* BelligerentSexualTension: Everyone is always asking why Urania gets the most pies in the face...
* JustHereForGodzilla: Some people only read the magazine for the Muses and the Kokopelli comics. There was widespread fan outcry when the Muses were removed in the 2015 revamp.
* OvershadowedByControversy: Happened pretty early on in the magazine's life. The March 1997 issue had a photo of a calf on the cover with the caption "Please don't eat me!" and a very pro-vegetarian article called "Dead Meat" stating, "The hamburger on your plate is some dead cow's muscle." This gave the magazine a lot of [[https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1997/03/04/lawmakers-have-a-cow-over-smithsonian-linked-kids-article/2c473af9-b9a2-4246-aca5-4900de71bcb9/ bad press]] (and got it onto ''Texas Monthly'''s [[https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/revoltin/ "Bum Steer" list]] at the end of the year) after it raised the ire of its readers, as well as cattlemen and lawmakers who didn't like that the taxpayer-funded Smithsonian's name was attached to it. None of this was helped by the fact that the magazine was within the first three months of its publication. In response, the magazine had its editor KickedUpstairs, changed its editorial vetting processes, and published an apology and three pages' worth of angry letters in the subsequent issue.
* PeripheryDemographic: You don't have to be aged 10-13 to enjoy this magazine. It's very common to find reader content in the "Submissions" section from the ''parents'' of kids who get the magazine.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Hoooooooo boy. In September 2015, ''Muse'' was merged with its sister magazine ''Odyssey'' and the magazine was revamped with a completely new layout, removing the original Muse-centric features in the process (Bo's Page, Muse Mail, the Hot Pink Bunnies, and the Kokopelli and Company comics), which nobody was happy about. But the most controversial change: the original Muses, the most iconic characters of the magazine, were '''removed entirely''' and replaced with [[ReplacementScrappy a new cast of characters]], most of them from ''Odyssey''. On top of that, the magazine stopped focusing on a variety of topics and became more oriented toward articles about STEM [[note]]Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics[[/note]], making it more like a hard science magazine. Long-time subscribers were [[http://cricketmedia.com/blog/introducing-new-muse less than pleased]], to put it lightly. As one reader said: "Honestly, how did you THINK it would go over with the readers? You thought everyone would be hunky dory with you abruptly ending such incredibly beloved characters?"
* ViewerGenderConfusion: ''Many:''
** Kokopelli not only appears to be wearing a dress, but he ''also'' has a chest and hips. He's male, though.
** Mimi could also be wearing a dress, but her hair doesn't look particularly feminine.
** Aside from the udders (which most cartoon bovines [[AnimalGenderBender end up with anyway]]), there's [[TertiarySexualCharacteristics no obvious evidence]] that Bo is female.
