing]] the [[VideoGame/MarioKart Wii Wheel]].
* MemeticMutation:
** Not only the entire concept of playing with cardboard, but the man shaped toy-con, [[FanNickname nicknamed]] Labo Man, in particular is heading in this direction, to the point where many people legitimately want him to be a playable character in the next ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros''.
** [[WesternAnimation/{{Rugrats}} "STOP HAVING FUN! IT'S JUST A STUPID BOOOOOX!"]] and almost any line from the ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'' episode "Idiot Box"[[labelnote:Explanation]]Plenty of "hardcore" players just can't wrap their heads around the idea of playing with boxes![[/labelnote]].
** Taping knives to the RC labo cars. [[labelnote:Explanation]]Given the idea behind labo is making your own homebrew accessories for the Switch, a common joke is people posting their own take on the RC car labo, which commonly involves taping a knife to it. Jokes about being ready for ''Series/BattleBots'' or "[[VideoGame/MetalGear a weapon to surpass Metal Gear]]" are common as well.[[/labelnote]]
** That this game came out on [[FourTwentyBlazeIt 4/20]] for [[Lol69 $69]] did not go unnoticed by fans.
** [[Manga/JojosBizarreAdventureDiamondIsUnbreakable Switch Heart Attack]] [[https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1365104-nintendo-labo has no]] [[https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1339355-jojos-bizarre-adventure weaknesses]] [[labelnote:Explanation]]The Toy-Con RC Car has an autonomous driving function, complete with a heat-seeking function that drives it to seek out any heat source. Part 4 fans immediately compared the Labo to the stand Killer Queen's Sheer Heart Attack transformation.[[/labelnote]]
** The VR update has resulted in a series of candid and ribald jokes about using the VR functionality to enjoy fanservice, in particular [[https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1478409-nintendo-labo a certain]] [[https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1479307-nintendo-labo scene from]] ''VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles2''.
*** These jokes paired with the [[https://www.mariowiki.com/images/2/2c/Nintendo_Labo_VR_Kit_x_Super_Mario_Odyssey.png artwork of Mario and Cappy]] happily enjoying the [=VR=] Kit, which associates with the "Aw, that's hot!" meme from WebVideo/YouTubeRewind 2018.
* NightmareFuel:
** In the House minigame, putting the creature to sleep when the lights are off will cause the room to suddenly become a living nightmare. Dark music fills the room, the old-fashioned bust hung on the wall wakes up with [[RedEyesTakeWarning beat-red eyes]] staring into your soul with a SlasherSmile, a spider emerges from the ceiling, two shadowy figures (a blob and a snake) sprout from the desk and a poster on the wall respectively, and to top it off, a king from the playing card rugs on the floor emerges and scares the poor creature awake with a shock.
** In the VR Kit, one of the example games is Big Old Book. It takes place in a dark room with nothing but a locked book, a key that opens it, and a ball that opens the book once it is unlocked. Once unlocked, the only words in it are [[SchmuckBait "look behind you"]]. Turn around, and a bear with a crown zooms in, making a "yay" sound effect and vibrating the Joy-Cons. Turn back around for a bonus!
* OlderThanTheyThink:
** Nintendo had some history with DIY papercraft toys in their pre-NES days, as seen by the [[http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/05/nintendo-picture-cutter-and-new-picture.html Picture Cutter]] and the [[http://blog.beforemario.com/2012/05/nintendo-paper-model-series.html Paper Model]] series.
** Even going into the SNES era there was still some papercraft culture going strong. There was once a paper model kit for the ''Star Fox'' Arwing fighter, and after that you see some of this reflected in the design choices for the ''Paper Mario'' series.
